I have a 3116 in a generator set. They are a good engine. Caterpillar made a block heater that screws into the block just behind the oil cooler. You should install one in your truck’s engine if it doesn’t already have one. It makes starting the engine much easier. Also, if it is that cold outside, your cat should be indoors. Just because they have a fur coat doesn’t mean they can’t freeze to death.

Not surprised that it Started, those Cat diesel engines are good, even in cold as long as the battery isn't shit

@@dioniciobedoy8319 if they dont, you could just 6.6 lbz swap it. Best option. Those will last 1 million miles

I'm about to trade an old rusted out c30 for a c60 or a top kick my choice. but i can also have my choice of a 5.9 cummins or a 3116 cat to go in it. any suggestions?

Either or 3116 and the topic is a very reliable motor and will started in any weather Topkick is a very good drug 3116 is very reliable just don't touch the engine leave it alone don't try turning it up and only use cat filters it's got all kinds of pulling power it's a torque engine is not high horsepower but it is a torque engine

How long did your INTAKE HEATER stay on AFTER the engine started? It was 28 seconds PRIOR to cranking, but I'd like to know how long it stayed on AFTER you started it before it went out, and your batteries started charging. Until that light goes out you're drawing juice from the batteries. We have this issue with our Fire Engines CAT 3116

It stays on for about five minutes your alternator soon as that truck starts it should be taking over for the batteries like mines 100 amp alternator I've never had any issues with my batteries One thing I did fine when I bought my new batteries I had called cat and ask them what I should be running they said the biggest cranking a batteries that I possibly could get and I'm running two 1200 cranking up truck batteries I find the best service you're ever going to get cold cat directly because GM hasn't got a clue good luck

Thanks pal ... We're starting in a heated garage, and the intake heater light stays on45 seconds prior to starting and for about 7 to 10 minutes after starting all the while sucking juice even when idled to 1000 rpms constant ... Sucks ...

+FDNY8231 like I said you be better to call cat on this something doesn't sound right mind will run for little bit but not that long have you tried replacing the grid heater or the body control module?

Called CAT, and we'll see what they say after the tech researches it ... We may just DQ the intake heater ... Going to wait and see what he says ... Thanks for the help! Just wanted to see if they ALL do that ...

+FDNY8231 well I wish I could've been more help to you I'm just actually learning this stuff myself but I found cat had a better idea when I spoke to their tec there i'm thinking that it's in the engine control or body control module I don't think it would be the intake heater but then again I could be wrong if the intake heater has a short in it that could be the problem too but definitely mine does run after the engine is running but it doesn't run for that long but the alternator should've took over as soon as the engine was running I know the grid heaters take up to 50 to 60 A to run so they are definitely pulling on those batteries hard but like I said as soon as the engine starts the alternator should automatically kick in i'll do a little bit of research here too i'll get back to you soon as I can this is a firetruck we got to get this problem fixed keep me posted I'll see what I can do on my end

Shame on you. That is truck abuse. If you want something to start in 0 degree weather keep it in a warm garage. That is hard on an engine when you do shit like that. I don't even find it funny.
