08-12 Chevy Malibu Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Replacement

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I began experiencing issues with intermittent air conditioning and noticed that the engine temperature gauge went to 0 when this happened. After initial fears that my car was overheating, I was became annoyed that I didn't have AC. Replacing this sensor should provide the car with accurate readings and prevent it from shutting the AC compressor off.

FIRST: Try disconnecting the battery, waiting 60 seconds, then reconnecting it. If problem is still there, continue with replacement. Had the same issue, gauge dropped to cold, AC stopped working, but still ran fine. I replaced the CTS first before checking the battery, turned the car on and the gauge was still not working. It wasn’t until after I reset the batter it went back to normal. Hope this helps.

old post, but maybe this will help someone who searches later on this. I started having the same issue with the temp gauge dropping to 0 intermittently and throwing the code p0128 for the Coolant Temp Sensor and A/C blowing hot. When code is cleared it will function properly for a random number of days. Replacing thermostat and CTS/ECT did not solve the issue. But during the last couple of months of troubleshooting the CTS another issue emerged. The brake light will stay on even when pedal isn't depressed and when it is depressed the brake lights go off. Cruise control will not work when experiencing this and will randomly throw ESC(stability control)and TCS(traction control system) All of this can ultimately be traced back to the TSB #08-05-22-009C (Intermittent Brake Lights) The issue is High Resistance due to "fretting corrosion" in the BCM C2 or X2. Final solution is to apply dielectric grease to the C2 connections on the BCM. Hopefully this helps someone so they don't have to deal with the frustration and throwing random parts at it and hoping for a solution

Yes, it was the same with mine where it become frequent and ended up stuck permanently at zero. This caused my radiator fans to run at max rpms and a/c clutch didnt seem to be engaging. Replaced the ecs and thermostat together, the thermostat since most users in the forums I read mentioned that just replacing the ecs alone didn't fix it(the old thermostat did look in good condition but Im no mechanic, plus didnt want to make another trip to the spare parts shop). Works fine now!! You can reach the ecs by removing the radiator coolant reservoir (2 bolts), which will give you some wiggle room🙂✌

On my 2008 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ, the A/C does not blow cold air and the engine temperature gauge is always at the bottom (on C) whenever I run the car... But two weeks ago the A/C spontaneously started working and blowing very cold air, which only lasted for three days. Then the A/C stopped blowing cold air again, and the engine temperature gauge is still at the bottom. My check engine light is also on and I'm getting a reading to change the fuel tank pressure sensor... Do you think I may have the same problem as you were experiencing?

  • @MichaelReuter

Daniel Wahl It probably only took a minute or two but it was suctioned on there so tight I did a lot of checking to make sure I wasn’t missing something else. I don’t think it’s worth the hassle to drain the coolant as long as you have the new sensor ready and can swap it quickly. Not much is going to leak out in a few seconds.

A couple months ago I started having same problem. Temp gauge went down to cold, a/c stopped working, and check engine light came on. Replaced the ECT sensor and issue still remained. Hmm maybe thermostat? Had the thermostat replaced as well and when I cleared the check engine light the gauge immediately jumped and read temperature. That only lasted a day then gauge went back down. I though it had to be the wiring to the temperature sensor checked it and all good. Cleared the check engine light and again gauge immediately reads temperature again. But it only lasts a day at the most before the problems happens again. Any ideas what else I can try? I want to avoid dealer at all costs.

I just recently bought a 2010 Chevy impala LT. Drove it for about 2 days then engine hot ac off came on. Replaced temperature sensor didn't fix the problem. Next day replaced thermostat and refilled and bleed system good. Still nothing scratched my head for awhile. I unplugged the harness for tempature sensor plugged in the old sensor. Touched the old sensor on the warm engine while running. Fans shut off and engine hot ac off went away. Was able to use air conditioning. So I'm assuming I got a faulty sensor. This will at least tell you if your wiring is messed up or you have a faulty sensor. Also was able to erase code that was permanently stored. Going to replace sensor again in the morning. To see if that fixes it all the way. Also dont forget to disconnect negative when you replace sensor or thermostat. Any questions feel free to send an email. Twistedclown79@gmail.com
