I know the feeling of time limits in photography, this video really hits close hime. Due to my health I cannot go on photo walks longer then 30 to 45 minutes. It is a challenge, but you can make it work. Especially in areas you know well, but getting creative within those limits is a whole other challenge.

I suggest going out (if possible) at 4-5 in the morning. During the day, it's hard to find something stable for stack.There is usually no wind in the morning either, it is quiet and somehow more pleasant

macro can be crazy, can go out for an hour or 2 and ill have 3/4 great photos I'm proud of, sometimes I can go out for 30 mins and result in 10/15 photos I'm proud of - never quite know what's gonna happen when you start! But that add's to the mystery and the satisfaction is higher when you find a great subject nail the shot.

Some actual bangers from that the om-1, the spider was really cool to see. I did watch the first 10 and then start skpping though to bangers but the full length format was cool to see.

I liked the format and the walk. The video footage was fine. You had good comments on how you were shooting (specs) which is helpful.

I usually step outside into my garden or hedgerows and spend around 30 mins taking images. I usually try to find a plant that the pollinators are visiting and stand by it. I may take 60 to 200 images in bursts of 3 to 5. (I do not stack) I will reject around 90% of the images and of the 10% left maybe half would be good shots. So if I took 100 shots maybe 5 would be good but of course it varies. I am usually trying the to capture the insect pollinating or flying so they are seldom still and maybe only on the flower for less than 1 sec.. The good thing is I get outside on a nice day and spend some time looking at plants and insects and maybe get a few good shots.

You have inspired me to do macro. I started off with a microscope objective but now I have had a lot of fun with my canon 105 macro lens, manual focus. I have my best luck with it on a tripod since I don't have a flash... As an Astro photographer I know the value of stacking so one of these days I'm going to try stacking with macro !

Thanks for this format, I really enjoyed it 🙂! We have a smal macro group which also uses OMD EM1. Could you please let us know your camera stettings like stack step wide, ISO and which f no. you use in combination with the Raynox? We usually start with stacking step wide=3 and f=4 and ISO 200-400 as a starting point for stacking. Do you use the high speed sync of your flash? Thanks for your answer and greetings from northern Germany.

I'm still experimenting, but the settings I use most of the time is: ISO 200, f/7.1, 1/100 s shutter speed and 1/16 in strength on the flash. For stacking I use a step size of 3.

There also weren't a lot of soft-bodied insects, especially aphids, which ladybugs eat so there weren't a lot of them there.

Macro photography isn’t easy as focusing can be quite difficult especially in windy conditions. I love Insect photography but don’t usually go to woodlands. On my local reserve I get Butterflies, Dragonflies, Bees, Wasps, Flies, Shieldbugs, Beetles, Spiders and basically anything that moves. I loves your photo stacked Weevil and it is just great to get out in the open and lose yourself to the world.

The beetle at 36:12 is a species of soldier beetle in the family Cantharidae

Your soldier beetle at 52:43 looks to be Cantharis paradoxa

the raynox is great but it makes it very difficult I find, such a tiny amount of the subject is in focus so unless you're taking several images to splice together I just prefer using the standard 1:1. I was using Laowa 90mm for a while but I got a bit tired of not having AF so I'm using the Sony 90mm and its refreshing to have AF again together with the stabilisation in the lens to go with my A7C IBIS.

Yeah depends on what the subject is. But our insects in Sweden are very tiny so most of the time I need a Raynox.

Is the, "Waa waa waa waaaa!" a specific feature to only OM systems, or can I get it for my Nikon? Wait, never mind, I'd get tired of it going off all day when I shoot. 😉 😂

Micael, do you have any rivers? Lakes? maybe try other places. There are beautiful dragonflies, especially in places close to water. If you have flower meadows, you can always photograph butterflies. They are also beautiful, colorful, they contribute a lot to photography ;) It would be nice if you showed some different places

Yes there was a lake full of dragonflies just 100m from this location. But that video wouldn’t have been very entertaining because I would have spent 1 hour for just 1 good dragonfly shot :)

17:00 Assassin bug - _Reduviidae_ perhaps?

The larvae at 16:05 are those of either leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae) or sawflies (such as family Tenthredinidae). My money is on Chrysomelidae. Need to see a closeup of the head, especially the eyes, to be sure. They'll probably be in the adult stage in about 3-4 weeks, so a return visit is a good idea.

Definitely get the Laowa 65mm if you can afford it. I think it is the best macro lens for APS-C.

I got the Laowa 65mm for X-T4 last year and really enjoy using it but was struggling with photo stacks because it is a wholly manual lens - fine for studio macro but not great in the field with insects. As a result I recently bought the Fuji 80mm F2.8 macro and am loving it. Automatic stacking works great and you can use the 1.4x teleconverter with it to give you more working room which is nice for skittish insects, especially butterflies. I will keep the Laowa for now because it is useful to have the x2 magnification. I have also heard good things about the new Fuji 30mm macro lens.

I walk the Arizona 115 degree desert for 4-6 hours to find one insect......now I found a trick, and that' looking for Javalina or Coyote Feces..... and in the desert the insects attack feces for food and moisture source ......

Dear Outdoors Michael, you don't have to apologise or feel sorry for it is not an invasion of privacy when they're doing it outside in the wide open for all other bug folks (and bigger than bug ones) to see. I think they might even enjoy being little exhibitionists 😮

The true bug at 17:04 is a species of damsel bug (Nabidae).

how does focus stacking work with flash? Surely the flash misses a lot of the photos in the stack? Say you're shooting a 40 photo stack, how many times would the flash even fire?

With the Godox v350 it never misses a shot. You can take up to 20 at a fast pace before it starts pausing. But if you lower the rate slightly it can go longer.
