  Phenol or acetasylicilic acid. React with H2SO4 and heat holding at 60 to 90 deg for 30 minutes. Next cool to about 50 deg C and add nitric acid or sodium or potassium nitrate in small portions maintaining a temperature of 40 to 60 deg C in slight excess. When temperature ceases to increase, slowly heat to 100C and hold it there for 1 to 2 hours. Next crash on ice water mixture. Allow a few minutes for the TNP to crash out. Next filter off the acid water mix saving the yellow crystals.
