That Syracuse team played with a chip on their shoulder during that tournament run- their veterans still had that lingering embarrassment with the beatdown on their home floor from Navy in the '86 NCAA's! The Pearl never got to redeem himself since he had turned pro, but the guys who returned in '87 didn't forget that moment! They played with a hunger, especially Rony Seikaly! The two games he played against Florida and UNC in that regional was his best at Syracuse - 60 points and 24 rebounds (a man possessed)

Seikaly was out of his mind in that tournament. Heckuva team they had that year. I'm a life long Georgetown fan- still amazed that the Hoyas beat that team 3 x's in 1987.

@@jwainer4397 But that was an example of the proof at just how crazy balanced the Big East was in those days! What Georgetown did to Syracuse then u turn it around - Syracuse took two out of three from Providence and Providence shot lights out in taking two out of three from the Hoyas (especially superb from the perimeter in that Elite 8 game)! Unpredictability was the story of the day! Familarity breeds contempt! And never was it more evident than the Big East as college basketball's best league in the '80s!

@@bradlewis6514 The Big East was amazing in the 80s and there were so many great, intense games. I was lucky to get to see many of them live at Syracuse. The Pearl, Seikaly, Rafael Addison, Sherman Douglas, Howard Triche, Greg Monroe. Very exciting teams. In 85 Georgetown, St. Johns and Syracuse were all in the top 5 a lot of the season and Villanova ends up winning the national championship. That's how good the league was. Boston College, Pitt and Providence were no slouches either. Seems strange now, but back then Uconn actually sucked and were at the bottom of the league. I was at the game when Syracuse beat #1 (and seemingly invincible) Georgetown. It's the game where an orange was thrown and smashed off the backboard when Ewing was shooting a free throw and Thompson pulled the whole team off the court. It was crazy in there.

This game(for most of the country) was tape delayed and shown in the 11:30 PM ET time slot. As I previously posted it did air live across the state of Florida and Howard Cosell went ballistic Friday morning on his old Speaking of Sports program over the decision of the CBS stations in Florida doing this game over a President Reagan press conference.

This was Florida's breakthrough basketball season! Had never even been to the Dance before '86-87! Beat ACC champ NC State and crushed co Big Ten champ Purdue, then gave Syracuse all they could handle! They get forgotten bec of Billy Donovan's success but '87 was an accomplishment at that time bec Norm Sloan molded that team without any four or five star recruits like today's programs r able to go after, meaning battles between numerous schools for the same guy

Very insightful comment. This was indeed Florida's breakthrough season and the Florida teams of the late 80's were very, very exciting and very good. There is no bigger Gator bball fan than me and I love Billy Donovan, but I get a little annoyed when people act is if the program had no success prior to him (including the 1994 Lon Kruger "find a way" Final 4 team). I feel that Norm Sloan is pretty much forgotten and overlooked as an all-time great coach, but I think his success and record speak for itself (including a national championship, breaking UCLA's title streak at 7, bringing Florida to national prominence, etc.). On a side note for me personally, this game was a tough one for me to watch, because I actually transferred from Syracuse to Florida for the 86-87 year and I loved both teams.

This game broadcast drew a nasty response from Howard Cosell the next morning on his Speaking of Sports on ABC radio. What happened was the President Reagan had a prime time press conference on Thursday Night(this was a Thursday game) and all but 1 of the CBS affiliates in Florida preempted this press conference for this game. Howard felt it was inappropriate to preempt the president(regardless of party) for a mere college basketball game.

Packer was already the established one of the two having been with NBC doing their broadcasts of the FF pre 1982! Musberger got his position through the back door! Only reason he ended up paired with Packer was because Gary Bender chose to move on to college football after the '84 tournament! Being Packer's sidekick conveniently fell into Brent's lap! He should have stayed solely with football

When I was growing up, Brent and Billy were the soundtrack to the "big games", so it always felt important when they were doing the broadcast. I realize that the average viewer is more sophisticated now, but none of it holds up over the years-- it all sounds so clunky. Packer always takes a glass-half-empty approach to every teaching moment.
