I have carried a 1911, of one sort or another, and of one length or another ever since I got my first "Permit" to carry many years ago. Like you, I carried a 1911 (Colt Series 80 Government Model) when I was a LEO. That was until the department felt that I should move to a "safer" DA/SA pistol. I chose the Sig Sauer P220, which was as close as I could get to a 1911. I totally agree with you on the 5-inch "Government" model. While 8 or 9 rounds seems minuscule to today's HC plastic pistols, the round capacity forces one to focus on and hit the target rather than spraying and praying.

My experience being.....after 40 years of carrying the 5" + 2 spare magazines in a Milt Sparks Summer Special 2 worked best for me; Wilson 47C magazines never failed. That being said the steel lined belt and weight of the overall kit finally destroyed my sciatic nerve. Fortunately the P365 & P365xl made a timely appearance; Milt Sparks makes the Summer Special 2 for them as well .... miss old slab sides but father time eventually catches up with everyone. Thank you for sharing your experience and the recommendations.

Enjoyed your video. I carry one of two Kimber Govt size in .45 everyday. For me, a leather IWB holster strongside works best. The Kore Essentials gun belt provides the support I need for an all steel 1911 weight gun. The slim size of a 1911 conceals well in any season. I recently bought a new Springfield Armory Mil-Spec in stainless steel as I really wanted a series 70 that I can use as a base gun to modify only slightly as a new carry gun. Living in a 10 round max state, having 8 rounds and one in the chamber with a spare mag on my weakside belt works for me. Thank you for your excellent content.

Thank… appreciate your take and overall perspective. As the proud owner of a stainless steel Springfield Armory 1911 Loaded .45ACP for nearly 4 years that I conceal carry every so often I found this video relatable. In particular that as a new 1911 that I went with a middle tier Springfield Armory with a 5” barrel in .45ACP and that the stainless steel finish will hold well. Lastly apart from mentioning the concept of the different holster offerings it would have been good that you would have mentioned that in conceal carrying a 1911 that can easily weigh 40oz one must get a real decent gun belt.

I am amazed in its performance! I changed out the full length guide rod because field maintenance is easier. I changed the recoil spring for a 17lb Wilson Combat. A cheap upgrade. I am so pleased with it and after another 500 rnds I see it as a ccw. Great channel.

Can’t go wrong with Rock island. They are built by armscorp in the Philippines and the 1911 is like their national gun. They build the guns for the Philippine Olympic team. Their guns work and are durable and dependable or they don’t leave the factory. Like Miroku in Japan they take great pride in their work and producing quality guns. Cutting corners and selling junk guns would damage their national pride and reputation so they just won’t do it.

Picked up a Springfield TRP a few years ago. Couldn't afford a Wilson Combat but the TRP isn't what I'd call cheap either. Been using a leather pancake from Urban Carry for a few years now. I do find it reasonably comfortable with little to no printing but at my age let's face it... It is a heavy piece. My backs pretty messed up from years of roofing. Thinking about scaling down but I love the 1911 platform. Especially in a full size model. It's hard to beat a fine tuned 1911. Much appreciated for the video.

I also have the TRP model along with a Series '70 Colt GCNM and the SA RO Compact. I carry the RO Compact when I opt for the 1911 platform mainly because I'm almost 62 and it's just easier to carry. Fits and conceals well in a Jackass rig, and IWB Crossbreed, or an OWB Galco. The TRP occupies space on the nightstand most of the time. The Gold Cup is strictly a bullseye target pistol. If I'm not carrying the RO Compact then I opt for the SA XDS in .45 ACP. Easier to clean, keep clean, and is surprisingly easy to control. The trigger can't compete with a 1911 but it's still better than the Glocks I've shot.

I have a couple 1911 and picked the one that never fails to function. My carry 1911 is mid-range brand name and happens to always function. I learned that by shooting the heck out of them. I learned about crap in the pocket and new shirts/coats being in the way of a smooth draw. Not for everyone but I carry hammer down instead of using the safety. In a panic which happens when you are threatened I expect to instinctively thumb a hammer back quicker than fiddle with the safety lever. All of my magazines work from stock '70s era Colt to new Wilson Combat 47s. Then again I am a big fan of standard hardball... the ammo the gun was designed to function with. 45 is a huge bullet and does not need to expand when hitting something.

  • @108Performance

    @108Performance

    Жыл бұрын

I would offer that you actually *try* to thumb the hammer back under pressure and at speed - not at your own pace, but on an electronic shot timer. In addition to removing the dangerous practice of lowering the hammer on a loaded chamber, the thumb safety is demonstrably faster and a more repeatable mechanical motion than breaking your grip to thumb a hammer. Ball ammo in any handgun caliber is going to be inferior in terminal ballistics to any JHP round from the last several decades. I appreciate your viewing the channel and hope that you can get yourself out to some training classes and matches to continue to build your skill set and knowledge base.

Sadly, it appears that they only offer them for 5" and 4.3" 1911 models. Are you or any of your readers aware of something similar for the smaller sized pistols that they would recommend? I have NOT had good luck trying to find a decent holster on Amazon for any of my pistols!

Over the many yrs, there were always better defensive guns to aquire. Once my " preference" goals were attained, I entertained and scratched the vintage itch with the Tisas govt 1911. For $400 let me just say I absolutely love it! I have just over 800 rds thru it without issue, uncleaned or lubed, from factory. To shoot it hallway distance, I will just say I am playing with concealed carry of old slab sides again. I dont think one has to spend big money on a "45" anymore, to get and enjoy a good one. Again, just my 2 cents, good vid brother.

My next 1911 will be a Tisas, or a 5.7 oistol if ammo price comes down. The full size 1911 conforms to the body better than the shorter models, from what I've read.

I carry S&W PC1911 bobtail 45, or my DW ECP 45, or sometimes SA EMP Bobtail 9mm, They all have bobtail aluminum frame and are commander size. They all work well. More recoil then government size, thats the trade off. Now Cabot makes the "full cycle" design Gentleman's Carry commander and Wilson Combat has the "Wave Rail" design on the Experior commander that are supposed to make them even more reliable, which are expensive but not sure if aluminum frame.

Just got an Alchemy Classic Carry in 9mm. It runs like a sewing machine. How much grip safety movement do you recommend for a carry gun before the trigger is disengaged? On the Alchemy you have to press it about 2/3rd of the way. I'm thinking of sensitizing it closer to halfway.

How would body size/stature fit into carrying a 5" 1911? Or would you say it just follows the adage of good belt+holster? Do you find the size and weight of the 1911 drastically effects the ease and speed of draw from concealment as compared to a subcompact/compact polymer striker (let's say glock 19)? (I guess it might be self-evident due to the physical differences, but want to know if there is a large difference from someone with a vast amount of training with both platforms). Great video by the way, am subscribed to your patreon and love when the new content comes out (gear, gunsmithing/armorer work, AND training :D)

  • @108Performance

Size/stature are always a factor, and the 5" Govt is at the outer limits of what I could AIWB. It's slower on the draw for me from AIWB due to barrel length vs G19. Also the grip safety and hammer sticking out the back affect grip acquisition vs the relatively smooth back end of a Glock.

I saw a Tisas 1911 A1 service government for 349.00 and I bought it. That pistol is absolutely 💯 reliable with any 45 rounds even hollow point. I have shot around a thousand rounds with no issues.

When 10mm was created, it was tested and found that the recoil it provided was less favorable due to target reacquisition taking longer. That's the general reason most people stick between .45 and 9mm. 9mm being slightly smaller but has a further distance of travel before bullet drop. .45 is bigger but had less accuracy at range. Granted the caliber has more merit based on which model firearm its shot from, 1911 providing better recoil control due to its weight drawing down. Some find the 10mm to do fairly well with 1911s, but its a niche crowd that usually has a good grip/arm strength and steady hands.
