It's easy to say that when watching it on a 25 minute video, but people get to a totally different headspace once they've been stuck in one place being alone for almost the entire time aside from a person for a few minutes or an hour at a time for over a month, not to mention in pitch black for a decent amount of it. When you're actually in a situation alone like that, especially when you have a family that you actually love it becomes a very big weight on you, especially 45 days in. On top of all that they never mentioned that he had any access to internet or electronics which makes this challenge a lot harder to a lot of people.

Because he explicitly made calculations based on what he really wanted the money to go to (kids school etc etc) and 500k was the number he said he needed. 50k for that purpose is a particular dropoff. This was in the beginning of the video. No shit people wanted him to be able to stick it out. It's not an arbitrary number, they just watched the video.
