    I got it! What kind of land do you camp on? In my area you can camp on public land and collect rocks from there but you can cut trees or damage the landscape in any way so if you could explain that to me I’d be grateful. When I lived in Costa Rica on the Pacific coast we went shrimp hunting at night with spears. They were really more like big prawns that live in the rivers draining into the ocean or in this case into the Golfo Dulce. Their eyes reflect back pink when a flashlight hits them and we poked them in the head. The spears were usually made with 3 spokes from a bike wheel and a broom stick or piece of bamboo, and they usually attached the points with fishing line wrapped tight and glued to the stick. I had a couple cheap frog gigs that kinda worked but didn't last with the rocks. It would be interesting to see how you would make a spear for those prawns. Oh and yes, they were delicious. The sweatest nicest shrimp meat ever and the big ones are maybe 8" long. It was worth risking the fer de lance vipers around the river at night.

    Big prawns are delicious and fun to hunt. This spear is applicable in shallow water reefs, lagoons and pools. Growing up I made tons of spears from random things collected and to my surprise they worked well for carp, gar, frogs, snakes and other random water borne creatures. Thanks for sharing.

    @@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks the locals do use the same spears in tide pools at night to get octopus, lobster, crabs, and fish. The spear you made in the video wouldn't be good for the prawns. You could pin them to the bottom with it but it would be tough to impale them. I suppose you could use palm frond spines or something like that to make a primitive prawn spear without metal.

It predates the skills and the cultures. Someone had the original thought and was able to communicate it to the people around him so that it became a thing. It all began with an individual idea. Who invented the spear? That guy had a name.

Thanks for answer.

    After the reinforceing binding for the haft points split is added, would you then use tar or pine pitch to waterproof your binding material ? Would that not slow down the degradation of the binding material? Also, after using the spear a few times, would you add a wrapped cordage on the haft at the throwing point to aid in gripping the spear when in cold and wet conditions ? Could an adlattal thrower be used to enhance the overall performance of the fish spear, or would you next priority be to make a bow and fishing arrows with cordage to aid in securing larger fish like a big salmon.20 to 30 pounds.

  • @DonnyDustsPaleoTracks

    @DonnyDustsPaleoTracks

    3 ай бұрын

    All could be done. I typically like to seal the binding with pitch for long term use. The pitch adds forward weight and keeps the throws short and the thrusts on point. This way is a versatile way and be adapted based on the environment.

  • @DonnyDustsPaleoTracks

    @DonnyDustsPaleoTracks

    First…heat low not to burn the wood, but hot enough to heat the wood and what I mean be heating is the water in the wood “steams”, softening the wood fibers allowing for the bend to occur. Too much heat, it burns and the wood fibers become too dry.

    Hello! Have you ever thought of bringing seeds of edible plants with you, that you would find on your walkabouts that are native to that region? Perhaps thousands of seeds of different varieties, & your pet dog could have a saddle pack as well to help you carry that seed cargo to plant. Maybe even some tubers man. Personally I think if the world becomes too viral.. I would want somewhere to go to, & it would be nice to see all the food I would have planted, & maybe a nice well thought out home already built, if not many of them, hidden well & stocked with what I would need to feel comfortable. I think it could become a time where you might feel comfortable to escape in a time when the world is short of breath as they crap themselves because of disease. If the toilet paper runs out people should buy a hand trowel. And that's just what might happen as toilet paper disappears off the shelves. Get one of those drinking filtration straws you can force water backwards through them to clean em out. Bring some herbal medicine seeds. Bring lots of pharma meds for congestion, headache, infections of the ears eyes & nose. Lots and lots of pemmican in triple air tight packing, many metal bolts and arrows, a nice bow at each hidden home, a cross bow, warm winter camo clothing. Safety glasses, safety glasses man. Ear medication, lots of it, everything that will knock back anything that could dull your senses. Have a very high quality solar panel gadget, & a long distance radio. I wish I was able to do just what you might be able to do if you wanted to do it. Peace.
