If it had to be any player, I'm glad it was Ichiro. He's a class act, who did it all the right way. I love that he went to Sisler's daughter and was so respectful to her.

I got so many chills, watching my favorite player break an 80 year old record! Just amazing, no words can fully describe.

So it's been over a decade since Ichiro set this record and no one has really come close to it, in fact Ichiro himself came closet with 238 in 2007 - which is some way off 262. Makes me wonder how long this record will stand for...probably many, many years.

Either someone with a high contact rate + speed or a high contact rate + high line drive rate will break it. Or, nobody will break it and it'll stand forever.

Nobody will break the record because teams are employing the shift regularly from here on out, which takes away 20-30 hits from a batter every season. ESPN's E60 did a segment on the defensive shift and the prevalence thereof.

Jose Altuve has the best chance but I doubt he'll break it. I doubt anyone will even hit 242

@@lj3507 well given the most recent CBA negotiations, the shift may become outright banned in the next couple years (I don't agree with out right banning it, just some of the most ridiculous ones). Either way, I don't see the record being broken either way.

It would have been great if Ichiro played his whole career in the states. Could've had 4,000 hits easy.

Probably about 4,400 hits. The season is shorter in Japan than it is in the US, so it cost him hits in the long run.

Martin Gardner Yes, Japan season is only 130games at that time Nonetheless he have a record with 210hits.If his whole career was in the US he would make about 4600〜700hits i think

目の付け所が素晴らしい！

婦人へ挨拶に行ったあと思いにふけるような表情は何とも言えない。 まさに「ラスト・サムライ」とは彼のこと

跳びはねたり、ガッツポーズしたりする訳ではない。かと言って、無表情で愛想がない訳でもない。 ファン、チームメイトやスタッフ、そして80年間以上も破られなかった記録を持っていた男の家族らと静かに喜びを分かち合う。 球場全体が大記録への労いと感謝と興奮に包み込まれる…… いや〜、何度観ても素晴らしい。

1st 262hits, 2004 2nd 257, 1920 3rd(2), 254, 1929 5th, 253, 1925 6th(2), 250, 1922 8th, 248, 1911 9th, 246, 1922 Almost all of records are made before 2nd Word War. My Oh My.

いやあ、すごすぎる。 ストライク、ボールにかかわらず、どんなボールでもヒットにしていた頃。 今より少し若い。体の動きも軽そう。

ヤベージョージ・シスラーの娘さんとイチローが写った瞬間にマジで涙出てきた。８４年前この記録ができてから長かった。あまりにも長すぎた。永遠に破られないであろうと言われてきたシーズン最多安打記録を８４年越しに超えた。きっとジョージ・シスラーも天国で喜んでいることであろう。そしてジョージ・シスラーの娘さんも祝福している。確かに私たちはこの目で歴史が変わる瞬間を目撃したのには間違いはないだろう。そしてその歴史が変わる瞬間に生きていて本当に良かったと心から感じている。

I think Ichiro's season hitting record will last even longer than Sislers. Between 1920-1930, there were 5 250+, but since then only one(Ichiro at 262), even though games added 8 more in 1964. I don't know what was different in 1920-1930 but Sisler wasn't far ahead of the rest. On the other hand, since 1930, closest came to 250 were 240 by 2 players(Boggs in 1985, Earstad in 2000) besides Ichiro(246, 262). And as you know, before anybody gets to 262, he has to get to 250 first. Just imagine, hundreds years from now, every time somebody gets close to 262, Ichiro's name will come up. Or that, baseball no longer exists.

***** says: "and in the 20's pitchers were easy to hit." == That doesn't explain why hitting count surged in 1920-1930. Before that period, there were fewer 250+. Sure, pitching technique developed since then, but before?

***** Harry Engel Pitchers are not tougher to hitm nor were pitchers in the 20 easier to hit. The approach hitters take today is much different. Guys like Ichiro are rare. Today everybody goes for the big bats. Strikeout are a plenty. If you hit 30 home runs and strike out 250 times you are still an all-star. Altuve could break it. He takes a get on base approach. He doesn't swing for the fences.

+allgoo19 Boogs also walked 96 times in 1985 plus was hit by pitch 4 times..Reached base 340 times...Also notice Ichiro only scored 101 runs after reaching base 315 times and stealing 36 bases.
