My dad took me and my twin (we were 9 at the time) to this match, despite all three of us being Liverpool fans. Dad had been to the first leg in Germany with Everton friends, and he had helped to organise the trip. He went to Athens for the next round as well, where he was mistaken for Bill Shankly by a Greek street vendor, after one of his friends had explained that "this one is not an Evertonian, he supports Liverpool, you know, Bill Shankly". As for this match, I was supporting Borussia, but looking at it now it was a great game, two very good and well matched teams. Andy Rankin was superb, not just his penalty save but lots of others during the match. Lots of great players out there but he was MOTM for me.

I was there in the park end. Almost completely in line with Morrisey's goal. These nostalgic games show me how good a player Jonny Morresy was. And too little mentioned in the pantheon of Everton greats.

Fantastic. I was there, 10 years old with my dad. We used to carry a milk crate from home on Breck Road for me to stand on for every match. I don’t think you could get one in nowadays 🤔🤔🤔. By the way, a must for Bramley Moore is the D’s behind the goals .

Great to see the highlights of a game that I've only read about or listened to my Dad and his friends talk about. It's not often an English team beats the German's on penalties. It looked a classic night at Goodison too but you have to say without their keeper having the game of his life it would have been all over by half time. - Not sure what he doing for the first Everton goal though.

@@roywinstanley9402 In 1963 Everton were disallowed a perfectly good goal by Roy Vernon late in the game against Inter Milan at Goodison and lost by a single goal in the second leg to lose the tie. In September 1975 Gary Jones was flattened in the six-yard box by an AC Milan defender had a player sent off (Mike Bernard) at Goodison drew 0-0 and lost 1-0 in Milan. Howard Kendall was not just a top player and great manager; he learned the lessons of the past especially the way the Everton side he was part of were allocated a hotel in central Athens before the 1971 second leg against Panathinaikos and were kept awake all night by fans sounding their car horns outside the hotel. And the referees who gave English clubs nothing. With his savvy players like Andy Gray, Peter Reid and Neville Southall no one pulled the wool over their heads. A sad part of Everton's history was being unable to build on the European success of 1985 when the blues had the best Goalkeeper in the world, two top full backs and a world class striker (Gary Lineker) the Duncan Ferguson disallowed goal in 2005 against Villareal only served to show the blues seem cursed losing important goals at key moments in big games

I was at this game, and it showed even back then that we lacked a goal scorer commensurate with the other outfield players in this team. Joe Royle did score 20 in the 1969-70 side but with Morrissey the provider they were often headers or close in efforts. If this team would have had Martin Chivers or Francis Lee leading the line key games would have been won. Catterick tried to replace Joe, with Colin Stein in August 1968 after the lack of goalmouth skill in the 1968 FA Cup final when we lost 1-0 to West Brom. I always remember standing on the Goodison Road terracing near the player's entrance and the crowd's reaction when Joe Royle ran off the pitch after missing the first penalty. Sadly, no matter how well we played in four games against Borussia and Panathinaikos we never won a game, save the penalty shoot-out, and scored only 3 goals. I think a Roy Vernon, Gary Lineker or Andy Gray would have risen to the occasion back then.
