Reached 3000 subscribers on 4 May 2023. Never thought I'd see that many. Thanks to all of you. I hope to see my other channel reach that someday. @OregonOldTimerWOODTURNING.
Old retired folks have time on their hands to spend on projects and repairs that working people hire done.
I make things, fix things, and sometimes screw things up. But mostly I have fun.
I try to keep the crap in my videos to a minimum. I probably have more time to spend editing them than you have to spend watching them. Life is short, so I like to keep my videos short. It saves both of us time for important things.

The work on the boat is never "done". 😉👍
True.
I watched your fishing and crabbing videos and am intrigued with your boat! 🙂 She's lovely. What's her history and make, do you know? Or did you perhaps even build her yourself? Length? 18(?) Love the flat bottom and dagger/center board set up. I've had several flat bottom wooden boats with centerboards and loved them all. 👍👍👍
Here is the link to my building the late Jeff Spira's "Tillamook" dory. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zq6OxNWgdtzfeZc.html I've not seen daggerboards in any boats other than sailboats. I didn't think I could be the only person who thought of it.
That was a great balancing act.
Have you considered using a segmented belt? That would allow you to make a belt of the correct length while mitigating vibration.
I sold that lathe two years ago, so it's somebody else's problem now. But, no, I hadn't considered the belt you describe. I didn't know such a thing existed.
Just watching you on your knees made mine hurt! I built a 20" platform to raise my mill up so i dont have to bend over much to remove my lumber. I have a small excavator to load logs so i dont need a ramp to roll logs up to get them on the mill. Its about the same height as the trailer frame so it gives me lots of room under for the clamps to hang down.
Mill height is a trade-off, all right. If I had a tractor to lift logs, putting the mill higher would be better. If I milled only small logs, loading onto a raised mill by hand would be doable. But by having the mill on the ground, my back gets plenty of exercise.
Your wooden boat with a dagger is good in rough water..watching from the Philippines
I don't go out in really rough conditions, but I've never been fearful or even concerned crossing the Tillamook bar and fishing in the ocean.
Man, that opening was like the start of a horror movie. Had me hooked though! Great video and great storytelling. I got a brush mower pro 26
That's one movie I'd like to forget. Sold the thing for $100 and was glad to see it gone.
Cool looking boat!
Thank you. Building it was satisfying.
Nice work!
Coming from you, that's a real compliment!
Eric, is someone doing your camera work?(besides you)
Nope, just me. That's why filming almost doubles time needed to get a job done.
Very good job .
Thank you, Frank.
Looks very nice.
Thank you.
Good light, and good air are more important than what is underfoot. Looking good there, Eric!
I have to have plenty of outside light. No power except a generator.
Looks a whole lot better than I thought it was going to, looks real good 👍👍👍😎☕
I surprised myself with the appearance, too.
The windows makes the job look great.
I think so, too. Better than I expected.
Looking good! “Getter done “
Thank you.
HooRah!
Doors are next. That may sound boring, but, they won't be normal doors. I'll be making them up as I go along, of course.
Those should keep the weather outside where it belongs. I saw the strap to hold them shut...is there a stick to prop them open?
Two straps on each window, Paul. A two-foot stick, notched at both ends, for each window. Works fine.
Looking just like the outside of my house! Only mine has stain on the boards.
That's a luxury I can do without on this.
well done
Thank you.
Thank You. And that was codger not cougar! I hate the spell corrections!
Gotta keep an eye on the robots, Robert. They're out to get us.
👍👍👍😎☕
May I suggest you purchase a couple of Rigid brand saw horses with a 2x4 top piece. You make my back hurt watching you bend over to pick everything up😂
I regard bending over and picking things up as a free version of what others pay gyms for. When I was 15, I was a scrawny pin boy in a bowling alley. After one busy league night, I calculated I'd picked up 19 tons of pins and balls from floor level to waist height. I couldn't believe it. Showed my calculations to the boss. He looked them over and said I may have figured it too light. A few years later, a doctor remarked on the musculature of my back. I told him of my early job. Ah, he said.
Good job as normal. Glad to see you doing more videos
I'm getting older and slower. With two channels to feed, I keep busy, and I'm forcing myself to be less perfectionist in editing. More to come.
Ha! I'm an ole cougar myself and I knew there was a better clamp. I called and talked to Woodland (and I do like them a lot) but they said no. I was about to order anyway and and suss it out but your video sealed the deal for sure. Had there been any issues? I am new at this and having fun building my shed as first project. Thanks for your knowledge ....for what use is it without sharing?! (retired teacher)
The only negative to this installation is, the size of the log or cant I can use it on is less than with the standard clamps. However, one viewer suggest that, if I'd mounted it UNDER the track, I'd have more travel. I use the cam clamp all the time and seldom need to also use the screw clamps.
Ahh, sacrificial log or in this case board supports for better clamping and support...you are a tricky Old Timer! 😁
I learn from others, Paul, though I do sometimes have an inspired thought.
I mean right, he asked why I called his last video motivation. East texas is no joke this time of the year. Ha
I got warm here today, too. It got up to 72 and we opened windows to let the heat in.
I Like seeing an "old man" pound nails! LOL Gives me Hope! Been 90+ degrees here for a week and o relief in sight. Last rain was May 27 and that was 1/4 inch. Garden getting baked. Have to water evey 3-4 days now..
A friend in Virginia is watering every other day, and the heat dome is just arriving there. We haven't had to water anything yet. Happy in Hebo, Oregon, that is.
Crazy! I have the same tool belt. 35+ years old. Worn almost out!! Best belt ever. I have about three new ones that have been given to me as replacement gifts. (Have no idea where they’re at). I also just got a Woodland Mills 130 Max, with the power head option, delivered!!
Keep it inside where the birds aren't.
Let the ends rot! Probably won’t be your fix in the future anyway.
Yeah, I know. Don't need a 35-year roof, and lifetime memberships are no longer economical.
WOW!! What a cooler full of nice crabs. You are good sportsmen always throwing the females back insures crabs for the future. The best of luck for future crabbing trips. Take care and be careful from the mountains of East Tennessee.
It's not just good sportsmanship, Jake. It's the law regarding Dungeness crabs.
👍👍👍Keeps me interesting it did not seem like 10 minutes 😎☕
Glad you're still with me, David.
well done
Thanks.
U R Living The Caleb Joshua Blessing.
Not familiar with that, Joseph.
Just the motivation I needed to go play with my mill. Haha. Making 1x12 shiplap
You need motivation?
@@OregonOldTimer it was 95 today down here.
@@cosmoscorner Now I understand☺.
There's a recall on those straps I believe
I didn't hear about that. I'll investigate. Thank you.
Connect belt in front, when hooked rotate entire belt around to pockets in front. My arms don’t work good in back anymore either!
Tried that, but it kept hanging up on my suspenders when I tried to turn it around😕.
Was watching the left hand level wind in action and was thinking it would be very awkward. Those Shakespeare ugly stick Rods are some of the best value rods available. Did you know they have a life time warranty that they actually honour. Not only that I had them custom make a few rods for some special setups I was using. I’ve had dozens of different brands of rods over the years, but if I’m setting up gear for communal use, those ugly sticks are fantastic. These modern inexpensive rods are very useable, and I don’t cry when guests damage them. Nice fishing boat !
We stopped at a sporting goods store on the way home from a previous salmon trip during which I broke a rod. Bought Ugly Sticks for both of us. Didn't know about the lifetime warranty, but I doubt we'll ever have to use it.
Nice fishing boat !
Thank you. Couldn't afford to buy one, so I built one.
Thanks for the video. Good points and things to consider.
Glad it was helpful.
U can do It! 12 into 18 is 1 1/2 the 1/2 is 60 12 goes into 60 5 times. Answer 15. :D
Easy for you to say, Joseph.
ASH is really hard to nail into too! At least U have free Lumber! I'm building a greenhouse with used lumber, used replaced storm windows and old Fiberglass Garage door panels for the roof. Making it all fit has been quite the chore! LOL
Making this thing all fit is a chore, too. Easy enough so far, but I'm just now getting to the plastic windows.
Very clever. I've never seen that done. Great job
Glad you liked it, Jerry.
well done
Thanks.
perfect timing going out today with my grandson to cut some siding for a tree house!😊
I hope what I learned makes it easier for you to get good boards.
So you have thicker boards to put at the worst weather area (west end of the south side?). But like you said, not cabinet work. Our house has cedar board and batt with 14” wide on the front, 10 “ & 12” on the sides, and 8”, 6”, and 4”. on the back side. And nobody notices!
Board and batten is inherently rustic looking, so variations don't look out of place. The only thickness sorting I did when nailing boards on was to avoid putting the thickest ones next to the thinnest. That's coming up soon.
Good video Eric. I suspect each discrepancy in the lower boards exaggerated any discrepancy of the upper boards but it'll still work as barn siding.
The little things do add up. Thanks, Paul.
👍👍👍😎☕
The pully system at the end made for a great cliff hanger/boat hanger.😲
That operation had me holding my breath, for sure.
I like putting gravel floors in my lean-to additions -- put down some plastic to block the ground moisture, then a couple inches of the gravel of your choice and it makes a nice floor. Though I cannot get it here anymore, used conveyor belt from a rock yard or quarry is an even better option. They usually give it away for free.
Excellent idea, Jack. I don't know of any rock quarries in my neck of the woods, but I may look into that. Soil here drains well. In spite of the 100 inches of rain we get at the house most years, the dirt covered by that roof is always dry and dusty. Closing that bay in may change that, though. Thanks for the gravel/plastic suggestion.
