The treadmill in our gym has three options: easy which feels like 100 elo, medium probably 500 elo and then hard which could be stockfish maximum I don’t know it mobbed the floor with me. 😢

Well, if the treadmill has internet access, it could be connected to a bot. All you need is internet access, some back-end code to connect it to a bot, and a toaster could destroy you. You're not playing the device in front of you, you're playing against whatever it's connecting to.

The tension of not knowing what kind of devious betrayal of rules would be next made this feel like a human fighting an evil god who is just fooling around with his creation, bullying it with unfair power difference. This is exactly what happend here. Building "bots" is just another way to say you build an interface and prompt ChatGPT in the backend. And ChatGPT doesn't know the rules, it just remixes words.

i'm fairly sure it's a custom language model, same tech as chatgpt but not the same specific thing. it looks like it had a bit more training, it has remarkable board awareness given how shit some of its moves are

losing a game against a treadmill is a futurama kinda thing to happen lmao

I kind of like the idea of respawning pieces, sort of a Doom Nightmare difficulty where every dead piece has a chance each turn to respawn on their starting square if the square is open. Make it so that the stronger the piece is, the less likely it will respawn. Could be a fun gimmick gamemode.
