1 on 1 private tutoring - some tips & thoughts

this video consists of a private tutoring class example, the kid is 5 years old. 2 games are introduced - board game (don't prepare the game beforehand, will explain in the video why) and word cross (review words and kill the last 5-10 mins). Just for the record - my videos are ethical, all students' parents & school managers who appear in the videos are aware of the shooting and posts.

Even though my students are a bit older, this was extremely helpful. I loved how you engaged and made the child confortable, while respecting his wandering mind.

Hi Cici again, thanks so much again. Yesterday I implemented your tips with my 4 year old pupil and it helped so much. This shift in point of view was totally revolutionary. Instead of insisting with songs that she doesn't always feel like singing and acting I had her do a craft activity with the caterpillar foods. She was speaking English, she was cooperating and she was really proud of herself. I'll try and make a board game with foods or princesses and have her colour it in. There's so little material around about 1-1 tutoring to small children that I cherished everysingle word you said. XXX

Aw, what a lucky kid having such a lovely tutor. I was searching for ideas for 1-to-1 games for tutors to play with students when I came across your video. It's adorable ❤

Wow! What a very inspiring video. Thank you for showing that being a children's English teacher is difficult. I once felt disappointed with myself when children did not want to study. As you said, there are times when children don't want to talk at all and only play games. In that situation, I felt useless because I could not get them back to the lesson. I only teach following what they like. What I did was the right thing. Thanks for pointing that out. I feel again that what I do is useful for my students.

Thanks for that, it was extremely helpful. I teach to a 4 year old, she can't read yet. I had 3 classes already and it's been extremely challenging. I tried with TPR and chants but it's not always successful. What she mainly does is she runs away to get some toys. Last time I was doing a class on the Very Hungry Caterpillar and she was hiding the material from me. I was to transform this incidents into "speaking prompts" but she was really unwilling to co-operate. That was so frustrating. If you have any more tips that'd be much appreciated really.

@@mihirpant8474 Hi there! Unfortunately I've quit teaching that child because planning was very time wasting to plan and many times I couldn't convince the child to play. A big disadvantage was that the family wouldn't take part to the lesson but were being very judgmental. :( Let me know how it goes!

So Idk who might see this but if you have experience I'd like some advice. I've been tutoring a kid for a month now, this is my first time tutoring he's a 10 yo kid in 5th grade, and whenever I start teaching him it takes a lot of time due to : 1) Him not focusing too well, and hates studying so whenever I try to tell him to do something he starts to nag a lot. 2) His mother interfered with the session in a "use this way better" or "his old teacher used to 1 2 3" 3) The parent asks for more than the regular agenda such as preparing for the next session etc... 4) I keep reviewing what he took in class for the day and give him extra exercises 5) I'm also a bit slow while teaching because it all is new things. The kid is really intelligent he always got high grades so the other day when his math grade dropped a little bit to 7.5/10 the mother threw a tantrum. She said her son had never gotten such a grade before when I looked at the test I saw that all the mistakes happened because he didn't focus on the questions, I asked if he reviewed his answers before giving the teacher the paper and he said yes. I'm a bit lost on what to do, I did my best tutoring him, explaining things, and giving him exercises. But everything I do seems "not good enough" compared to his "old teacher" who tutored him for 3 years. I know I will get better by time but I really need to know how to deal with the mother and the child. I'm doing my best I don't know what there else to do.

Could you please answer , do you think it’s better to teach them using their first language or an all English class like the regular classrooms where they shouldn’t use their mother language

I know it's 2 months later but.. I had thought of this too, and it was an easy-ish realization too. It's about making it fun, especially for a younger child who just wants to play XP. Get into their interests a little, be their friend and even share your interests. I can share things like programming, making games, making 3d models and such, and they all look cool, especially as i am a very visual oriented and practical person, which matches with someone just learning everything at a young age. And even using visualizations and easier relatable things, intermesh it with the studies, math especially for game stuffs, because you can be very visual and display all sorts of simulations that will make their eyes go all 'COOOOL!!!!", haha
