I adore this variation, how the choreography shows Siegfried's introspection and feeling of loneliness. Nureyev brings depth to the role, stretching out his line and turning and spiralling with such grace and languor, revealing Siegfried's inner turmoil. what a beautiful performance.

I just saw your comment and you are absolutely right. I saw an interview of Nureyev talking about this piece and what his motivation was for this dance. He was not only a GREAT dancer, he was a true artist. When you say you don't feel like you are watching a ballet... it is bigger than that - you've found the joy of watching Nureyev! He was not always "technically perfect" - but what he gave instead was always so much more.

Lots of comments about technique. I feel only dancers are obsessed with technical skills not the audience, not regular people who go to see ballet because they want to see something beautiful and to be moved. I've seen Swan Lake live before, I've seen ballet, but honestly, found it a bit boring by the end. I believe I only saw technique. This! This is captivating, these few minutes move me from tears to smiling and I almost watch with my mouth open. He is so expressive, he makes me feel, a true artist, a true dancer! Any expression of art needs to contain heart and soul and spirit, something beautifully alive and raw that touches the heart and soul and spirit of the one who consumes it. Technique = foundation True artist = how you use it to capture your audience.

Technique is indispensable in Dance, but without expressivity, Art is incomplete. Rudolf Nureyev had that in Him, took the time to live His characters. Emotion is shared, thanks to what comes out of oneself. He had a unique grace, from head to toe. You have to know that this solo was created by Him. He had to fight to impose it. His gestures are slow, which makes the Dance very difficult, everything is supple, untied. The Prince is sad at this moment of the Ballet. He communicates this sadness. He often said to his pupils: «... Be graceful, right down to your fingertips.» He didn't care if a Dancer could raise his leg above his head. If there was no emotion, the performance was worthless to him. Dame Margot Fonteyn had the same point of view, which is why their duets were extraordinary. To take the time to do every gesture, with accuracy, feeling the music, was their way of being. Thank you, Master. These memories are priceless.

I guess the argument here about masculine and feminine boils down to this. As great as Nureyev was, he does have a soft femininity to him and when compared to, say, Baryshnikov, there is such a striking difference. Baryshnikov comes off fierce, muscular, athletic and manly. Nureyev to me has the beauty, lines and grace. It's really not one better than the other, it is just a huge contrast in styles, to my amateur eye, anyway.

By definition, anything a male does is masculine, and anything a female does is feminine. It makes sense to allude to qualities like forcefulness, tenderness, vigor, fluidity, etc. These are all human qualities, which each human (and therefore each artist) can express in varying proportions. To divide them into neat little piles and define one as "masculine" and one as "feminine" limits the artistic range of the performer. I have even seen such strictures imposed on, and used to criticize the works of, writers and visual artists (to be sure, I've lived a long time). It's not something we should go back to.

Nureyev makes feel the dance though. It's rare that I want to see a ballet dancers face but for him, you are captivated by the entire body and then you feel it as well. Its a rare gift that he had.
