040 - BRAUNSTON TO RUGBY! SNOW, ICE & FOG

After a lovely 11 days in snowy Braunston we are ready to move on. The weather has other ideas. we wake to an iced over canal day after day and watch as one of our current neighbours departs morning after morning only to return a few hours later unable to get through all the ice after the junction.
We are not in a rush so we wait it out and when the ice is finally thin enough we push on towards Rugby.

    It is nice to see Jo's eyes again. What you need, plus more coal, is a bushel of tennis balls. Perhaps you could open a Patreon account for George? Grooming, tennis balls, tennis balls, and flea stuff will all add up. Maybe his own floating leash and boat hook, so he is easier to pull out of the water? Thanks for a heartwarming family video. God bless

    Heh, we usually have a surplus of balls because of donations from people who meet him along the way. We’ve started buying him Chuckit balls made of rubber so he’s not wearing out his teeth, and that might be worth a Patreon some day! M

    We used to have fog/smog in the 70s-80s that was really really thick ( we had it a lot worse in earlier years but the clean air acts started to take effect and the early 80s was the last of the really good smogs ) to the point that you couldn't see your feet and if you stretched your arm out your hand was on the edge . So we had been out and on the way back the smog rolled in and dad said to me jump out the van and walk in front so we can find our way ( we had only got about half a mile to go ) I'd walked about 50 foot when I almost walked into a abandoned car in the middle of the road with the doors open , that was the first of 3 times dad ran me over !

    Hah! My mom drove over my foot quite a few times, once in a whiteout. I think she thought it was a learning opportunity for me. My worst fog was in Canada; I inched on down the road for quite a while until I completely lost sight of anything, pulled off the road and stopped to wait it out. When it cleared I was in a field, a hundred feet off the road, and looking at a bewildered cow. I hate fog! M

    For US viewers jubilee clip = hose clamp. Many places in the US are a LOT colder than your location. We have been a week with temperatures well below freezing and even colder overnight. We might get to above freezing by another 10 days. I can recall thick fog in the UK where hard to see a few metres ahead. Not fun to be boating in such conditions. Dave.

    Burr! Just wondering did you get to see the little canal section that the CRT reopened to make into a sort of floating museum? It is just past the last of the double locks, Cruising the Cut had shown a video of the CRT openin that up and I was wondering if it was finished.

  • @CruisingTheCut

    Ted Gallucci I'll chip in here, if I may. It wasn't a CRT project at Hillmorton but rather a group of local enthusiasts and volunteers ("The Old Mortonians" if I recall correctly). The work is very much unfinished, I think it relies on money and progress from a new local housing development for support and that's still very much ongoing.

    It does do some additional damage, but so does sitting in the ice while it floes about around you. We try not to move except when it's beef thing, and the bow wave pushed in front of the boat does most of the actual breaking. M

    Hi, Just wondered while you are moored up, do you ever go magnet fishing? One person found 13 windlasses near the lock gates and a chimney.!

    I've thought about it, right up until just after I read an article a while back about someone fishing out a load of old guns and an unexploded grenade... M

    Wow, I can see why that would probably be a turn off, but that grenade better on the end of a magnet string than scraping along the bottom of your boat, and of course you could always wait until the next gun amnesty lol X

    Hasn't so far, knock wood. Now that we've got the fire working it's not particularly cold on the boat, even when it's violently cold outside -- as it is again tonight. The key part is never running out of fuel!! M

    Do you need to have positioning lights (red and green) on a narrowboat?

  • @AndreasDuessca

    Esther Kalkbrenner No. There’s no point, on a 20’ wide body of water. You do need a white running light at the bow at night.

    how do you break ice on a canal?

  • @MinimalList

    @MinimalList

    6 жыл бұрын

    Well, I start by smashing up the bits nearest us with a gaff (a pope with a metal tip), then we just push through with the boat. We don't move unless the ice is very thin (most of that trip it was slightly thicker than a piece of paper, on some places up to a millimeter or two), but when we do the mass of the boat does the work. Well you are clearly hardy and determined.😂 Judging by the resupply of bags of coal spread over the roof - you are in a coal consumption situation? Just for academic interest what are the solar panels doing at this time of year AND how many hours are you having to run the engine to charge the batteries?

  • @MinimalList

    @MinimalList

    6 жыл бұрын

    We're definitely consuming coal, it's the only way to stay reliably warm! The solar is still helping, but the simple fact is we've been so overcast it's not by much. We're running the engine about every 3 days, right now. Thankfully with the Lithiums it's not for long, except on the days I forget to unplug my computer once it's charged! M
