I have had taken my VW TDI Beetles to Richard on several occasions. I won't take them anywhere else. Richard is honest and his shop does awesome work. I can't recommend it highly enough. I just discovered his videos. Thank you for posting them. Really, if you can possibly take your VW to Richard you would be a darn fool not do. I'm the guy from Alaska with two '06 Beetles.

Great to see this in contrast to dealerships that just fire the parts cannon at the problem. My friend had a similar error code, and after the dealership replaced the turbo to no avail and to great cost, we found a small vacuum leak in a t-piece. It took all of 5 minutes. Apparently the dealership hadn't even checked for vacuum leaks. I also replaced the actuator in my car with the turbo in-situ (2.0 CBAB) in about an hour, but i had to use a couple of special tools to be able to reach a couple of the bolts. I was lucky the bolts were not stuck though. Awesome video as always

I noticed that rattling in the sound and recording when you took that top cover off the engine the rattling seemed to go away a little in the sound

Excellent video! I always learn a lot from your expertise and videos. I also have a 2006 VW Jetta TDI BRM that I replaced the Turbo Boost Actuator myself. Major PITA! Told I should also have the Turbo rebuilt. 346,000 miles on the odometer and runs good. Question: Can the turbo be removed from the top of the car exclusively or does it also require removing the axle and other components from below? How did Courtland take it out? Thanks.

We go from the bottom because we have a lift. Its personal preference really but you'll have to do a bunch of work from the bottom anyway.

Just donated to KansasCityTDI. Excellent videos . Why wouldn't I donate 10 bucks when I can save myself 1000-3000. bucks in repair. I have a 2006MK5 Jetta TDI with 375k miles. A real beauty. I was a sucker and let dealer replace first turbo when it went at 275k miles . Saved the core and going to rebuild it myself. For a KKK, any ideas where I can get a rebuild kit and plus also a new actuator. Love the videos , keep them coming. Mark

OH SNAP! Coming back to this video as my P0299 code came back today and the car went into limp mode, only the fifth time it's ever done it and has been six or seven months since last time. I've seent this video several times, along with several other of your videos. Wasn't until just now that I realized who you are lol. I don't know you, persay, but I certainly know who you are as your reputation proceeds you in KC as the VW diesel dude. So the last time I went chasing this, I took your advice and hooked a vacuum pump up to teh nipple on the turbo vane controller and the rod moved when I applied vacuum. Tonight, I did the same thing and it's not moving anymore with vacuum applied to the vacuum port... I'm guessing its failed and the PCM can't regulate boost now? The confusing thing is, I just took the car for a rip and after several pulls, it never made more than 16.5psi of boost. I assume without boost control, even these tiny little turbos can exceed the PCM's limit on a stock tune?? Or am I missing something here? Thanks!

Sounds like your telling me your vanes are stuck. If the actuator doesn't move with vacuum, and the vacuum isn't leaking then something is stuck. Maybe if your lucky just the actuator is stuck. I have a video on a older tdi where the vanes are stuck. Look at that one.

@@CoolAirVw Well... my worry is, when I apply vacuum to the port via a hand pump, it never builds any vacuum at all. The hand pump makes too much noise to hear if there's any leaks on the actuator diaphragm. If this were the case, and the actuator has a vacuum leak, wouldn't it theoretically overboost regularly? I did try to hook something on the lever on the turbo and pull up, but the only thing I have strong enough to get down around the bottom of the rod is physically too large for the small area between the actuator and cylinder head / valve cover.. Maybe I'll try and hook a stiff wire around and try again.

@@elesjuan If the vacuum pump isn't building vacuum then your problem could be bad actuator (ruptured diaphragm). Cap off your hand vacuum pump and pump it to see if it builds vacuum without the actuator. Then do it again hooked to the actuator. Just trying confidently determine that the actuator has a vacuum leak.

This owner of the car in this video wrecked the car, I bought it and fixed it then I sold it, and now that person brings me the car.

i will forward your video to my mechanic. hope he will do more testing before he decides to replace the turbo. if he decides it is the turbo where would you suggest buying a new turbo or a turbo rebuild kit? or do you have one for sale for a 2006 VW jetta TDI??

I got one for you. '05 TDI manual trans. I'm getting a p0299 code. However, the boost will work fine most of the time. When I'm in a high gear (manual) and rpms are just above 2k the boost will give out and I lose all power. I can turn the car off and start it again and boost will work again.

I have lots of videos on p0299 code. do the tests in those videos. Can be vacuum problem, boost leaks or vanes in turbo stuck.

Hi. Very helpful videos 👍. I have a similar issue on a VW T5 2.5tdi BPC Y2007. It tends to fail when cruising on autopilot and slightly up hill. Every other part has been inspected. Any other part (turbo, valve, hoses, vacuum tank) is flawless. The last part that needs verification is the vacuum pump. Have you a similar issue on other VW ? Best Regards JJ

vacuum pumps have been know to put out less than normal vacuum. Very easy to test for.

Excellent video as always. Where do you get the actuator? I have 350k on my TDI. I wasn't so luck on my first turbo. Dealer replaced whole think for 3k. Ugh

Hi, when you're using the hand held pump is it putting pressure into the actuator or is it sucking to create vaccum? Please correct me if I am wrong but I've always thought that the actuator rod moves because of a pushing pressure and not a sucking (vaccum pressure). Thank you.

In this video it is sucking. The "wastegate' actuator on 96 and 97 tdi's were activated with pressure. Most other tdi's ALH and newer there is no "wastegate" it is a variable geometry turbo and the actuator runs off vacuum.

Thank you so much for your reply. My 2007 audi a4 2.0L turbo quattro is having a P0299 code. Car has very little power when stepping on gas pedal. I have replaced, fuel filter, N75 and diverter valve and still problem. Just to test i have disconnected the hose from N75 to wastegate actuator. I was expecting some good boost or overboost. But car still lacks power. From my understanding is that if there's no pressure applied to actuator then the wastegate flapper should be closed and I should be over boosting. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

great videos! I have a question, wish you could help me. my n75 is not working properly. The reading of my BEW tdi vacuum pump 3mm main line is 22'' of vacuum. when I block the line going to the booster the vaccum goes to 28-30''' is this normal ?

no, that probably means there is a leak, but it should work with 22 inches of vacuum. Check at the n75 and if you have 22 inches that is probably ok.

@@CoolAirVw Thank you for your help, I have not been able to take to a vagcom. But I tested the n75 with a vacuum gauge and have 20'' reading in idle. When I push the pedal the vaccum moves very little about 1 or 2'' and then at 2800-3000 rpms the gauge moves violently to 0. So if 22'' at the pump is acceptable it has to be the n75 right ? Thanks again.

So did this car also have an issue with the DMF as well or were you showing what it should sound like? I’m a New tdi owner and I’m having this same issue, makes a whoosh sound at low rpm and low boost till 3k rpm or so and then it opens up.
