Bear shares his hard earned knowledge and behind the scenes view on the antiques business on the Canadian Prairies. He has been in the business for 34+ years as a professional picker/antiques dealer in Manitoba, Canada. Having had a shop since he was 24, establishing it in 1994, he had been picking antiques and collectibles as a profession since 1989, long before it was a topic of reality TV shows. The majority of his life he has been involved in "junking"/picking/antiquing and otherwise searching for treasures of various kinds, since the age of 7. He also has a passion for re-use, and does sculpture from found/salvaged materials, as well as being a writer. He also has had other additional businesses in the salvage/reuse end of things, and still does some scrap metal recycling on the side.

That looked like fun to me!
As a scrapper, you would have had a ball for sure!
@@bearhardcorepicker absolutely, 100%!
@@scrapitall200 Be assured that all the scrap was valued, though, as that is the owner's retirement project to process and get it all sold. Lots of stuff I didn't film, out of respect for his privacy. Was appreciative he allowed me to film the pick overall.
I’m only halfway through that incredible pick! That sign looked really good for getting dug up! 👍👀👍 Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, it was amazing that it had been underground and remained relatively decent looking!
@@bearhardcorepicker That’s so cool … love a good story👍😎👍
@@Kevscancave If you had seen this property before it was cleaned up you would have been flaberghasted. You couldn't even drive in to it when he first bought it. He's done an amazing job of getting it to that point.
@@bearhardcorepicker sounds like a pick of a lifetime! 🏆👏
@@Kevscancave Just the sort of place I tend to look for, and I've done many like it (and ones much more extreme) over the past 34 years. I'd have had several viral videos if I'd been filming them way back when. I enjoy them, though some can be stressful, and you have to be sensitive to the situations, especially if the person who hoarded the site is still alive. Hoarding is a mental illness, after all. Did one other like it this year, but didn't get to film it, just filmed the resulting purchases. They can hold great potential, depending on the type of items hoarded. In this case, it was a matter of the original owner saving things he felt were of value, and, frankly, he wasn't wrong in many of his choices...but storage conditions, age, and health (etc) all combined to the point where things really got out of control. He did sell things when he was still alive, so it was not a textbook hoarding situatuion where he wasn't willing to get rid of things. I will be trying to film more POV videos of the picks I go on, but folks can tend to be pretty private.
Always enjoy your videos my friend 🙂
Glad you're enjoying them! Thanks for watching!
Very cool watching this unfold. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching! Will be doing another similar video on a rare Aurora figural model kit selling in August that I consinged with Heritage Auctions, also.
those bags are in great condition. amazing you paid full price for the hardware these days with razor think margins. But turns out she threw in some stuff so it must come back around. I bet the primitive table is lightning fast sale. Cool stuff!
Turned out to be some good sets of Edwardian/Victorian dresser handles and other good salable hardware in the crate, so should easily make 8 times what I paid for the lot, though that will be over time, as not all of it will fly out the door. The primitive table did sell right after posting it on Instagram and the dealer who bought it saw it on Facebook.
I wish I had kept my old Tonka trucks from the late 50's to early 60's but the one I miss the most is my Texaco fire truck with the working nozzle.
Glad the video brought back good memories!
This is the stuff I like vintage toys
Gotta like toys!
well shoot...found this video too late. bought a few route 66 signs and a couple oil company signs i thought were originals. got me with the chipping and rusting. now I know...lesson learned. there are a couple names that are running rampant right now. not sure how i could report them. couple names to avoid: Signs77, mojo_1955, collectibl-48, sheilgriffi_86. bought from them the last couple weeks and judging from some examples in this video, they fit squarely in the fake range. bit annoyed, i'm usually more cautious. I'm trying to fill out a mancave/workshop/content creation area so i guess i got auction happy.
Sorry you got stung. You'll now know for next time you encounter the fakes.
wow, the rarest of the aurora lot! I've got the resin one.
Yep! Could be yours, too....auction starts the 23rd of this month! Going to add the link to the description shortly.
Thousand dollars sounds pretty good. It does look like a lot of work.
Expenses were in the $600 or so range, and then factoring in cost of goods, it really made the actual profits slim. So, didnt; really get paid for my work. Good thing I enjoyed the trip. And got some money out of the inventory sio I can use it to buy more....just spent $275 on a big box of vintage toys this afternoon....video coming next week!
Dr Fritz Pollak also invented - Plaskon - Beetle and Melmac plastics. He was the true genius of colored plastics. Baekeland never figured out how to properly color Bakelite as it was a cloudy amber resin.
Thanks for the additonal info!
Catalin was invented in Vienna by Dr Fritz Pollak in 1926. He sold the formulas to the newly created American Catalin Co for $100,000 in 1927.
Thanks for the additional information!
I had that Lost in Space model as a kid. I loved that thing.
It is pretty cool. Thanks for watching!
Good luck on those beauties!
Thanks! Looking forward to the sale!
Thanks for sharing my friend
Thanks for watching!!
Excellent Finds! Best of Luck on them! 👍😎👍
Thanks Kev! Crossing my fingers they go well!
🤔 I probably have over 2000 keys that I found in a old storage unit where someone abandoned their things. Some of the keys in my collection are super old as well, idk if that makes them any more valuable or not.
There are some keys that hold value beyond scrap and crafts/art use. Antique Cash register keys, hand cuff, and round barrel cabinet keys/skeleton keys all hold better value. A house skeleton key I sell for $5 - $7, and cabinet keys about the same or a even a couple bucks more. Happy sorting!
Catalogs are cool to go through. I like the Sears wish catalogs they’re worth a lot of money. I’ll take JCPenney ones also.
Yeah, I coudl leaf through them all day....
Well there you have a lot to figure out what you’re gonna price my favorite course is Coleman lantern inbox
Got most of it priced and out in the shop the day I filmed the video, actually. Need to do that, or I fall behind in processing inventory quickly.... Thanks for watching, Harry!
Awesome finds buddy!
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
I like the old stuff
Ditto!
I like your shop You have a lot of great inventory. I'd love to have my own shop but at my age and in the area I live in it's not a good idea. So I sell on Etsy but li,it myself to smaller items that I can easily ship.
Thanks! I sell a bit on ETSY, but am finding it is declining these past couplel months...
The full Mobil oil tin you'll do well,approximately $50 to $80 piece,other 2 are $25 to $40
I see Wright's is having a Mancave Auction sale online this weekend, I don't know if you bid on some items.. Couple of old Coleman lanterns online... I love Coca Cola,I go crazy when I see Coca Cola or 7 up stuff..
Thanks for sharing my friend 🙂
Bakelite sells quick
I find the cutlery and utensils take awhile, but the other stuff can go quickly.
Wow! Great that Esso lighter is sweet! 👍👀👍
Yeah, I thought it was cool, too!
What’s your thoughts is vintage Christmas caught up to Halloween yet I think it’s getting mighty close
Pretty much neck and neck in popularity, imho.
Bear I can’t give away a rocker I assume at yard sales for 10$ and more than likely either they throw them out or give them the Goodwill
Oddly enough, I sold the rocker on the left just last week. Went to a 85 year old lady, though.
I like John Deere stand and believe it or not. I like those Lee pants. I’m interested to see how much they’re worth.
What pants size are you? :) I'll be investigating value when I have a bit of time to take pics of them and post them in a couple vintage clothing FB groups I'm in...WIll make note of it in a future video.
I’ve gotta believe someone would buy the E.T. puzzle, it’s cool.
Hopefully it will sell! It turned out to be complete, luckily.
Great video as always my friend 🙂
Thanks! And thank-you for watching!

You selling them brotha?
I'm talking to her or whoever right now
You're actually quite likely talking to a guy, not a girl, most likely, and they are 100% a scammer. Stop talking to them, report them to the website you're on, and block them.
Thanks for sharing my friend 🙂

its all cumulative. No giant scores but it still adds to the inventory. Garage sales are fun you never know what you will find. In the midwest in US everything costs .25 cents pretty much, then you go out to Arizona or west coast and the prices are almost more than new retail.
You'll never know until you go whether there will be a true treasure.
Well the Pyrex is nice and clean
Yep, that was at least a plus.
I used to buy and sell enamel signs here in UK 10 years ago.. today I’d say 75% of signs at auction are modern repros and intentional fakes 😂
It's slowly increasing here as well....depends on the auctioneer, though...most auctioneers are being forthright and pointing out upfront the stuff is fake, but there are a few who turn a blind eye to the fact they are consigning fakes and still sell them as old and with a "its auction so its buyer beware, as is, where is" attitude.
You spent to much time on old photos. I waster 40 minutes of my life on it
I’ll take that into consideration next time I get a batch of photos. But, some people want to see such things. Can’t please everyone all the time. I appreciate the view, though.
Try "truest" wishes.
I think you're right!
Great video as always. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Old stuff, pictures, all good stuff. Military stuff usually sells. I’m sure you know that.
Yep! Thanks for watching, Harry!
I know this is a pretty good video but I would be interested in a video showing how to take the handles off the flatware pieces. Thank you!
Unfortuantely, I have yet to find a way to effectively remove the handles from knives, forks, spoons, etc and preserve the handles intact. They are molded on, and with the brittle aspect of Bakeite, they will shatter around that area when forcefully pulled, twisted, etc. Thanks for watching!
@@bearhardcorepicker Oh okay Thank you for responding and letting me know. I will experiment around and see if I can figure it out.
@@skylarmickel If you make any progress, drop me a line or comment here!
That was a good find. I'm still amazed that bakelite is desirable as consumer goods. I've always liked Americana and art deco but I have an unreasonable, irrational bias against bakelite. I think it's just that bakelite looks cheap when used for consumer goods. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder though and the market proves me wrong. You can market those plain little glass bottles to Cosplayers or LARPers as potion bottles if you get cork stoppers for them. Google potion bottle for some stupid prices.
Thanks for the tip! Might have to try some of the plain bottles on Etsy sometime with those keywords...
My grandpa worked on railroad and the family lived in a railroad house …in the early 1940 I’d love the railroad lamp..watch you asking for it
Which one? There were 2, a CPR and a CNR. The CNR now has the correct, embossed CNR globe in it, as I replaced the unmarked one.
@@bearhardcorepicker it don’t matter sweetie either
@@lizgarner2320 The CPR one with the amber globe is $110, the CNR is $85, Canadian $. If you're interested, send me a message to the email address, which is located under the blurb next to the picture of my neon shop sign on the main page.
I think you did very well for $800.00,should be worth $2500 to $5000 for most of items.. I usually don't sell what U.S.A dollars wants,if we live in Canada, I sell in Canadian currency...makes sense...??? Cast Iron Seats can ranges $30 to $40 a piece...Watch $50 in working order, seen a Chinese made pocket watch in Steinbach antique sale,go for $40.. Western Groceries, Coffee tin very scarce, can put any price on it...Farm wrenchs very valuable... Coleman Sunshine lantern with no glass globe sells for $40.. Cast Iron grates $45 to $50 a piece in Winnipeg.. Good pickings my friend
Thanks! I'm thinking in the lower value range, once everything is sold, but that will take awhile. There is a seat there that was worth $285, but being that it is cracked it is more in the $85 range now. Most of the seats are less, and not quick sellers these days. The tin sold quick, as did the nozzle. But the rest will take awhile.
