I wish people understood that to do art you’re gonna have to go through a phase of not even liking what you draw. It might look wonky for a bit but the more you practice the more you improve.

I think what people dont know is that all artists had to overcome that one starting phase. I'm sure every artist has experienced that feeling of "I dont know how I'm supposed to draw this even if I tried!" It's one of the hurdles that all artists eventually overcome just from practicing and studying which makes them slowly understand the theories and fundamentals in an intuitive sense

Yeah. I’ve drawn almost every day for over ten years, largely dragons. People ask me how my dragons are so good. Pretty much every day, I either draw something dragon related or watch a video on drawing dragons

as a cartoonist, going into college i didn’t think model drawing would help me. one year later, i can say my anatomy in my art has significantly improved :) listen to him he’s right!!

Glad you were able to get good classes on that stuff, it really does make a difference. I remember in highschool I shared proko's anatomy for artists playlist with her, telling her i found it super helpfulbc i did. She was pretty adamant she didnt need jt

@@cnr0118 it’s a comics degree, not very common. i picked the school i go to bc it’s the only one near me that had it. otherwise i think illustration or animation would be the way to go

Some people start off with a better ship, this is called talent, but they still must make the same journey as everyone else. Don't be discouraged if they reach their destination sooner than you, because your own efforts will still get you there eventually. And understand that the journey never ends, you simply realize that what you thought was your destination was merely one port of call and there are limitless ports to journey toward, some of which are more suitable for you than others. Honestly, a good metaphor if it can be stretched that far without breaking.

I've been looking at getting into doing some figure drawings for awhile, but they've always seemed "out of reach" or "above my head-" always inaccessible in some way. But this really does make it look like it's something that I could do, or that I could at least try, alongside you. Thank you for making art more accessible for all of us.

The most important thing to learn with figure drawing is to not get bogged down with details. They are not what you're here for. My art professor in college killed this notion for many people by starting us off with one minute figure drawing practice before cutting that all the way down to 15 second sessions. We'd do three to five in a go before we moved on to something else. It was a warmup for the students but also a way to break people of the habit of spiraling endlessly in circles trying to capture details instead of major shapes and forms. Details can be captured later or simply made up from memory if needed, but the form and pose must be captured faithfully to properly convey the feeling. When you remove enough time from each drawing then you must learn to intuit how to convey the form to the paper in the shortest amount of time. It took me a few sessions before I gave up trying to use a pencil or even the sharp corners of a piece of conte crayon or charcoal and instead went to the side or a sharpened edge of the media to lay down broad strokes just to fill in volume and capture the shapes in a broad fashion. Just be prepared to be disappointed in these sketches. They are not going to look impressive or be particularly inspiring, but they will help you.

Same,my art teacher only allows us to draw with rulers and only from one perspective,with 3D objects always having a 45° angle.I know other perspectives and I drew with them.He said that I have to redraw the whole thing because it needs to be from one perspective only and that it would be unfair to others.I feel like he’s repressing me from drawing what I want

yes yes yes! My high school art teacher at the beginning of class every day would have a volunteer come up and sit in the middle of the room (desks were placed in an "o" shape so that reference could be placed in the middle of the room) we all got a charcoal stick and would have 1 minute to draw the gesture, and then 5 minutes to refine the forms. Most of our projects weren't figure drawing related, but he always had us practice drawing from a live model. I think that's probably the MOST valuable thing he ever taught me... aside from color theory that is.

This isn't entirely true, but it also isn't wrong. There are tricks you can learn but none will immediately make you a better artist. Only practice can do that.

I love this. It's such a great timing for me, personally. I was looking for videos and creators to help me improve my proportions and poses, and this came in clutch! I was so lost in direction I went straight to drawing a skull instead to understand how to draw a face better (it actually helped and turned out pretty neat!)

Whenever I'm at a place like a park or a beach, I do quick sketchy drawings of people I see! I do some basic shapes with colored pencil, then add a little more detail with pen :) it's very fun!

I love when you do things that have helped you over the years to help all of us become better

“Just draw them. Every day” That’s what I’ve done for a solid 14 or so years and I’ve finally reached the point where I’m finally able to draw exactly how I imagine things to turn out It’s a great feeling, honestly. 100% worth every single bit of time and effort

Seriously, great advice. You can call them tricks, but they’re not really tricks, they’re kinda just things you need to know. You just gotta practice, because that’s the no1 way to develop your understanding and memory of body parts. Great videos and advice as always Scott!

yes!! thank you!! people get so angry when the only advice i have for them to get better at art is to practice, but really, that's all you can do. like you said, there's no trick to getting better instantaneously. you HAVE to practice if you want to get better at art.

I love these! I tried doing a 1, 5, 10, and 60 minute drawing of it, because It thought it would be fun. And it was! The first one was a stick figure, but by practicing on the other ones, I’m actually proud of the 60 minute drawing. It’s not much, but I’m pretty happy with how it came out, so that’s good enough for me.

Anyone who is still in college for art now I absolutely recommend taking a live model class. Learning proportion and how to break down a person into shapes was a life saver. Though my humans are starting to lack again because I get lazy- that time had some of my favorite pieces made. Even my 5 minute sketches were pretty great by the end. If I could find/take the time to have another live model class I would for the refresher. But for now, 1 minute sketches should do!

Genuine, substantive advice on how to routinely build a skill. That sounds like the best hack there could possibly be.

Practice makes progress. These 1,5,10,60 min exercises are.indeed wonderful. Nothing replaces practice. My drawing imlroved immensely tbrough this. I loom forward to the new series. Hope you are feeling healtbier and well rested, Scott!

When I started contour drawing in school, it was terrible to finally look at (I think for everyone it is especially in the beginning). But after a while of practice I found myself looking at my paper less when I was drawing regularly. It got me to trust my eyes more and I was shocked how accurate my eyes and pencil moving in sync could be. But yes, practice!

Being a fellow artist myself I can confirm what he said is absolutely right there is no shortcut in art just practice and also don't forget to enjoy the process of creating art!

Ive always been horrible at proportions and stuck to drawing faces, but i think this is a sign i should finally try again haha

I'm already very confident drawing people, but this inspired me to set my own challenge for myself: everyday do five 1 minute sketches of a person (complex pose), a building, a landsacpe, an object, and an animal, in an attempt to improve my drawing skills in every area, not just people. Looking forward to giving it a go!

Thank you it's so helpful to have something that tells me to do something in a day. It is so easy to just be invisible and do nothing, and having something that gets me to create is super nice.

Scott you are my hero. This was the point in my art journey that I kinda marooned. I was getting better at figure drawing but just haven't been able to get back in the habit of practicing them. But seeing you do it makes me wanna get right into it, and to hear that you did 3 hours a day in college? Yeah I got nothing to complain about when I have to take a 30 minute break every 30 minutes when I'm drawing, 30 on, 30 off to let my hands rest and my brain vent because it starts feeling like it's overheating.

I just love that, my 7 year old struggles a bit with writing and reading in school and when he asks me how I got that good with certain things, my answer litterally is all the time "practice" I also say, there is no need for hours upon hours, just a bit of time each and every day... I also pointed out that he might want to consider how he achieved certain things and he is slowly realising, that repeating it each day is what got him there... also the same what I tell my two "homework students" don't go for hours a day, little parts and then every day one of them is doing it by now and making good progress with understanding and pronouncing the language so thank you for sharing ❤️

Fugure drawing helped me get faster and more fluid with my drawings. It was one of my favourite parts of university. Its been a few years and I'm quite rusty. Finally getting back into drawing more regularly now

I appreciate this more than people who are like “you need to learn everything in this order, and you shouldn’t be drawing these things until you get good at these other things” it’s super demotivating

Figure drawing is my favorite! I usually don't have a reference, just my imagination. I play with hairstyles, clothes, poses, sometimes scenes; it's great!

That is so true! I always said that I couldn't draw people. And when I tried, I really couldn't, so I almost never drew them. But about a year ago, I realised that I wanted to be able to draw people. I want them in my landscape or make old west scenes. So I started to practise. I'm still not where I want to be, but now I can say: I can draw people. Sometimes they still go horribly wrong, but it is getting much better! Watching your video's certainly helps! You helped me understand how I could draw a face, so thank you!

I always loved when people told me that they can only draw stick figures because I have always drawn stick figures to figure out flow and movement for the pictures I used to draw. I would always reply that stick figures are a great start to a picture!

You made art fun for me again, I was having so many issues with art and stressed about it but you helped me find joy in my art again❤

When I started drawing as a kid quick sketches helped me out with getting my drawings to look balanced and proportioned properly-with lots of practice and redone drawings. (Many a drawing got tossed in the trashcan due to not coming out right/couldn't be fixed, like nothing looked right now matter what I did.) I'm in my mid forties and still draw/paint when the mood hits me. Sometimes I have to walk away for awhile then come back to it to view from a different angle. Also at my age and the experience I have with drawing sometimes I have to scrap something and start from square one. Also being a lefty has it's own challenges but nothing I haven't overcome so far.

I love gesture drawing, possibly too much. I used to make a habit of drawing 60-90 seconds gestures every day. I haven't been that good about it in a long time, but it's still my favorite thing to do when I don't know what to draw.

Your videos are honestly amazing they've helped me so much to get better and has just generally improved my art as a hopefully future comic book artist thank you because your vids just really are amazing

Glad you put this video out. Too many people want a trick to get good. In this perspective book I read, the author said, 1 part theory 50 parts practice. I always think about this when I'm drawing. You haven't seen the hours of practice professionals put into this craft before they got where they are. And all of them still do put just as much time into it now as they ever did.

somehow I’ve never thought of using stick figures as a way to get better anatomy and I tried it today to do a more interesting pose than all the normal, standing, kind of boring ones I do. I was able to do the pose quicker than I would normally do the poses I do normally. *it also looked better!* thanks Scott! :)
