@@tonys_workshop I was only there 3 days covering. I was working 6 Doosan CNC machines. Pretty much every thing metal except tracks were made in house on those machines. The owner of the firm is a genuinely decent man too.

Hi Tony, I think I may have to get one of these bad boys! I just watched the Australian restoration of a Tiger 1. Your model is remarkably close in detail right down to the bare chassis! Great job so far and I am glad that you are enjoying the build experience. I have found that when you start to tire of the job it is always better to stop and come back to it, only when you feel refreshed and in the mood for doing so. Results can be much better in the long run. Enjoy! 😉

1/6th scale! Now that's what I call a scale model tank, not doing things by halves! The only problem I can envisage is space....space to build it and space to keep it!

1 and 2 numbers on track segments stand for cavity numbers in the injection mold. Doesn't mean they differ in any way, only come from different cavities in the mold.

Hi, Just seen this video. I built the first generation early Tiger from Armortek. Your track links look to be cleaner castings than on my Tiger. Also, if I remember correctly the pins on my Tiger were held in with grip washers but I did drill the pins and used some soft copper wire to hold the pins in place. One issue I had was debris getting stuck in the tracks and going around the return roller. The motors were powerful enough to break a track link which was a pain to replace in the field. In the end I made the return roller tension adjustment spring loaded which solved the problem. This said I drove the wheels off my Tiger through all sorts of mud and rough terrain, its a great well built model. I think the best out there. I also made the first generation Sherman which is a superb model. Alas both are sold now, I believe the Sherman, which I built as a Firefly is in the USA now.

Hi Allan, thanks for watching and your comments. Yes from what I understand Armortek have greatly improved their kits. I guess they really do listen to the end users. I still have to be careful of debris getting stuck in the tracks, especially small gravel parts. I always jack up the tank after driving and inspect the track for debris...Not had a link break so far but still early days...I guess that is why they provide spare links... I would have loved the Sherman as this is one of my favourite tanks of that era...The Firefly...was that the British army version?

@@tonys_workshop Yes the Firefly was the British Army version with the 17 pdr gun. I bought a model kit of it and copied that. On the Tiger the channel formed by the dual track horns seemed to naturally gather debris. On the full size Tiger the track horns are not solid and have a hole cast in them. This may be for lightening the track and/or allowing debris to escape. The road wheels can ride over the debris easily but if it goes around the return roller it really pulls the track tight. I used to run the tracks very slack and I never had one come off, even turning tightly on grass.

Thanks John, I have built a number of 1:35 scale models and equally enjoyed building those...My intro video shows a train I built in that scale...but yes, this is a big step up..but in a way easier to work with as they are larger and easier to handle...Armortek, scale everything including the armour plate thickness, it is equally challenging and a pleasure to work with their models. Really appreciate you watching and commenting and hope that you continue to follow and enjoy.

Heya, Nice Build there :) As for the Numbers on the Track links, usualy these numbers shows the Number of the Mold they used, so they had at least 2 Molds for more and faster Production i guess, u can find such stuff on Plastic and Glas Bottles to.

As a retired U.S. Army Tanker, we always made one track longer by one track link . It makes the tank handle better on the roads.....

He said that the instructions say to make each track 96 links long. But he said that he made them 94. How will that affect the tank’s performance?

@@mase7557 Hi Mase, thanks for watching. This is fine...Some tank builders of this Tiger model have taken them down to 93 links. Even these scale models with the weight applied will loosen once bedded in.

@@tonys_workshop it has to do with the track tension . Only one side would need track tensioning at a time.....but all crews would diligently do track maintenance. Our biggest problem on M60 series and first generation of M1 Abrams was end connectors coming loose and popping off the track blocks. Love your show !

Hi one thing I can add is having replaced tracks on numerous occasions on large excavators and other machines which have dozer tracks it helps when joining the track on the machine if you join it at the sprocket end then there is less need to hold the links while inserting the pin as the teeth of the sprocket hold the links in the correct position for you without any struggling

@@tonys_workshop well that's exactly righ I had to learn on 30 tonne excavators and prinoth ahwi mulchers look that up on KZread if you like we had an RT 400 and a 200 as well which I drove most of the time as I could transport it only weighing 15 tonnes anyway I digress I have subscribed because Amourtek are just down the road from me an I'm considering buying one but not sure if it would be ready assembled or kit form . keep up the good work and if I have anything else to add I will

The 1 ore 2 on the track links is probably to be able to trace back the mold chamber were it was made

-Impressive!... -After looking @ Armortek's Jagdpanther or Ferdinand/Elephant examples, both already bearing the interior space needed, I could see myself mod'n/refitting the cannon with a semi-auto, 10-shot, CAL-22-Long Rifle, Ruger 10/22 "Charger" -(pistol length)- receiver & barrel combo!-(The receiver is just 6" long & 3" tall w/trigger housing)- -Add a solenoid/servo for remote trigger operation n' function... -And it would be totally legal where I reside! @ least for now-(Im sure the U.S Gov't busy-bodies are working on a new "law" forbidding such fanciful oddities?;)- I think Ill stick to 1/35th scale to keep it safe-sh as possible...;) -Great work!

The numbers 1 and 2 on the track parts distinguish which mold cavity the part came out of in the factory. When parts come off the line and QC checks them they need to know which cavity the part came from in case adjustments need to be made.

What is a glaring error by Armortek is that the track guide horns are solid. It really does shout out. For the gigantic amount of money these things cost you would have thought a basic scale detail like this would be fixed.

Hi Darren, I have several films on painting, but generally time lapse these as they can be a tad tedious for the watcher...The Hetzer was a good example of painting using a camo scheme. (last three videos of the build)I use pre-mixed spray cans

Would adding a little dab or two of white lithium grease to those track link pins before putting them together have been a good idea?

Good question and I think probably yes, but again no mention of this in the instructions. I thought of regular grease, but then worried about picking up dirt etc, so fitted them dry. Use Birchwood Casey's gun blue to blacken your tracks. Works great.

Tony put 1 pin the wrong way round and paint white. Best to split track up at the sprocket

Ahh, A bucket list item for me is to build one of these! As you rightly say preparation is important. You answered one of my questions already (it weighs 250 Kilos) could please add dimensions? (will it go through a normal-sized door?) How will you get such a big cat off your bench! and I also assume a trailer or panel van is a must if you intend moving it around. Loving the build! I have been asking about a software update to allow a simulated gear change along with engine tone (I see it sort of with gun recoil) but the electric motor is so smooth (whereas the "driver" would have to change gear ) I will very much enjoy your progress thank you

Hi Jim, thanks for watching and commenting. The net weight is 150kg, then the motion packs approx (from memory) approx 40kg...add the two 12 volt batteries and it is up there over 200kg...put it this way, you aint lifting this by hand :-) dimensionally approx 1550mm in length including the gun barrel, just under 600mm in width and with added figures height approx 550mm. It certainly goes through a normal size door, but be mindful that its heavy and the metal tracks will chew up nice finishes. I do cover this later on in the build, but I transfer my tank from the bench on to a table scissor lift and use a folding disabled ramp to drive the tank from the table lift on to the floor. This can also be used to drive the tank up into an estate car, van, SUV, trailer etc. Interesting thought on the gear change, that would be excellent as well as the tank recoil after the gun is fired..probably the only thing lacking on this amazing model...Hope you keep watching...more to come.

Hi and thanks for watching. I used Fosco Industrial Army Paint Color: WH. Dunkel Gelb, 400ML spray Matt for the entire tank. I used an grey etching primer for the prep work. Hope this helps and thanks also for your positive comment. If I can help on anything else, please do not hesitate to ask..

Can you Blue the tracks with gun bluing? Its a liquid that might give them an oxide black coating that would look natural. As opposed to spray paint...

Sorry not really up on this area.....Spray painting them is inexpensive and when its been driven for a short while and the paint wears in all the contact parts, they look pretty realistic. Are the left and right tracks specific for each side or are they the same?

Hi Sam, Thanks for watching and commenting. On the model they are exactly the same. It has been pointed out the the numbers 1 & 2 on the links refer only to the casting mould. I know that on some of the full size tanks the tracks can differ from left to right. Hope you continue to follow my build.

Hi Gary, yes another lengthy process but in a bizarre way, I actually enjoyed it. Yes, I ended up with 92 links per track in the end. Once the additional weight was applied and the tracks started to loosen up, it definitely needed links removed...works a treat now..thanks for watching and your continued support is very much appreciated.

Hi Tony, thanks for watching and for your positive comment...I am using a Steel Motorbike Repair scissor lift jack stand - Anti-Slip 500kgs. Available across the internet anywhere from £40 to £50. A brilliant tool and without which I would have struggled. I would use a ratchet with appropriate size socket if you have one, to raise and lower as the handle it comes with is too short..Hope this helps...

To join the track, it is easier to have the 'split' on the sprocket: the the track parts will be aligned and the track pin will slide in easy

Really enjoying your channel, ive built two HENG LONGS 1/16th with my kids mostly the kids, they upgraded electronics , gearbox and motors. Ive just started a 1/16TH Tiger 1 from Hatchett mags, 150 ish magazines in several plastic boxes.. great fun. A lot of your parts seem the same as the Hatchett tank. Will you fit an engine /motors ? . Im seriously thinking of buying a Armourtek vehicle not sure which one yet. I live in Norway so a drive to the UK for my summer holidays could be a plan.

Hi Dean, thanks for your comment and for watching my videos...Heng Long models are very detailed and I did consider one, but wanted to go big :-) and this is big...I have opted for all the option packs which include full motion, sound, gun recoil, machine gun, smoke and lights..Building a tank with over 150 separate mag issues...now that is patience. If you are looking to buy from Armortek, they do ship to Norway and although the shipping cost is high, I'm pretty sure you save on paying the VAT, so could work out cheaper than buying here in the UK...not sure if there is any import duty?....just a thought and it may be worth looking in to....Hope you still choose England for your holidays regardless, especially now it's a Coronation year :-)...Thanks again for watching and hope you continue to follow...

I like the 1/16th scale so do my old eyes. Hatchetes Tiger 1 is heavily detailed inside and out, enjoying taking my time and painting/weathering as i go along. Working out how to motorise it. Hi Jeff and thanks for watching...Apologies, I don't really have a direct answer to that question, other than my early research on this late variant seem to suggest that the links were cast with the guide horns...as for why the tracks did not have the ice cleats, that would be one for Armortek.. As I stated from the start of my build, I am a novice and just finding my way through very slowly...hope you continue to watch...

Due sometime in March according to Armortek...cant wait!!! Thats exactly what I have...it dawned on me early on in the build and I had to work out how I was going to remove it from the bench, transport, store and transfer to my car...There is a lot to consider when building a model of this size and weight and all part of the learning curve......but, objectives achieved and this is covered later on in my videos....

Hi Dara, thanks for watching and your question....Definitely not the track and pins and it's no longer a requirement for the axles according to the Armortek instructions. I guess the modern sealed unit bearings on the Axle remove the need to grease. I know some builders still do this, but I chose to follow the instructions. Hope this answers your question and also hope you continue to follow my build.

Couldn't you of used a drill on the jack to make it easier n quicker? How many kg will it be once it's finished?

Hi and thanks for watching and your comment...Interesting question...Not sure the shaft would fit in a cordless..The socket size is the same as a wheel brace...But I will definitely check that as it would make it easier..hope you continue to watch.

Hi, TJ, (have I got that right?) yes, these are expensive especially when you add all the option packs, but for the most part they hold a good residual value on the second hand market. the cost varies according to which model and which options you choose...It took me a long time to sum up the courage to buy one of these, but I have never regretted it. Real track goes the same way but has washers and nutz x2.

I heard some german guy was producing these tracks in steel, for about 3500€ , that would be something to see

A question to the experts! I just can't get over this being a 1/6 scale. I have a good or bad habit when I watch interesting parts of scale models, to do quick up scaling in my head to get a feel of the size of the real part, and normally it all seem to make sense. But in this case, take for example the width of the tracks. I guesstimate them being around 20cm or 8" wide. That becomes 120 cm or 48" wide tracks! That doesn't seem possible. Same with those wheels. Hard to tell but i guess around 15cm or 6" in diameter which becomes 90cm or 36"!! Holy sh*t this thank has to be a monster! I know nothing about it but I don't think I've ever seen a tank with almost 50" wide tracks.. What am I doing wrong? I mean the only thing I can't think of is if his hands are much smaller than I estimates them to be? By the way, since the expert you is already here, Are there different camps wheater you build you tank in Aluminium or steel? I could imagine a scenario kinda like when talking abot 5.56 vs 7,62, AK vs Ar.. Or is that not something people care about? Do they sell large kits like this in steel as well? First I assumed that the steel tank would be much more expensive considering it might be harder to construct, but Aluminium must be a much more expensive metal, so perhaps it's cheaper, what's the cost ratio between steel and aluminium these days? If two identical models were built, one with each metal, how much heavier would the steel one be? More than double right? What about price ratio? Thanks !

Hi Erik, thank you for watching and commenting...let me ry and answer some of your questions...The tracks are approx 100mm wide. The wheels are approx 110mm in Diameter. The tank in overall length is approx 1500mm. For the most part the kit is made from aluminium as I guess this helps with cutting down the weight and cost but there are also a lot of cast pieces, so aluminium lends itself better for this purpose. I would not want to guess how much a steel one would weigh. hope this helps, best regards...Tony

Why did they not use c-clip instead for bloody split pins ? Would be much neater and if you need to replace a link for what ever reason , it will be a blast ( hey you pay enough for that toy ) 🙄🙄🤦‍♂🤦‍♂

I understand that the earlier kits had something similar to a 'C' clip but the amount of friction and stress the tracks undergo when driving these heavy models warranted a secondary method of securing the pin. You are right in that these are not cheap kits but for the most part this is reflected in the quality of the materials. I hope you continue watching and thanks again for your comment.

Yes unfortunately these are expensive, but they do hold a good residual value on the second hand market. Armortek do also offer a range of payment plans to help with the cost. Thanks for watching and I hope you continue to follow my build.
