    Blanca Peak beat me up and took my lunch money back in early June of 2006. I was a teenager climbing solo, traveling light, aiming to do it as a day hike. I summited in the mid-afternoon, but then descended into the wrong basin and took an embarrassingly long time to figure it out. After three days and two nights, I stumbled out of there and bummed a ride over close to where my car was parked. I had gone a few days without food, but the Wendy's drive-through was the only place that was still open after I got back to my hotel. I bought a ton of food but found I couldn't eat very much at a time. So I went back to the hotel and spent the night in this weird cycle of sleeping an hour or two, eating what I could, sleeping another hour or so, eating more, etc. Certainly an adventure

    Your video had came up in my rotation of videos. Welcome to our neck of the woods! I live in Vernal. I've visited the monument many times, and there's still much to discover. I'm glad that you had fun! To add, my late mother's ashes are spread out at Plug Hat Butte, she absolutely loved that part of the area.

  • @TheTravelingTacos
    @TheTravelingTacos3 ай бұрын

    There’s about 20-30 people in the group. There’s a guide every couple of horses who talks about the canyon the majority of the time you’re riding and also stops to point out things. We learned a TON while on the trail!

    Thank you! Some of the time I had the camera on a clip attached to myself, but also the horses don’t go terribly fast so handling it with one hand and holding the reins with the other wasn’t super hard ;) Enjoy it!!

    When I was a teenager in the 60s it was actually pretty nice. I visited last fall and was really disappointed. A steel mill right in the middle of the shoreline and a nuclear power plant at the east end kind of ruined it for me. The pollution burned my eyes and nose. Glad it worked out for you.

Going from the eclipse in Texas to New Mexico wheeler peak. If body does alright with altitude going for blanca peak and would be first 14er!! Sadly I don't have as much time as hoped to acclimate so we'll see what my Midwest lungs can handle 😂

    I was in the area just a week ago. There is a LOT of snow on Blanca this year. It won't be close to gone in the couple of weeks until you plan to go. Unless you're prepared for a full on winter conditions ascent, with snowshoes, crampons and ice axe, you probably will need to wait until mid May or possibly even June.

  • @SuperdutyExplorer
    @SuperdutyExplorer4 ай бұрын

    @russlehman2070 thanks for the update! I'm going as high as feels safe, being solo a have to play on side of caution alittle.... I'm rocking shoeshoes, and will see how 13k in New Mexico goes first! Just got done with a blizzard over night trip testing gear in some smaller mountains!

  • @russlehman2070
    @russlehman20704 ай бұрын

    @@SuperdutyExplorerGood to know. I thought I'd mention it, as a lot of people from out of state don't realize how late the snow can stick around in Colorado, and come in April or May expecting summer conditions. Also, the Sangre de Cristos often don''t get as much snow as the mountains farther west, but there was a big storm in March that really dumped on the east side of the divide.

    I learned to fly fish on the Frying Pan with Ralph Coffman on Ralph’s section of the river next to his cabin in 1967. The Rudi dam was finished in 1968 and the “Pan” has become one of the greatest tail-waters in the world. The trout get very large by feeding on Mysis Shrimp that come out of the dam. Mysis patterns are available at the fly shops along with very small Baetis mayfly nymph patterns. Good luck to you next time! Jerry H
