    As a unofficial honda shadow PR apologist let me just say first, welcome to the shadow family. The more the merrier. Second and this is my opinion backed by years and tens of thousands of miles in sun rain snow and mud with a 99 honda shadow 750. I'll start this off by saying it's one of my favorite motorcycles before i even owned bikes. It was practical. That being said my advice is one of two paths the first being the one that seems more you. Stay stock but refresh everytime. OEM these bikes are dead reliable. OEM parts are cheap robust and easy to install or locate a mechanic who can. My first time having carb issues i had to walk into a shop and hand them a rebuild kit and say please. I didn't have a summer to figure it out. You're gonna want the baffles back in the exhaust if they're already out. They usually are drilled out already. It's a clean bulletproof suburban cruiser. Route number 2, get some combra high flow, stage 2 jet, velocity stack, advance the timing 4 degrees, and if you've got the chain driven model like mine drop your rear sprocket to 36 and the front to 16. (Or just go 38 tooth rear for a more highway usable end result) upgrade the clutch spring, and bam, honda shadow is now a super mean, incredibly lean, city crushing rock and roll machine. My most recent honda shadow 750 I've put 18k miles on in 2 years. Rode all winter last year through the snow and everything.

    the pod filter isnt actually dirty, but the boot of the pod is getting in the way of the holes that the carb has at the mouth. take off the air filter section off of the pod filters and put the boots on youll be able to see that the boot is blocing necessary holes, you can shave it down with a razor or a rotary tool

    Could you possibly put a link to the starter motor rebuild kit you purchased? I might be in the same pickle you are with my bike lol. 😅 I had seen a few people on forums say to be careful which rebuild kit you get cause a lot of them don’t fit without cutting and grinding of bits and bobs.

    Great video! I just want to make sure I’m understating this correctly. In your wiring diagram you mentioned that the positive terminal was used to ground the bike and the negative was used to connect to the relay circuit as well as the starter. Shouldn’t this be vice versa? I’m also referencing the wiring diagram for the same bike. Thank you for the great video!

I cut my teeth on a 440 as well, love that bike and still own it. 440s are a good bike to learn on too as they are very simple, both mechanically and electrically. I've enjoyed the vlog on this bike. Hi Alan, thanks for the video, really interesting. I have a 1978 Z400 which I've bought the same carbs from Mikuni OZ like you (are yours the VM32's?). I live in the UK, but they assured me these would work fine. I've had the same issues you've had from the super random idle (running frantically high or too low), and my throttle cable didn't fit correctly either. I never knew that it was supposed to fit inside the brass nut!! Thanks for your insight, it's helped me realise what I need to do to get mine running. Love your paint job also. Really nice looking bike.

  • @Alanathome
    @Alanathome2 ай бұрын

    Hey Grant! Yes mine are the vm32. They are quite finicky aren't they! I've found that the supplied jets will normally be pretty close to perfect. If your rpms are all over the place, then it's most likely installation error! I'm glad that this vid helped you out! Let me know if you run into any issues!

    Good to see the Honda Shadow VT750. Honda factory seats are universal and are uncomfortable. An Air Hawke cushion is an option. the air cushion can also give you height depending how much air is pumped into them. My old 2005 Shadow retired in 2014 after many years of daily commuting, it needs a lot of gaskets and TLC. I like the note on your exhaust, what pipes are you running on your Shadow?

  • @Alanathome

  • @Alanathome

In the end you managed to put everything perfectly back together and made the KZ run again. I have the same bike, same exhaust, and you're right: riding that bike on a beautiful day is just a joy. And as much as I hate to admit it, I'm starting to really love the obnoxiously excessive noise level. #guiltypleasure Also you were talking about the comfort level of the cruiser vs. sport riding positions. Make sure you take note of how vastly improved your field of view is when you're in that more upright riding position. You'll take in a lot more of the scenery.

    Nice work. I have an 82 KZ440. Took me time to adjust my carburetor. Starts up fine in the warm weather but definitely need to use the choke more often in colder weather. Question, what did you do to have aftermarket turn signals work properly? I can’t figure that out.

  • @Alanathome
    @Alanathome2 ай бұрын

    I tried LED signals and didn't have much luck. The current blinkers I have are halogen and they were a direct plug and play. I might have had to do a bit of soldering.
