    1 HP is the output power. The input power is probably close to 1000 Watts (real) and the input Volt*Amp product is probably around 1400. So I guess 1400 W is overclocked a bit. But with all that wind blowing I don't think heating will be a problem! Haha. Induction motors are rated a bit conservatively in the sense that they can be in still air with an ambient temperature of 40C, and still deliver rated power with a lifespan of years.

  • @vikassm

    @vikassm

    @@mckenziekeith7434 Yeah! I've seen big variation in rated power & peak power of household motors, but never measured a 1hp(746w?) motor drawing in excess of 3hp (2kw+ 😱) No wonder Matthias tripped the breakers so many times 🤣🤣 Although, This experiment did give me a whole new perspective and a hell of a lot of newfound respect for pre-jet engine aircraft engineers! My grand-dad used to work at the local aircraft manufacturing plant back in the 60s-70s. This is in Bangalore, India, so the scene was quite similar to pre-ww2 USA. I've seen hand-made wooden props with finishing that would put most jewellery manufacturers to shame 🤣 Just didn't realise until now how much work it would have been to make all that (well, the whole aircraft) by hand! Can't imagine how people back then made precision parts, without any computing power whatsoever. No CAD, no CNC, Just paper drawings and manual machining work!! Ok I'm done. Just wandering down memory lane 🤣 Edit: Rewatched the video, that was 3000w (more than 4hp) on a 1hp motor 😱😱

  • @mckenziekeith7434

    @mckenziekeith7434

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@vikassm Induction motors are rated very truthfully. The nameplate lists Voltage, horsepower, full-load amps, full-load horsepower, full-load RPM, and usually/often power factor and efficiency also. If you supply the rated voltage, the motor will deliver full load power drawing full-load amps. When the impeller was too large, the motor was operating at a lower speed and much higher torque than rated. Thus, the output (and input) power were too high. But it is a fundamental mistake to think the input power and output power are the same. A 1 HP motor can put out 1 HP with the proper load. But it will need to consume more than 1 HP in electrical power to do it. So when you say 3000 W is more than 4 HP on a 1 HP motor, you are not making a correct comparison. Even if the motor was putting out 1 HP, it would use around 1kW of electrical power because of its efficiency.
