(1/3) TBS Crossfire Series: Overview and Introduction

In the video I'm using version XF TX BETA v2.08 on the module. Betaflight 3.2RC5 and OpenTX 2.2.
"The TBS CROSSFIRE is a long range R/C link based on the newest RF technology, capable of self-healing two-way communications and range beyond comprehension. With a sensitivity of -130dB, full RF-side diversity, tiny receivers for FPV quads, the TBS CROSSFIRE contains the most modern technology to provide a superior long range control link."

    Thanks for the review of this product! A long range R/C link explains a good bit about what happened recently... ...I was testing all the features of a brand new DJI craft, and I flipped the RTH switch to test that function. The last time I saw the dang thing, it was headed back to CHINA!

    Those with problems on windows 10 mission planner connection, but ok with smartphone and tablet read the following : After pairing the Bluetooth successfully, in the W10 BT screen, click "more Bluetooth options" then "COM ports". Delete both incoming and outgoing about the crossfire then click add and select outgoing on the Crossfire then OK. You will end up with a single com port for it, open mission planner and connect, should work. I will make a video tomorrow

    Hi +Painless360, I always love the high quality of your videos, great work! I have a small addition to your Crossfire antenna recommendation: to actually make full use of the diversity receiver, the two antennas need to be positioned 90 degrees apart, one preferably lying flat as does the TX antenna. This way the theoretical signal loss is only sin(PI/4), which is about 0.7 times the full signal strength. If you have the two antennas placed like you have in the video, not only is the signal strength low to start with (since you have them vertical and the radio antenna horizontal), but will a rotation of your aircraft not benefit of the dual antenna setup. Anyways, looking forward to part 2!

  • @Painless360

    @Painless360

    Thanks for the comment. I am planning to spend more time on it in the next video as 90 degree gives better signal quality as you move the craft but lessens max range. Thanks again for the post! :D

  • @JeroenBrosens

    @JeroenBrosens

    Interesting to know what makes you think that. This doesn't extend your range - that's affected by antenna gain (and to a certain degree transmitting power). Two identical parallel antennas perform precisely the same as one: if you bank your aircraft *both* signals drop, whereas in a properly placed 90 degree setup, there will always be one antenna that is oriented towards your transmitter more optimal than the other. You will also get a noticable improvement in range when you use a directional antenna on your transmitter, but then you'll have to keep facing your aircraft. Do you fly long range FPV? The Crossfire is a very good system to do so, but then longe range video also becomes a thing (diversity the other way round!). Keep it up!

    Charles R Taylor not sure why? ;) I talked a little about this in the second 'answers' video. For longer range you need to use 2.4 or 1.3 Gigahertz FPV with a good directional antenna and as much power as is legal in your area. When the FPV blue stuff gets a little cheaper, that might be worth a look too. Happy flying!

I have a question... say i have the 'full' size crossfire tx (2Watt) and i plug it into my dji fpv remote (into the 3.5mm ppm output jack) is it possible to get telemetry from the aircraft back to the crossfire tx ? My aim is to use the crossfire module with the dji remote ( to get the benefits of a good/solid long range radio link that is better than dji) but also get telemetry back to the crossfire tx ( which i can connect to an android tablet via bluetooth and then plot the position of the drone on a map on a using Telemetry viewer app).

    As a newcomer to Quad flying and reading up on everything, I've seen a lot of reference to Crossfire and so came here as a first stop for detailed info. However, do the new VLOS laws now in place make crossfire redundant? I'm getting on a bit now so my eyesight's not what it used to be but surely there aren't many pilots who can see a drone more than a mile away with naked eyes? Assuming I'm going to stay within the bounds of the new laws, what value does crossfire offer?

And; 2) Can you still receive telemetry when you run SBUS, or can you only receive LQ through CRSF? ??? Thanks in advance! Those are quick ones - 1) |The whole point of CRSF is that's it's bi-directional and very fast. You need that to 'talk' to the module for setup from the LUA script.. S-Bus is only used at the far end to talk to non CRSF enabled flight controllers. 2) see the answer on the other comment you posted :D

Will the Taranis control the Core, i.e. if using the quads OSD to change settings the video Tx is locked on 25mW unless a call-sign is displayed then you're able to increase video power, however if changing via Taranis crossfire.lua it allows you to increase video Tx setting whether call-sign is shown or not?Also what is the device.lua in the Crossfire folder? CRSF as a bidirectional telemetry connection will allow you to control anything at the far end with the right LUA script and that support is expected in Betaflight in 3.3. If you're having a problem then I'd recommend having a quick look in the forum or raising a ticket with TBS for help. I'll add this to the list of things to talk about in a future video.

    MAVLink was one of the initial development goals/uses for this system. You can configure two of the pins on the Crossfire Rx to be MAVlink TX and MAVlink Rx and then connect those to the port on the flight controller sending the MAVlink telemetry. Then you can share that MAVlink data using Bluetooth with any device (only on the full size Crossfire TX module). Then you can connect to it with your device running Mission Planner/QGroundControl using that BT link and have all of your MAVLink telemetry and control over KM of range.. :D I'll cover this in the third video in the series..

    You shouldn't need to. The Crossfire scripts have been a standard part of the SD card contents for some time... best of luck

    +Chris Harris I'm not sure it's worth doing entire review just to help with one problem ;) What have you tried? And what is the actual problem you're having?

    I had that problem before. The button on the back of the Micro TX is very finicky about how long you press it. You need to press it once very quickly, then power on the RX. It should be in bind mode. If the light in the TX is blue the firmware on the RX needs to be updated. Just. Press the button again, very quickly and it will start the process of binding and updating. Hope that helps. It was driving me mad at 1st! If you press the button even a split second longer on the micro tx, it won't enter bind mode

    +Ruben Hartmann last time I spoke to the TBS guys, they were looking for volunteers to test it. I don't have that radio here so I've not been able to try either. Might be worth a check in the documentation to see what the latest updates are. Best of luck!

    Painless360 I think it is bound because if I then turn off the crossfire tx the green light stops flashing

    Wait, So if I pick the wrong region I can't use 2000mw power? And what frequency is better 868 or 915mhz? What is the micro v2 rx stock antenna tuned to? You're scaring me.😯 I thought the only difference in region was the mhz.

    US=915, EU=868 MHz. The antennas are probably tuned to none of these exactly, but somewhere inbetween.

    The control of a model is exactly the same with Crossfire as with any other system. I personally prefer the TBS, Immersion TRAMP HV or the HolyBro Atlatl HV smart VTX units that can be configured from the Betaflight OSD..
