S5ii series is exactly what panasonic needed to release. They are now on-par with most competitor features, ahead in a few, and behind in a few. I'm looking forward to new cameras they develop after these.

​@@snipermallikisame. If there's only two small things I could change on the camera - I'd want better battery life and I'd want a little more base resolution like 28mp. It's also a little sad that the depreciation on Lumix is so steep compared to other brands. On mpb the s5ii is selling only $200 more than an a7c despite being a much better camera and three years newer with the a7c releasing at $200 cheaper. I dont have plans to part with my s5ii unless something like an s5r comes out someday but would still be nice to hold onto a bit more of that valuation.

Same. I switched to Sony because they fell behind with autofocus.

Bought S5II few weeks ago. So I’m happy with it. It’s my first FF mirrorless and price deals were main reason to buy it. I use it regularly with my Xt4. Love Fuji for way it handles with f2 lenses. For low light S5II obviously wins.

Another great video, thanks! I keep thinking that when I replace my G9 and GX9, I’ll probably get the S5 II. Your videos continue to help me move in that direction.

Great video. You are right that this camera puts Panasonic back into the game. Let’s hope the cameras has sold well. Having the right spec at the right time is important. The problem for Panasonic is that they can gain marketshare by getting switchers into their system.

1.5 hour ceremony, dual card recording DCI4K 24P in 32 degree celsius and direct sunlight. No problems reported!

I was surprised this didn't pop up in my search when I was looking at S5iiX videos. Love how you break down cameras in your videos. I'm happy that Panasonic finally got it together with the autofocus. I kept my GH5 even though I got an a7s iii because it was such a beast. I would love to see Phase detect auto focus in the GH series. I'm not too keen on the crop in 4k60 and no 4k 120p in 2023 but we'll see what they do next.

Thank you! The G9 II with PDAF currently surpasses the GH series in almost every way, so that is also an option. GH7 with PDAF will probably be available pretty soon.

Nice. thank you I would love to see a S5 ii R together with the G9ii a perfect RunNGun hybrid setup for fast delivery for the more "serious stuff" i'm eagerly awaiting the FF EVAii and the next gen of box cameras (wich i would prefer over a S1Hii)

Great long term review. Only major hole in the L mount seems to be fast telephoto lenses and f1.2 primes. Would love to see a 85mm f1.2 and the standard 400mm and 600mm primes and maybe even a 100-300 f2.8. About photo video switch, they do have a software photo video switch called "creative video combined set". Weird approach, not a real substitute for a physical switch, but it is there.

Thank you! Yes, I would like a proper switch that removes video mode from PSAM dial and makes the PSAM dial useable for both stills and video.

Both these camera's are on my list and also I am looking forward to seeing what Panasonic does with the Panasonic S1H Mark 2, Panasonic S1 Mark 2 and Panasonic SR Mark 2

If I switch to full frame these may be the way to go

I used both the S5II and A74. I sold the sony. Sony pros: High resolution photo and some video sensor zoom features extending the range of the lens in situations where swapping lenses is not an option. Photo/video switch, autofocus (my usecases) more reliable, button lay-out, lens options, start-up time. Panasonic pros: IBIS, Open Gate and recording formats, video features, firmware updates, better grip, viewfinder, no overheating.

Panasonic has a few new cameras that have been registered and not announced yet. I’m pretty confident a high res cam will be released this year.

Great video, as always my friend. I'm using the S5II since March, I think. As a long time Lumix user who switched to Canon because of the AF, I am VERY happy to switch back. This camera fits my content a LOT. One question: have you ever tried the Sigma 150-600 sports on this cameras? I'm thinking about getting one for wildlife vídeo and stills. Do you have any opinions about AF and IBIS? Right now I'm using the a6700 + Sigma 100-400 for this, but I'm very inclined to build a full Lumix setup. Cheers mate✌🏻🙂

The lens is quite nice. Very sharp. Lots of vignetting but that’s very easy to fix. AFAIK the S5ii has not (yet?) received the same subject detection AF upgrades the G9ii has. The G9ii AF for birds is pretty good. Not quite Sony/Canon yet but very promising already.

Is S5ii good for wild life / sports photography? or Canon R7 is better for that?

Apple prores makes the video better colour or better sharpness ?

Excellent review. I was going to buy a Sony A7c ll as a smaller full frame compliment to my Lumix G9 but other than the size the S5 ll seems to be as good or better?

I wasn't able to review the A7C II yet, but it is basically a miniaturized A7 IV, so it will have both advantages and disadvantages. If you are already a Panasonic user, the S5 II probably makes more sense.

Is there overheating with the 5.9k external recording? Still getting this camera. just wanting to plan a bit

s5iix best for photography ?

Hello, I am considering purchasing the S5 II, but after seeing several testers of this device, I have some doubts. Can you tell me in the 30 fps burst mode, when you press the shutter button there is always this moment of slowdown when the burst starts? Still in burst mode, to overcome this problem is there a pre-trigger mode (like on the G9 II)

I'm still using the original s5, and I feel like it just gets better every day. :-) But recently I ran into a problem because it only shoots 23.976 fps, and I needed a DCP for a film I just shot, and that's a problem. So I'm considering upgrading just to get straight 24 fps. I'm actually thinking of upgrading to the s1h, because I would love to have an olpf. I've only seen moire show up once in the 2 years that I've been using this camera, but I would love to have that filter. I even thought of getting a gh5s, because it shoots 24 and has an olpf, but I have anamorphic lenses for my full frame camera, I have a bunch of vintage lenses, I would have to get new adapters, which is not that big of a deal, but I just don't feel like moving to micro 4/3 after using full frame for so long. As much as I considered upgrading to the S5ii, or the iix, I think the s1h will solve my problems. (I don't really use autofocus at all) Then again, I could just keep my S5 and make a "workaround" dcp, which I'm told can be done. I just don't like the idea of a workaround for a theatrical showing of a film. Trying to make the audio work doesn't sound like a great idea to me. :-) (obviously I'm talking about future projects for upgrading my camera, I'm not going to reshoot this film.) Just put a video on my page for the S5ii, it's under the CAMERA BASED playlist. Photos there of it, and I shot a video w/ the S5ii in that playlist too. Former GH4 owner, former GH5 owner, former GH6 owner, and the S5ii is the best Panasonic camera I ever had.

did you use an external monitor? These cameras do not have a very comfortable HDMI output delay. Richard Wong even made a separate video about it. It would be interesting to know if this has changed with the firmware. or you haven't used it and can't advise?

Yes, I use external monitor with S5 II, but not in situations with a lot of movement. So far I haven't noticed any lag in my personal use, but I haven't done any in-depth tests.

Some people have said the image quality on the original S5 is slightly better than the II and X. Is that correct? Not sure if for stills and for video. Might have something to do with the new AF system.

What are the single AF issues with Sigma lenses? Have you tested the IBIS plus OÍS with Sigma lenses in video? I heard it does not work.

Take a look at my 24-70 DG DN review with S5 II, it is shown there. Unfortunately, I have never Sigma lens with OIS on the S5 II.

Great video, I have a comment and a question. My comment its about ergonomics. For me the front dial in Nikon, Sony and Fuji it's an ergonomics problem. My index finger rubs with my mid finger and I need to reposition my grip everytime. So it prevents to handle the camera in a firmly and relaxed way. Canon and Panasonic solved this, Canon put the index finger dial behind the shutter and Panasonic around the shutter (S5 line) or on a clearly different step over the rest of the grip (S1 line). Now my question. What happens if you use an APSC Sigma lens on the S5II? Can you use it in full frame mode? That way you could crop the way you want.

For video, it defaults to APSC. In photography, it doesn't crop.

Waw, a Siriu Cinelens attached to the S5IIx is showing the target audience of this camera, which is video audience.

Sometimes I wish I was a dentist as well...

I would love this camera but the most important thing for me is whether it can be used as a Webcam for Zoom and Teams on Mac, Windows (and sometimes Linux ) as this is what I would use it for most. I have had terrible trouble getting my S5 to work so had to borrow a Sony ZV-10 which you just plug in and it works straight away. Good review anyway, covered just about everything else.

I'm still in a dilemma about whether to go for the FX30 or S5II. Currently, I'm using the Panasonic G85, and it's a beast when I shoot wedding videos, especially solo. Panasonic stabilization is a must for me; however, I kind of prefer Sony's color looks and the variety of their third-party lenses. Unfortunately, I can't go with Sony's amateur stabilization. I don't want the hassle of using Catalyst Browse software for each set of 100 clips. I've never used a Vlog PP on Panasonic because the G85 lacks log profiles. I'm not sure if it is similar to Sony's S log, allowing me to use a variety of LUTs.

I had the A7SIII and A7IV (both better than the FX30) and now I'm switching to the S5IIX. The image quality and options are much better with the Panasonic if you as a filmmaker are happy with 25p at FF.

I shoot with the S5II but edit additional footage from an EVA1 and an FX3. The two Panasonic cameras put out incredibly accurate, pleasing colors. The FX3 seems to always have oversaturated greens and yellows , while other colors are very muted, even with the S-log3 LUT. (The same person who shot the FX3 footage also shot some DJI drone footage in LOG for us at the same time, and it looks fine.) I ended up using the V-log LUT on the FX3 footage and found it way more pleasing. Some of that is subjective, but I tend to like a natural, real-life look, so I feel confident saying the S5II will give you better color reproduction.

Would you say the combined ibis and the 24-105F4 lens stabilization is on the same or around the same level as a gimbal? Im thinking of picking up that lens just for the dual stabilization alone, since I hear its amazing (I hate gimbals for wedding shoots)

I use the S5II with the 24-105 as my every day setup, and while the stabilization is great for handheld filming in a pinch, if you're planning to do anything commercial with the footage, I'd still recommend a gimbal. Handheld works well when your hands are stationary, especially resting on a ledge or something, but the stabilization can only do so much. It gets rid of muscle jitters and jerks, but it can't fully eliminate the awkward movements we all make when we're focused on keeping a subject in frame. Having it on a gimbal makes it buttery smooth. Just be sure to zoom the 24-105 to around 80mm before balancing the gimbal, because it's very front-heavy on when fully extended.

Hello. Has Lumix S5 II advanced focus stacking (so called "post focus") or not? Is difficult to find trustworthy information on the internet. Some sources say one way, others another.

Not in-camera, no. That function was removed since it was a part of the '6K Photo' features which was not carried over to the S5ii.

I have had the s5ii for 6 months and it has been the most consistent camera I have ever used. I’ve never had so many shots for both photo and video be “winners” versus the amount of shots I take. With Sony cameras (unless you nail exposure perfectly) you can expect to throw out maybe half of your shots at least. I feel like the image quality you get from these cameras is above Sony cameras but below maybe a red Komodo or arri Alexa. What a wild statement to be saying….

You must be doing something very, very wrong with Sony cameras if you have to throw away half of your shots. The image quality itself is very similar to Sony equivalents.

Does it still revert to DFD when in 1080p at higher fps (60 and above)?

Yes it does in full-frame but if you switch it to APS-C 1080p 50/60fps then it has PDAF again. It only goes back into contrast-based AF on FF 1080 50/60 but it also has PDAF on 1080 24/25/30fps FF mode.

@@Misigun99 These Sony conspiracies are even more insane :) There is probably some technical limitation that has to do with incompatibility between the way they use to output 1080p, PDAF and DFD.

Still waiting for higher models of Panasonic 😢 DFD in higher frame rates is a deal breaker for many of us

S1H2 is gonna be an insane market destroyer I really hope it has immensely upgraded features.

My only comment about the G9II having S5II ergonomics is that the G9 was the best physical ergonomics of any camera I'd ever picked up. If Panasonic wanted to make them the same to save $, making the S5IIx match the G9 makes some sense to me. But, it's fine. Still love the G9II, just would love it more with the old power-switch location, top screen, locking knob, and a back-right wheel that didn't set me to F16 all the time :-) Thanks for the video, you're always very thorough and considerate.

I was mostly referring to the comments saying that the fact that the G9 II uses S5 II body is somehow an insult to M43. That is largely a matter of preference / getting used to the controls, but I think that the S5 II / G9 II handling is objectively better. Top plate LCD is a waste of space for most users nowadays, the front dial is much easier to reach, the position of the PSAM dial is also better + you have separate drive mode dial.

The S5II is near perfect for my demands. But what is most irritating is, that the eyesensor is still active when the screen is folded out. There is no setting in the menu to let the eyesensor automatically switch off when the screen is folded out. One has to do this manually by the LVF-Button. For me this is a major issue and I hope Panasonic will fix this by a firmware update.

I'm not sure what is causing that, but I think that it has to adjust the exposure to acquire the focus correctly. I don't use shutter AF, so I don't have any experience with that.

The internal video image quality is still better on the first S5 and S1, the edge sharpening and chroma noise reduction of the S5II are disappointing. I hope the new S camera will not get the same internal video engine.
