£1,000 Pro Vs £400 Standard - ML3 Traditional Shootout
Музыка
The Chapman ML3 is a guitar that is dear to my heart.
Following on from the original ML3RC the new Pro Traditional and Standard Traditional guitars retain all the old school features, but add a little twist in a few different ways.
Are you a P90 player, or more of a trad single coil person, who wins? only you can decide.

Thanks so much dude 👍
The ml3 pro traditional with P90's...... in my personal opinion is one of the best variations of the Ml3 I've owned over the years. I've got my old Traditional rigged up with a tap-able hot rail in the bridge which is sort of my do all guitar... but the P90 semi hollow is a sleeper. Easily my favorite playing guitar and that's comparing it to my Gibson SG Standard. I think the only thing I would do to my pro model is change out the saddles for brass ones . But the current pro range is some of the best stuff I have seen from Chapman yet!
I like the standard traditional and will be buying one next week. I’m looking for simplicity, tone, playability and cost. I’ve never had a P90 and usually swap out pickups but this time, I’m gonna roll with what y’all created. The middle position sounds rich and full. Well done!!
I'll go with the latter but I might be biased because I own one 😊 The smooth rolled neck, gorgeous top and a P90 pickup really bring it home. Bought it for the looks, specs (Eddie Vedder fan) and Chapman reputation.

Appreciate you bro
Got a brass nut and bridge saddles on my late 70's Washburn Falcon. Now that is a lovely guitar.

Don't they fall off in the cold?
Rob! Please tell the guys at Thomann to stock the new ML3 thinline pro classics. They're the only store I can order from, and I badly want one!
Hi Rob, great video! I wondered if you could answer a question about the standard. Is the neck comfy to play or is it a different kind of shape that would take a while to get used to?
I genuinly think Chapman's offer the best bang for buck on the market right now. They have done for years. Personally, I think the Standard bats way above its league, but the Pro is more my vibe!
Still got my RC. Only electric guitar I own and I love it. Drilled massive holes in it, but it's still pretty. :) Would love to get myself maple board tele one day, but that's quite a way off. Thanks for making my guitar Rob!
Both! 🤣 They are two incredible guitars. Great job Rob and Chapman company! PS: I prefer the Pro, it has more gain, versatility and finishes. I love it! Happy holidays to all!
The hip shot open gear locking tuners are the best (hence why the 3 Pros I use live and in the studio are never a worry--they hold their tuning and string changes are a breeze). Both are the top of the line for their respective price ranges; LOVE YOUUUU!?!?!?! Now I’m thinking of adding a Pro Ghost Fret…
I really prefer the pro but purely because that bridge pickup is just sublime! If I'd spent my money on a standard though I feel I wouldn't be disappointed.
Jesus, the Standard Traditional looks and sounds amazing for 400 quid, bravo sir!

Thank you kindly sir 🤘🏽
The Traditional does it for me! Kudos & Congrats for making a great guitar that does not break the bank $.
I own a Pro snd used to own the Standard. Both brilliant, neck nicer with much better rolled edges but the pickups in the Pro can do everything! But both guitars I say!
Love all the guitars… will you consider making non-reversed headstocks for these models?
Does anyone remember the ML3 RC? haha of course. I have a Korean ml1 from that era :D Enjoyed the vid, these T types look awesome. I might lower the neck pickup to see what I get, nice tip :D people complain about the two pickups changing volumes hahaha
Just recently picked up a ML1 Pro Hybrid. Now I think it’s time to pick up a ML3 Pro Traditional. In my opinion it’s worth going for the Pro range.
I have been wanting a ml3 pro for so long… and it wins on so many levels. As setup it is a classic rival to any Fender T Type in production. You would spend 3 times the $$ at Fender for a T setup like this. You could remove the locking tuners, take away the roast on the neck and it would still be the better sounding instrument significantly. Please don’t discontinue the ml3 pro… it is the best guitar you guys have produced. I will own one… i just need a bit more time.

Fear not weary axe bearer, for I happen to have read that the ML3 is Chapman's most selling and most positively received guitar, they would have no business to discontinue
Both sound great and look beautiful. Personally prefer the workhorses grit as an attitude.
Fair play, not lickin arse here, but I prefer the pro to my USA fender Tele. Just my opinion. Great guitars.
Loving those Hot Tele pick ups- But the maple neck has me big time alongside a P90 what's not to love?
I have the ML3 Traditional Standard in Radiant Stream. Is my favourite guitar despite being the cheapest I own. Better frets, neck, nut, fretboard with rolled edges.( My usa strat, mexican deluxe strat, mexican player telecaster all have non rolled fretboards and in places sharp fret ends. I could sell my Fenders now as dont really play them). I like the flat top of the standard ML3 and the colours of the ash veneer on the standard compared to the Pro ML3 and the more vintage sound.
I've made my mind up before it's even started. The silver pro traditional is a phenomenal looking guitar! If I change my mind I'll edit this comment. *edit* Both sound great but I'm still in love with that silver beast!
I love those Chapman pro guitars, I especially love the look of the semi hollow with the neck P90. I just really wish that they had full fret dots. I have a guitar with no fret dots, and for my standard, I find it harder to play than my guitars with full fret dots. That is the reason why I'd lean more towards the Traditional, although I like the contouring on the Pro version more and I love Hipshot tuners
I feel the ML3 has the best design of all the Chapmans (although I really like the lefty V they used to have). The carved Tele design is gorgeous.
I think one of the only things that has stopped me from getting a Chapman Pro model is not having fret markers. I never seem to use side dots and much prefer fretboard markings.
The silver finished can easily get my money for real.
I've got an ML3 modern with a storm burl top with seymour duncan pegasus and Sentient pickups. I can't see how a pro version would be any better apart from locking tuners.
I have a lot of guitars and I really struggle to hear a difference sometimes. On your demo there, the guitars sound so similar I’d have to go for the less expensive as I don’t feel that the Pro offers enough to be financially sound. I’d have said you’d need to have something extra, like a hard case, to make me want that one.
I'd love to know IF the MLV will ever make a comeback. I've seen Rob play it live with Dorje in 2017 and it looked awesome (though I don't like floating trems xD)
Hey Rob! I’d love to get a black pro traditional with the gold hardware. I’ve contacted Chapman support and the Chapman guitar instagram and can’t get an answer from anyone. Are there any available in the Uk? Thanks!
Honestly I think both sound great but I like the angry Mule p90 sound a bit better.
I’m partial to anything with a P90. Can I suggest micing or DI-ing the amp for these reviews?

Yeah man, sometimes I like the “In the room sound”…. It’s more real than an isolated mic
A P90 Neck and Tele Bridge Combo just seems like the best thing to ever happen to electric guitar

That's a fact my man. I hated fenders for way too long. I could have been playing an amazing tele for years, but my bias stopped me from playing the one guitar to rule them all. I've since rectified that problem.
Standard got my vote 🤘🏻
I would say these are different tools for different work. Both of them sounding very well and they have their own character. I think a guitar is more than the amount of pieces, the big difference is in the right combination of parts and their determination. That's why most guitar players have more than one guitar. I think both guitars are great, there is no better or worse. Some months ago I discovered an old Baby Z from Dean Guitars in a guitar store and after playing it, it was clear that I need this old guitar. Not because it was expensive or cheap, it just has a good playability and an extreme sustain and it is still just fun to play this guitar. A high quality is good and I like it, but it's not everything. I use my ml1 baritone for nearly everything, my Ghostfret in standard D or in drop C for rock and metal... At the moment I have 7 guitars and some more guitars are on my list, because they have a special character and wonderful sounds and they are inspiring me. 😊
I hate to be that person but I’d really like a trem on those. Otherwise, both are awesome.
I'm voting standard, love the wood grain on the top 😍
Just bought a ML3 Pro trad, lovin' it. ...if there was a 1 pickup option, like an Esquire, i might trade my ML3 for that, just sayin' 😉
I bought and returned an ml3 pro trad a year ago. Gorgeous, played great, had the best middle tone I’ve ever heard in any guitar. BUT. It had the worst neck dive I’ve ever experienced. That was the deal breaker for me. Super light body and heavy neck…
I vote for the pro and I dub it Sir Galahad The Brave. Just as prepared to slay dragons as it is to lullaby princesses. It may be hard and cold on the surface, but deep down it is warm and gentle. I have spoken.
Hypothetically which guitar would Steve Cropper, my favorite guitarist, pick?😅
I have both of these guitars. Each has its pros and cons: ML3 P90 pros: - More rounded neck compared to the PRO - Nice sounding pickup at the bridge - Traditional flat body with belly cut & armrest ML3 P90 cons: - weight - I stopped liking the P90 pickup when I bought the Yamaha Revstar RSS02T. ML3 PRO pros: - Roasted maple neck - stainless steel frets - Carved top body - Potentiometers and switches are set lower in relation to the bridge and strings. ML3 PRO cons: - The potentiometers and switch stopped creaking after 18 months. Cleaning did not help ML3 P90 & PRO pros: - easy access to high frets - nice sound - nice look ML3 P90 & PRO cons: - The VOLUME potentiometer is too close to the switch. I changed the barrel to TOP HAT and it helped. - The 2nd string tree is too close to the neck adjustment hole. It requires you to unscrew the string tree whenever you need to adjust it.
Weird explosion you got there. Is it constipated?
First! I have been dying to play Chapman for years but still haven't had the oportunity. Where in Harrisburg, PA can I find a dealer that sells them?

Oh yeah ha ha ha!!!!!
Sales would rise if you flip those headstocks.
I think a lot of people buy with their eyes not their ears and the Standard looks awesome. Personally, I HATE carved tops on teles. If the Pro had the body of the Standard it would almost be the perfect guitar.
Play something nice. I like Sugar Sugar by The Archies.
Cheap one. I think with an EQ pedal and a treble bleed it can equal the sound of the more expensive model.
