Keep this art going...people are so spoiled nowadays by computers (vinyl lettering). This video is by far the best i'd seen, the holding of the brush is the way to do it, it gives better control when you twirl the brush. Its been 20 years since i'd picked up a brush. But its a skill once you mastered, that will stick with you like riding a bike. Thanks for renewed lesson!

I used to take chinese calligraphy classes and was taught to use the 3 finger, verticle technique you advocate. Those masters have incredible brush control.

Keep rock’n! One thing that helps me is to pretend you’re teaching someone how to do each stroke, it really gets you laser focused and pressures you to make every stroke as perfect as possible.

As fine as this letterman is , what I find missing in most of the videos about lettering that I see on You-Tube , is the thing you have to do , once the brush mechanics are established , and that is LAYOUT ! As important as brush skills are , the real deal maker/ breaker in sign work , is layout (the positioning of words on a sign to read well ) - the true magic of a sign

I don't know if this has to do with me being left handed but I use three fingers when I write with a regular pencil normally. it always confuses me when I see right handed people not doing it with three and they get confused when they see me!

I feel like I have more control with three fingers. also, thank you for the compliment! if you're interested in seeing what I'm up to nowadays I have a small instagram account @bellaesc.a (i mostly use it just for documenting my work so i don't expect many followers). davidographicsguy well, i'm still in school. I'm 15 actually! I desperately want it to be my profession but I know it's going to take a lot of work to get to that point. Plus, there's that of doubt about whether I'd be able to be successful. Thank you for checking out my page, and I'm glad you like my portraits. I'm trying to improve in that area because most of my paintings so far have been of dogs. A lot of suburban moms like having pet portraits so I make money off of that, and it's nice because it's an alternative to having a part-time job.

David, what are the differences of 'Thinner' and 'Reducer'?

Reducer is designed to reduce viscosity without reducing opacity, thinner reduces both.

I just started practicing. I've been using glass but am having such trouble on curves. The brush just starts going sideways instead of following the line. I'm sure it's me but should I not practice on glass?

Buy this: www.amazon.com/Royal-Brites-Poster-Inches-50-Sheet/dp/B000RSZWDK Glass is not good for practice. This poster board has a slightly coated surface, great for practice. You can gloss spray paint it different colors to break up the monotony 😀

Yeah, 1-Shot works great on any slick surfaces. Keep your practice posters so you can see how you’re progressing. The posters will probably arrive slightly damaged because of the light packaging, but it doesn’t matter for cheap practice boards. The main thing is to love doing every stroke of a letter knowing you’re painting them with your own hand. And when you’re practicing, talk your way through every stroke like you’re teaching someone, it helps keep you motivated and accurate. Have fun! 😀

I use penetrol flood to prep smooth glass or surface that will not grab paint , makes it stick used for oil based paints , and can thin paint or be used to clear coat satin finish over patina paint and rust

@@davidographicsguy not really just a product us house painters use over old gloss enamel to make water base paint stick ,even vanished timber or glass ,just rub it on with a rag ,,tonight i pinstriped my old patina sign writing paint and brush box first try at it ,, using size 0 alligator dagger ,suits it looks like was done in 60s :)
