Being an American who has lived in 3 Asian countries over the past 10 years, I 100% identify with what you're describing. Every day is an adventure, often in a good way, sometimes in a stressful way. It definitely gives you an appreciation for language. The loneliness thing can be a real issue for people. In Thailand, my wife and I managed to make a lot of friends through work and exercise, including many Thais. In China, it was a bit harder but we often hung out with our Chinese language tutor and a few expats. In Korea, our friend group is mostly expats. In America, I was not especially outgoing, but Asia made me much more outgoing and it really opened up my world in ways I never would have imagined before I got here.

Not a real cure for loneliness. He needs some in person time socializing and making friends, even if it's just someone to hang out with over coffee or someone with a shared interest. One on one time even if just once in a while is important to staying mentally healthy.

Glad to see you back! Some of my friends solo travel for long periods of time. You are definitely not alone in what you are experiencing. There are communities you can get involved in where you can meet up with people in the same places as you. Not everyone in these groups are extroverted and you may find one or two people who you can relate to and form bonds with. Wishing you well and also slightly jealous! That sounds like the most fun and terrifying adventure.

The loneliness bit is super real. My first time out of the country was to a very remote place in the Pacific. The air port was a hut sort of situation. When that plane took off and left me standing there, the only passenger to disembark, it was exactly as you described, like throwing on a lead jacket. It's a wild feeling, but the confidence you get on the other side of that feeling is unbelievable.

Thank you for your brutal honesty. I was unaware of the whole loneliness conundrum! It caught me off guard. As a fellow introvert, I think it takes us longer to realize the ramifications of loneliness! I often say that I could be on a deserted island for a year before I missed any human contact. That is probably a bunch of B.S.! Come home soon!

  • @pnw-coast

I've also imagined that I could do fine without human contact like your deserted island scenario, but I think I'd need a pet at least. Cat or dog. Loneliness doesn't have to mean people.

Timezones matter a lot for the lonely aspects. Being from the US, particularly when I was in Southest Asia, having to plan time to call family/etc. really was difficult vs the difference when I lived in Chile.

Great installment! I had selfishly been hoping that you would eventually foray into the Philippine Archipelago at some point in your Asian trek. My wife if from there.. we have family, proppity, and investments there.. our nearly 2 decade long plan has always been to end up over there permanently, we’re still here in the states for my elderly parents, mom here in TX, dad back in Chicagoland. Once again, Matt, thanks for all you have done for us and are continuing to do. And continue to take care of yourself.

Great recommendation about being proactive with having people visit and maintaining relationships. It really can hit fast when it hits. Loneliness is mental and physical. Sometimes it helps to get involved with expat groups in your area. Then you have resources without too much contact.

We are never alone. Our Spirit guides, higher self & the Divine are always with you. If you start feeling alone it's time to meditate and go within. We all our connected and meditation is like hooking you up to your network, phone system or wifi. Sit in stillness, deep breaths and open your heart & mind. If you have a question ask it, and then wait and listen to your inner voice. I'm alone most of the time, but I never feel lonely. It's all perspective. It's you telling yourself this isn't good, when most people don't go within If they are with people. You get sick because the divine wants to slow you down so you go within and connect. Turn on the bat phone or whatever you want to call it and know that everything you need is available to you. Every answer to any question is within your connected web of divine intelligence, just like you can ask Google any question you can ask your higher self, Spirit guides or the Divine any question. When we get sick it's because we are too wrapped up in this 3D world and GOD wants us to go within & connect. Some only reach for the Divine when they are in pain or ill. Do it regularly and you won't get ill. You will feel more loved than you have ever felt and the synchronicities will start connecting you to you life purpose. Life isn't about supporting ourselves, that's secondary. Life is about learning lessons and helping others. When you run across someone in need in your travels, no matter how simple the need, you are connecting to the divine intelligence of the universe. That person may of asked the universe for a little heping hand and their you are to help for a minute. As simple as helping an old woman cross the street. Listen to your inner voice and you will be connected to what your life path has intended for you. Perhaps even something that leads you to a life partner😊

So sorry to hear you went through Covid alone. You have learned so much self reliance and resilence. Honestly the health care in US and Canada is so crappy you were better off where people are treated with respect in other countries even as a foreigner. Western countries are trying to destroy their own citizens right now. Things are bad here in Canada. Really really bad.

I really hope you are writing. Not only are your personal insights interesting, but you have a solid (and natural!) command of descriptive English (these two points go hand in hand). I am not blowing smoke, if you are not writing and crafting words - about lonliness or neck pain, or whatever - you have a clear skill you are not utilizing. Of course, you do as you wish! Safest travels.

I’m going to spend this month focusing on my other business outside of reselling to see if I can grow that to something that I could do from abroad because I definitely don’t want to continue reselling unless I go to Australia or Canada because those are the only places I know of that eBay’s a real option.
