023 - guide to santiago 2023 - neighborhoods, activities, music, safety, transportation
Here is a guide to Santiago, Chile in 2023. Things have changed quite a bit in Santiago over the last few years, so I would watch to see how things have changed and/or stayed the same. Additionally, I give some recommendations and advice on what to do in Santiago and how to get around; I give all the top places to go and see.

Thanks for sharing a more recent take on santiago. Curious if you heard of safety trending similarly (since pandemy) in valpo as well or just capital?

Hello! Hopefully, the video was somewhat helpful! I personally didn't go to Valparaiso because of the recent fires there, but I met some people who did travel there. They told me that during the day it was relatively safe, but during the night, you have to be careful. Uber or taxi when it gets too late, and don't wear anything too flashy. I'm not sure if this was the case before the pandemic, but according to Chileans, everywhere in Chile is slowly becoming more dangerous than before. I hope that helps!
While in Santiago, what parts of the city did you feel the most unsafe? I plan to visit some point during the late spring. I don't plan on going out at night, so do you have any other tips to keep safe? I also want to know how you made friends or found people to talk to?

The more northeast you go in Santiago, the more maintained/richer areas there are, so I would say, the southwestern parts of Santiago are the ones that aren't as safe. That said, a lot of people warned me in general to watch out in every part of the city. The most common were in the central/downtown areas near the touristy sites. To keep safe, I would recommend not wearing too much flashy clothing and accessories, try to blend in, and in crowded areas, make sure to keep all your valuables close and within sight. Some motorcycles disguise themselves as food delivery drivers and could come by and snatch items out of your hands, so be wary of them as you walk by. I was told that after 5pm is when safety becomes more of an issue, so especially after that time, be more aware. As for friends, it was by random occurrence. I was staying in an Airbnb, not a hostel, so the amount of social interaction was up to me. Generally, the people in Santiago are open to talk and strike up a conversation, however, not as much as other South American countries would. The people I met were from walking into supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, and coffee shops, and talking with them about Santiago and their lives. If you were to do something like this, I would recommend sticking to one that you like and going there often. Usually, they'll recognize you and eventually you might be able to hangout at some point. Hopefully, that's helpful!
