The look on Kevin’s face when Frank walked casually over and started it first prod..priceless! I wonder what he was thinking! Another beautiful bike saved by the intrepid duo!! 👍👍

Well Done Lads! So the mixed up leads off the ign stator plate to the black box was the culprit. Makes sense to what you were seeing...very occasional pops and puffs out the back end. You mentioned centerstand deploying when revving engine...don't forget to address that before considering a test ride!

Secret Norton handshake ! LOL

Well done. I bought an ex army 250 Triumph Trophy years ago. This was before I knew how to circuit test. Anyway, I rebuilt it. Kicked it over… nothing, no spark. So replaced the plugs. Then the leads, then the coils, then the battery…. Like I said, this was before I knew how to test electrics 🙄. New condenser… nothing. I’d already fitted new points……. Bought some new points again and then…… discovered…… I’d put the points lead on the wrong side of a fibre washer!!!! Moved the washer, bike started first kick 😡🙄😊

Ahem, I think I might have mentioned switching the leads earlier….just saying! I know switching the leads seems like it shouldn’t make a difference but it does. I think you’re being too hard on yourself, it wasn’t stupid, just part of the learning process. Well done and thanks for sharing!

Turns out that if the Black/White and Black/Yellow wires from the mag pickup to the black box are swapped, the black box computes the advance curve backwards. So instead of advancing the spark it retards it. I wish I had paid attention to your earlier advice. Thanks and Ride Safe!

It sounds really good. Finding there was a definite reason the bike wouldn’t fire, clears that mystery up, irrespective of who or when. As far as the 2 oil leaks, these things happen on strip downs & rebuilds, that what shakedowns & road testing highlight. So overall a good job done.

Congratulations! That is one great looking bike with a lot of fans rooting for her. Great job Frank and Kevin running all the traps, and then some, to get it running after the secret Norton handshake. Will the bike get a seat? Will the bike start again for the test ride? Will the bike pass the test ride? Will we see more oil leaks? The saga continues . . .

Good work guys! So glad you got it sorted out! Mistakes happen, I've made similar boo-boos myself!

Have to admit, I did laugh when your first kick got it running. It either doesn’t like Kevin or needs a very specific touch to want to play. Well done on it finally firing up.

I think Frank sprayed some Lysol in the carbs and told Kevin it was starter fluid. A little friendly sabotage. Then when he went to start it a while later it fired right up. : )

That rear fairing/fender looks loose?
@fjdelmonte
21 күн бұрын
Yes. Good observation. The first Commando frame had a week rear section and was prone to breaking, especially if the owner mounted any type of saddle bags. The frame was strengthened in 1973 for both the 750 and 850.

There will usually be shaking of the tail section/mudguard while bike is running/idling. The camera can make it look a lot worse due to camera frame/refresh rate coinciding near the shaking rate.

Really glad you got it running mistakes like the oil line and timing cover are to be expected and kudos to you for not editing them out There's nothing like the feeling when a bike first starts 👍
