A tornado warned storm moves into the Tulsa, Oklahoma metro area Tuesday evening. The video package begins with shots of a rotating wall cloud crossing highway 75 in the southwest portion of Tulsa, Oklahoma as tornado sirens sound. Then shows clips of heavy rain and wind from the storms in the area. After that, several clips of the storms gust front are shown from south of Tulsa. On the way back north, up highway 75, a motorist had hydroplaned into the ditch during the blinding/heavy rain. Several clips from that scene are included. Then the video package finishes with a rainbow along with an amazing display of mammatus clouds at sunset.

I am a born and raised Oklahoman...born in Pawhuska on Jan 1, 1961 (1st baby born in that yr in that town lol), but spent much of my childhood in Okmulgee (42 miles South of Tulsa) graduating from there in '79.....then moving to Tulsa, getting married and having 2 daughters born there. We left Tulsa and Oklahoma for Missouri in 1991, and in those 30 years that I and my family lived in Oklahoma, we were fortunate to never have been directly impacted by a tornado. We were much closer to being hit by a tornado when we lived in Missouri! Twice in the 12 years I lived there, we were a mile from a tornado hitting our home! The 2nd time, we had jumped in our car and headed for a friend's that had a basement, and on the drive over there we got caught up in the draft pulling towards the tornado and debris was falling all around us!! Once that passed, we knew that tornado was gone so we turned around and went back to make sure our house wasn't flattened lol. That's the closest I've ever come to being hit. My mom, 1 brother and his wife live in Tulsa, and I have a sister and her husband still in Okmulgee. I moved to sunny and warm......England....almost 20 years ago! The UK has more tornadoes than anywhere else in Europe, and 1 day a few years back I saw 1 from our back garden! There is footage of a tornado hitting Birmingham UK, and it's astonishing that no one on the streets that day were killed or severely injured. Here in the UK we have no warning devices whatsoever. There isn't even cut ins on TV to warn people of an approaching tornado!

Not sure how they are formed but they are called Mammatus Clouds, and the word is derived from the Latin word for mammaries. They are generally (not always)connected to cumulonimbus rain clouds.

They've dealt with these conditions before. In the Midwest, tornado weather can happen very quickly. Those people may have been coming home from work, going to work, or running necessary errands. Oklahoma is such a big state, everything is miles away from everything else, so when they have to go somewhere, they go. Those people know that a car can't outrun a tornado; they're just hoping it doesn't get anywhere near them. In the event of a tornado, if you can't reach a shelter, find the lowest spot on the ground, lie face down, and don't get up!
