I first heard this song 2007-2009 my dad was falling into intense addiction again this time to pills. This song and video encapsulate the dissapointment of that time but also the beauty and freedom in accepting loneliness or dissapointment and finding the way alone.

There's a Walgreens near the train station I take the commuter rail from that somehow reminds me of this video. I go there and walk around and listen to this sometimes while I'm waiting for a late train. They think I want to steal something and follow me around but I'm really just thinking about Emily Haines.

I love this song it has this way of producing this ambush of emotions that are eerily satisfying. I feel that Emily Haines as well as Metric are creative geniuses that always find a way that started in the 90s and continues to produce this uniqueness and sound that feels almost incomparable to anything else which holds a very special meaning.

With a feather in your cap Another jewel in your crown Another notch in your belt You're the captain at the helm The statuette on your shelf Says you're better than me Oh Better than me Oh With all the coal in the core All the water and the oil You can buy any girl in the world With the soil that you borrow And the moral you deny You can buy the eyes of the world Better than me (you're better than me) Oh Better than me (you're better than me) Oh Better than me (you're better than me) Oh Oh Oh Like oil in the ocean I couldn't keep to myself Your father was a merchant And I'm a salesman myself See what we have in common Is so easy to find We're wound around each other Like wires and vines Wires and vines Build a shrine to fast goodbyes And we played Sweet Adeline Who should you apologize to? What is there to say? Build a shrine to fast goodbyes And we played Sweet Adeline There's nothing more to apologize for What is there to say? With all the coal in the core All the water and the oil You can buy any girl in the world With the soil that you borrow And the moral you deny You can buy the eyes of the world Better than me (you're better than me) Oh Better than me (you're better than me) Oh Better than me (you're better than me) Oh Oh Oh

Because of Emily Haines, I looked up Mezzo Soprano and tried to make some correlations and see if I could find other musicians with the same "classification" of voice as hers in an effort to experience other musicians which I might also enjoy. I was left unsatisfied. I very much enjoy her voice both in Metric and The Soft Skeleton.

the woman goes to the supermarket to get her medication, probably for a mental illness. she realizes too late that she's missing her money/card to get her prescription and has a panic attack.she obviously needs her medication to help with the panic attacks and other problems but it's just not there. she runs out of the store, pushing everyone away as she runs. the video is a very nice visual for what it feels like to have an isolating mental illness.
