019 Jan & Dean Part 1

The Beach Boys cross paths with Jan & Dean many times over their careers. Here, we look at the beginnings of Jan & Dean and their early collaborations with Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys, up through "Dead Man's Curve"...and, hey, where is "Dead Man's Curve" anyway?

Very cool video, every time I think I know all there is about The Beach Boys I just keep learning new stuff! I knew Brian cowrote Surf City with them but I didn’t realize he had cowrote all those other songs that you talked about. I’m also a big Jan and Dean fan and it was cool to find out that the song Linda was about Linda McCartney, learn something new every day! I’m new to your channel so looking forward to catching up with the rest of your videos to learn some more info.

I remember hearing the history about Surf City back in the 70s, and not only was Murry and the boys upset with Brian for giving away what turned out to be a #1 hit, but that's Brian's succinct soaring falsetto as well. To my trained musical ear, it immediately seemed to be Brian, but I read recently in another comment that it was Glen Campbell singing that falsetto, as he was part of the famous Wrecking Crew then, used by Jan and Dean also, and would go on to fill in for Brian on the road singing those falsettos a few years later. Does the Jan and Dean book you shared cover this for Surf City? Thanks!! And your site is fantastic!

Thanks for the comments and info, and for raising a very interesting question! Mark A Moore' "Jan & Dean Record" acknowledges that the vocalists on "Surf City" have been debated for years. He concludes that Jan and Brian doubled the lead vocal and that Brian sang some falsetto in the harmonies, along with the vocal group The Matadors. There's a question as to whether Dean is anywhere on "Surf City." Moore's book offers quotes from Dean in 1977 and 1989 saying he isn't on the record at all and, then, a quote from Dean on his website saying he and Brian sang the falsetto together. So, it seems, Dean isn't even sure. (Moore points out that Dean often wasn't around in the studio so Jan would use other vocalists for the falsettos, including Brian.) Thanks again for raising the question, ms! Very interesting stuff!

This was a pretty good video, except that "Jan & Dean's Golden Hits" were NOT their first album. That was their first album on the Liberty Records label, and came out in 1962. However, their actual debut album came out in 1960 and was released in Doré Records. It was a self-titled LP simply called "Jan & Dean" and is now often referred to as "Jan & Dean's 1960 Debut Album" or "Jan & Dean on Doré Records". It is my favorite J&D album! I think it was a much better album than "Golden Hits" because it not only contained their hit "Baby Talk", but also several other songs that came out as singles or b-sides. (A reissue done in the 90's also contained a few extra singles, not on the original album). The album was a really good overview of Jan & Dean's early days on Doré. The "Golden Hits" album was mainly made up of cover recordings that were done specifically as filler material for that album, and much of their early material was left out.

Yes, the Dore album was pretty much a collection singles with "Baby Talk" being the most successful. It's "B" side was "Jeanette Get Your Hair Done". Most of these tunes are a doo wop sound. I enjoy them. They were after Jan & Arnie but, predate what you were showing.

Good stuff Steve ! When I was younger I would get tired of the 15 songs that CKLW would play over and over again. I would switch over to the Oldies Station and they would play a lot of Beach Boys and Jan and Dean. I would have sworn those Jan and Dean tracks were the Beach Boys, my twelve year old ears could not tell the difference. Now I am wondering did Jan and Dean have that Beach Boys sound first?

Hey Matt! I think you're right; The Beach Boys copped some of their sound from Jan and Dean in their earliest work. (Apparently, Jan and Dean thought so too, but seemingly didn't hold it against The Beach Boys.) I had the same experience of getting tired of CKLW's limited playlist. (By the way, CKLW will come up for some discussion in episode 28, "Randy Bachman Meets The Beach Boys.") Thanks for the comments! Hope to hear more!

Hi Steve. I wonder if you can help me out: Do you know which version of "Vegetables" by Jan & Dean was produced by Brian Wilson and where to find it? Good question! I thought it was on the "Jan and Dean Anthology Album" but I just looked and I saw it's listed as recorded in 1968. I asked David Beard of Endless Summer Quarterly. He tells me the "1972 version" (which David says, and I believe he's right, was recorded in late '71) was actually the 1968 version with vocal overdubs from Brian, Marilyn and Diane Rovell and IS the version on the "Jan and Dean Anthology Album" and wasn't actually produced by Brian. He tells me it was also released as a promo-only single in 1972 with a picture sleeve, which he just sent me a photo of. (It's similar to the "Jan and Dean Anthology Album" cover art.) Thanks for asking a great question! It allowed me to learn something I didn't realize I never knew!

Jan & Dean and The Beach Boys sorta borrowed from eachother in various ways. But there's no doubt that Jan & Dean and Jan & Arnie came first. They were having hits in the late 50's, several years before anyone knew who the Beach Boys were. In fact, the Beach Boys used to sometimes be the backup band and opening act for Jan & Dean, in the early days. However, it was the Beach Boys who got Jan & Dean into the surfin sound.

@@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444 And to follow up on this subject, I think that Jan Berry himself has never really been given the credit he deserves as the songwriter, producer and arranger that he was. While Phil Specter gets all the credit for use of The Wrecking Crew, it should also be noted that Jan Berry was using many of these same musicians at or around the same time if not earlier than Phil Specter, yet Jan Berry never seems to get any credit for that. And it was Jan who convinced Brian Wilson to start using these same musicians on Beach Boys records rather than using his band members in order to get the best sound. Sidewalk Surfin’ is a song that many people feel Jan just ripped off from a previous Beach Boys hit, when the reality was Catch A Wave was a buried album track on the Surfer Girl LP and was never released as a single, and one could certainly argue the only reason Catch A Wave gets any significant attention at all is due to the hit status of Sidewalk Surfin’, which Jan completely reworked the arrangements on that song, a much improved sound in my opinion. Another interesting Jan & Dean fact , is that The Grass Roots hit single “Where were you when I needed you” released in 1966 was actually a cover of Jan & Dean, who recorded it originally in 1965 on their Folk-n-Roll LP but opted to not release it as a single….
