8 Bit Theme Park Japan

8 Bit Theme Park Japan

Tips, Trips and Trivia from Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea.

8 Bit Theme Park started as a project to recreate classic theme park rides in a early video game style, eventually the channel evolved as I wanted to be able to talk about theme parks where I live in Tokyo, Japan. I felt that there wasn't much in-depth discussion of the Tokyo theme parks like there was for American or European parks. So I started by making in-depth videos about Tokyo Disney Resort, and hope to shed some light on the lesser-known parks in the area, too.

    I’m sorry to hear that you weren’t super impressed with this attraction. I can understand as so much of the ride takes place outside, but at the same time, I honestly prefer a ride with physical sets than a largely screen ride like Peter Pan mostly is.

    I honestly think that all they really needed to pull it all off with only muted complaints despite it being a mini-miniland was to add an "I've Got a Dream" scene at the Snuggly Duckling to the ride. Just sit Rapunzel down between Hook Hand on the piano and Big Nose while they do most of the singing. Put Flynn on a hook in the back with his unimpressed look gazing back and forth. Put in some simple animatronics that just go up and down offset from each other to the beat along with Shorty spinning around the scene with the bow and arrow, and then your choice of the "dream" gags in the background (some of which are already on the ride at the end anyway). It's pretty easy to visualize and while it'd be a bit of a blowout in terms of the sheer number of animatronics, really you could get away with only Rapunzel, Hook Hand, and Big Nose needing to be particularly expressive. The rest could be on a fairly simple cycle. I'm not an expert on how expensive these things get or how much real estate they had to work with, but I think it's safe to say that Rapunzel's Lantern Festival is currently on the line of doing the bare minimum and is carried by Rapunzel's tower and the Lantern Festival scene. Just one more centerpiece scene and it satisfies as a full ride experience even if would still be a little short.

  • @8bitthemepark
    @8bitthemepark5 күн бұрын

    One more scene would help a lot yea, or maybe they should have just done the lantern scene and tried to communicate that so you don’t feel short changed? Right now it rushed through these tiny scenes that make you feel like there should be more.

    Do you know if they do anything with the animatronic in bad weather? Would be interesting to find out how they deal with the high heat/direct sunlight, through to heavy wind/rain. Would guess the ride itself closes in rain?

  • @8bitthemepark
    @8bitthemepark5 күн бұрын

    Ride has still been operating in the rain and sun. I’m really surprised there doesn’t seem to be a B mode, like a curtain or something so they can get away with it when Rapunzel stops working. I’m guessing they have a replacement Rapunzels that they can quickly swap out, which is itself pretty wild.

    Among all the disappointments I've had with this "microland", the "sweet ever after" dessert was the biggest one to me. Tbf, I was already setting myself up for disappointment by expecting it to be some warm crispy tart with a little filling inside like a dessert variant of the pies in Arendelle Banquet Hall (which I actually liked). I also think for the ride, in addition to budget constraints, there really was not much space to work with. It's stuck up right next to the service road that goes over the entrance to Fantasy Springs. Still, they could have found a bunch of ways to expand the ride beyond that road. Maybe a small drop? Pirates in Anaheim goes under the railroad that way. Then again, there's still important backstage areas to consider.

  • @8bitthemepark
    @8bitthemepark6 күн бұрын

    Yea the dessert is a sad little thing isn’t it.. They’d have more space if they didn’t force a hotel in there that doesn’t fit with the theme at all!

    To be honest, I feel the standby pass never opens if you did not at least bought 1 premium pass. I recently went to pre-check disneysea for a client (I work as a guide and they want a german guide for the park) and I did not purchase the premium pass because I would have to do that with my own money. The standby pass never opened for me, all day long

    The park is too spread out which is only made worse with Fantasy Springs entry requirement. Not only does Fantasy Springs add more size to an already gigantic park, it places the very inconvenient time restricted entry pass on each attraction. Not fun needing to traverse back and forth throughout the park during summer heat when one entry pass is in the morning, the other afternoon, and last at night. Unless you want to spend the entire day in Fantasy Springs or the right side of the park all day… I thought Walt Disney World’s virtual queue made vacationing inconvenient, but Tokyo DisneySea took that times 10! Otherwise great park!

  • @8bitthemepark
    @8bitthemepark7 күн бұрын

    You’re right. I’m hoping the entry system for Fantasy Springs comes to an end pretty soon. I think it’ll be necessary during the busy months of October - December but maybe next January they can stop using it. It’ll be so nice when you can just stroll in and out like the rest of the park

    I think exclusivity is nice to a point. But, begrudging a fan a small souvenir from the hotel just because they didn’t spend the night seems a bit petty. You payed to enjoy the full experience true but not to bar all people from having any token ( or small souvenir) of having enjoyed a visit to the grounds. It comes across as selfish and elitist. My guess is eventually the hotel will receive a merchandise shop.

    I've never been there, but it seems like Tokyo DisneySea has a good mix of lands that are IP-based, and lands that are not. Fantasy Springs of course is shared by Peter Pan, Frozen, and Tangled, and the other IP lands are Mermaid Lagoon (The Little Mermaid), Arabian Coast (Aladdin/One Thousand and One Nights), Lost River Delta (Indiana Jones), and, if you want to count the works of Jules Verne as an IP, Mysterious Island. The other lands, namely Mediterranean Harbor, American Waterfront, and Port Discovery, seem to be less IP-focused and more about overall cohesion with the park's theming, as all of the lands represent different ports-of-call around the world. The entire park is like one giant walkthrough attraction; it looks incredible.

    Peter Pan is one of my favorite Disney films, I’m glad that Tokyo Disneyland still gets additions based on Disney IP from the 20th century, while sadly all the US has gotten in the past decade is things based on IP made or acquired under Iger. You’re right about the Skull Rock and Captain Hook ship! I love that they built them at Tokyo DisneySea! I can see from your video that Skull Rock provides great views! I’m glad you like the land itself so much. It definitely looks fantastic from your footage. The rides themselves I honestly can’t help but wish were a bit better though. I never really watched the Tinker Bell films from around 15 or so years ago, so Busy Buggie isn’t something I’m sure I’d enjoy. And it doesn’t look that impressive from your footage here. But I understand that it was clearly designed for very young kids. As for Neverland Adventure, it looks like a good ride, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say how much the ride uses screens is disappointing to me. Ever since The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened in 2010, the American Disney Parks have felt like they’re trying so hard to emulate Universal not just with IP lands like Pandora and Galaxy’s Edge, but also with attractions that use primarily screens and projections. While Tokyo Disneyland still seemed to build rides with physical sets, props, and animatronics like Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast. I know that Peter Pan’s Flight is at Tokyo Disneyland next door, but I personally wish it wasn’t a 3D ride. As Peter Pan is the only one of the three films represented in Fantasy Springs to be animated hand drawn, I honestly find it ironic that Tangled and Frozen get rides with animatronics and physical sets while Peter Pan gets CGI screens.

  • @AuraleafStorm
    @AuraleafStorm19 күн бұрын

    They probably chose to make Peter Pan a 3D ride because it would be easier to simulate flying (without making another clone of Peter Pan's Flight). A family-oriented rollercoaster might've also worked, but I personally prefer dark rides over coasters. You're right that a screen-based attraction is not ideal, but at least we have both this and Peter Pan's Flight. And on the topic of older IPs getting some love, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin also have their own lands at Tokyo DisneySea, so it seems like it's the park to be to see older IPs get the attention they deserve. Those along with the Beauty and the Beast ride they built at Tokyo Disneyland a few years ago calls to attention the fact that the Tokyo parks have more ride representation for the Disney Renaissance films than the US parks do. The Renaissance films are the Disney films I personally grew up with, so I've always been sore over the fact that most of them still don't have dark rides dedicated to them. Somehow Zootopia got a dark ride before The Lion King. Somehow.

    About the Lost Kids namechange, Nibs the rabbit is actually a girl in FS. What's interesting is that she was still portrayed as male in some earlier concepts for Neverland Adventure. It's quite an odd change, but it's really no big deal in the end. The Yorkshire pudding was the only thing about the miniland that bothered me. It was so dry that I couldn't be bothered to finish it. I strongly agree that this area works perfectly in DisneySea. When compared to the Batb miniland in Disneyland, there's a clear difference in design philosophy; something ignored by certain Forbes journalists.

    The music in this hotel is really funny. They just stole the old wdw today music and added a bunch of extra classical pieces. The hotel needs some springs themed water facilities. It would be nice to relax in a Fantasy Springs onsen with a few character rocks. I also find those grey bricks on the lower parts of the hotel so weird. It feels like they were supposed to make a mosaic like many of Gaudi's works. What I do like about this hotel is that it looks huge compared to the Miracosta and the Grand chateau has an iconic silhouette (still could look better, though). I just went yesterday and was kind of surprised by how huge the grand paradis lounge was. Easily the prettiest part of the hotel. It also seems they were trying to mix rococo and art nouveau, which could be really nice if done properly (also makes walking through the hotel at night with the random cast members standing still less unsettling). Hopefully they work on it further in the future. It would be nicer if the story of the Duchess was further explored too. Btw, nice impression at 22:15.

But going by what you shared here I think I’ll likely stay somewhere else when I hope to come to Tokyo Disneyland in around four years or so, unless the prices have gone down significantly by then. I’m glad you think the land itself is fantastic and I’m looking forward to seeing your upcoming video on it! I would say that maybe The Oriental Land Company is starting to decline in it’s new additions from this hotel, but at least the land itself looks phenomenal. 30:21 As a lover of classic Disney shorts this fountain made me happy to see!

    I don't think its worth to stay in the hotel around TDR when Tokyo is nearby with better hotel options and food. For OLC the parks are more important than the hotel even the food. If they deliver the most important stuff the others are really secondary importance. Many hotels outside of TDR are way better with better food. Other than Maricosta and Toy Story Hotel, others are just ok.

    The purple vines are supposed to be wisteria, something pretty from Tiana’s world, but the vines are actually extremely invasive and evil. They are gorgeous when they bloom, but that’s only like for a week. So for the rest of the 51 weeks the plant looks ugly, and you can’t try to cut it down, but it just grows back so fast that you can never catch up. Even if you could, many of the vines are so embedded into the soil that it will spring back up an acre away! The weight of the vines will collapse fences and anything it can get a hold of, which is usually other plants you do want to keep, but they end up dying because they are either strangled to death or can’t get enough sunlight. I hate wisteria so much! OLC should have really considered the amount of PTSD American southern tourist have with this.

  • @briansieve

    The dreadfully generic hotel is the result of all the Hilton and Marriott people they keep hiring who think they're more elite and "expensive" looking. What surprises me is that OLC let imagineering get away with it.

    So my family just recently stayed 4 nights at the Sheraton, and it’s like way cheaper, and I feel, better than the US deluxe hotels at DLR and WDW. I wasn’t looking for much, just something nicer than the value hotels I was used to. I was hoping to get a bayside view, but when I opened the window, I discovered that I was staying in freaking Neverland! Like, the green volcanoes were there, smoking, and they even light them up at night. We could see the fireworks and drone show, AND monorail from our hotel room window! June 5th was our DisneySea day, but I still felt like I experienced Fantasy Springs. I could walk to the Bayside station, same station as the Fantasy Springs hotel, and see the decor every day as we took off. Also, due to the way the loop is, the train isn’t as crowded, and I was able to sit in front, basically getting a perfect view of the resort as if I were driving the monorail myself. I couldn’t believe staying off property could be so magical.

For instance: filming at 25 FPS, use a shutter speed of 1/50. This will help to synchronise the shutter speed with the light's frequency.
