This has probably already been pointed out, but the "dents" on the side of the hull are known in the Navy as "dishing," which typically occurs when some junior officer "bumps" the ship into a pier or a bollard or something (or harbor tugs and other light watercraft "kiss" the hull). Of course, once the JO dings the ship he'll receive a chewing out from the executive officer and the more senior ship drivers, but don't ask me how I know that. ;-) Also, I was stationed in Hawaii, in 1998, when the Mighty Mo was towed across from the mothball fleet and tied up at its final berth over on Pearl Harbor's Ford Island. I and many others -- from all the military service branches, not just the Navy and Marine Corps (battleships once had a sizable Marine contingent on board) -- not to mention plenty of Americans from all walks of civilian life -- helped restore it to its former glory. The Iowa-class BBs were the height of U.S. non-aviation-related naval military technology for decades and through several refits as some of them were taken out of mothballs and then put back into active service. They're brutal war machines and not at all hesitant to display their mailed fists, and I say that admiringly.

That's insane - first of all the scale - hell, the turrets could pass for 1/35 scale tank turrets, but also the stupid amount of details - and on top of that, you decide to top it off with even more aftermarket parts! It's mind-boggling and I admire your geist in getting this done. Me, I'm keeping to my 1/35 scale tanks and stuff. But I will follow this build with interest.

I used to simulate tin canning on the haul just by painting panels with masking and airbrush. 1/200 scale is large enough to make it truly 3D into the plastic which I never have seen personally. If I had that model you profiled I would end up spending 3 years on it.

Trumpeter ships plans are vague to say the least. Especially on bonus type parts or extra details so to speak. Great kits. As far as the left over parts are concerned. According to modeling shows, it's assumed the modeler would do extensive studies for detailing purposes and not just slapping together a $300 model. Some modelers put a massive amount of zeal into their builds where others just model to pass time. Thanks for giving us a chance at viewing to details of this great kit.:-)

That kit looks amazing! I've been eyeing off a similar giant-scale (as I call them) kit, at my local hobby store. I've built a mountain of model kits, but I've never built anything so huge and so detailed. The kits cost a few hundred dollars, here in Australia. When I eventually get around to buying a 1:200 scale kit, it will either be a ship, like that one, or there's also a submarine kit that has a cut-away side, showing interior detail. Both are around AU$500, just for the kit.

I spend a lot of time looking at the assembled hull (I've been working on it) and it is absolutely ridiculous how big it is. Get out a tape measure and lay out something that's 53 1/4 inches long and 8 inches wide. You'll see exactly what I mean. Someday, if I ever decide to move out of this house..... the ship will probably be included in the sale ; )

Yeah man..... I'm thinking about getting some kind of rail system that will allow me to "roll" the camera along next to the ship. Right now I have to stand about 5 feet away from the model to get it to fit in the frame. And at that distance you can't see anything other than it is huge. But, I think its gonna have a lot of cool "areas" loaded with detail that I'll focus on from one episode to another.

Enjoy these type of videos a lot, sort of living out my old model building days through these have developed issues with chemical smells and i react heavily to the standard types of glues and paint these days, so i am sort of stuck at just looking at others building and i have to say the level of skill a lot of these people have, i am amazed and feel ashamed for the poor models i made in comparison, from i was i think 10 and until i was 21 i built a lot of model planes and helicopters and tanks, however one horrible party my sister had held i went from 52 models down to 12 complete models because drunk people and their tendency to think goes to zero, so i had a room full of empty shelves and a lot of pieces to pick up after that, and it kind of killed my interest in doing more back then and now with allergies and chemical sensitivity i am sort of unable to get back into it now that i have the time and money for it again.

Nice kit. Just to confirm. On US naval ships they go by Ladders. No stairs.

Got the Tamiya kit as a first anniversary gift for my late wife 20 years ago. Belonged to a modeling group and found it at a swap meet the group was at. Not being a ship guy a few guys asked why and after I explained it was an anniversary gift a few of the older guys started to speak up to save the newlywed guy from committing a horrible marital faux paux and ending up with a couple nights on the couch. Seeing what was coming I spoke up and said no guys she asked me for this kit if I ever found it. Those older fellows faces went from "we have to save this poor fellow" to "you bastard how did you find THE ONE".

@@TheMidwestModelShop sounds like we both married waaaay out of our class. 😁. Our biggest bone of contention was shelf space and work bench sharing.

@@garysprandel1817 No joke, in our new house, I immediately had to build her a large bench to put up next to mine. That for her to paint bird houses and work on her doll house. There is a SEPARATE ROOM exclusively for scrap books. I don't do any of those things. My bench is at least the same size as hers, fortunately. Yeah, I love it! But in fairness, I have a separate workshop thats all mine so... I guess its all fair! LOL! Good woman are a blessing for sure. I'm glad I finally found one.
