    The last time I took mine off I used a 3 ton jack and a breaker bar. The car was on jack stands for other work so I couldn't use the weight of the car. My son was in the car holding the brakes and it was funny when he jumped when the pulley broke loose. And I have one of those CJ kits on the shelf just in case. :)

    It’s amazing how much force is needed to break them loose. This redfire made a large bang when it cracked loose too. At first I thought something broke lol

    Oooooo the memories coming rushing back. So you may enjoy/cringe from my story of locking the motor. I think I have already told you this one but put the #1 cylinder at the start of the compression stroke. Feed some soft nylon rope down through the spark plug hole then rotate the engine to "rope lock" that cylinder. Then start pulling. I have always wondered if you could bump the starter to get it off. That's how the Mitsubishi 3000gt was done. Also no fun on the ford lightning.

    I have heard of the rope method too but never tried it. As for the starter method, that would work for a regular crank bolt but since the tri-bar is a left hand thread you’d actually be tightening it more. Too bad as that would make things much easier.

    About to take mine off. Problem is…I removed my brakes to paint them. I planned on putting it in 6th gear and holding the brakes…..So I’ll be getting that tool to lock the flywheel in place so I can take this pulley off. I’m putting a Metco lower on.

    The flywheel holder tool should work great. I usually like that method when doing clutch jobs and have the trans out.

    I've run into the same issue with the harmonic balancer bolt being stuck, how I resolved the issue was to place a breaker bar on the proper side to loosen the bolt and just bumped the starter. Using the starter as a tool. Do not crank the starter. Where there's a will there's a way.

  • @MalcolmV8

    @MalcolmV8

    The problem here though is the pulley has left hand threads so the starter bump would actually be tightening on even more.

    @@MalcolmV8 You should be able to flip the breaker bar the opposite direction.

    @@MalcolmV8 I probably should have said set the breaker bar at roughly 4 o'clock or 8 o'clock, depending on which way the engine cranks. Anyway, I hope that helps. I'm going on 58 and started working on my own vehicles because of the lack of money when I was young. Now I do it to keep from getting screwed, so to speak. I certainly know how frustrating it can be.

    @@briansutton7764 a left hand thread means the crank would need to spin the opposite direction. You'd need the starter to spin in reverse for it to work. That's why I couldn't use that method.

    I thought going after market gave the possibility of snapping the crank with big blower cars? Because it doesn't have that floating effect all on the crank itself.
