    How do you know when to stop cutting a side?

  • @SageAndNettle
    @SageAndNettleКүн бұрын

    Great question! I can set a height on the mast which will help to cut a side almost to where it needs to be, though there is definitely a bit of eyeballing to make sure it's perfectly lined up. Cutting, checking, adjusting, cutting some more, until it's just right 😊

    Thanks so much! That one is a Serpentinite, which is a combination of several of the serptentine minerals (like chysotile and lizardite). Up close it has a really cool green and black scaly texture to it, hence the name, haha! 😂 It's on my to-be-cut list, and I think it'll make a beautiful D20 once it's finished.😊

    I like that you include a bit of the geography behind the stone. I was sad as Hedron did that less and less. I may be alone in this, but I'd just about die if I could get like a full geography/geology lesson during the making of. For me, it's not just about watching the process of faceting the die, but learning about what makes it unique. Every stone tells a story, and I want that story.

    Thanks so much! Geology is actually one of my weaker areas of knowledge, so it's incredibly fun to get to research each stone that I cut and learn about them! I just love having something where I get to continue to learn every day. 😊

    I appreciate you showing the transfer process where you retain the indexing of the stone during the process (angled parts at the ends of the dop sticks). I had been wondering how that was retained, and now I know! Those angles have to be precisely kept between sides of faceting. This is more than seeing the final product, but seeing the process to get there. "Journey before destination." :)

  • @SageAndNettle
    @SageAndNettle10 күн бұрын

    Absolutely! The transfer jig is definitely an essential piece of equipment. Without it, it would be nearly impossible to line the second half of the stone up properly. So many small little steps that all together add up to something beautiful! Journey before destination! 😁

  • @aaryngulledge5681

    Great recovery from a bad fracture during cutting. How do you gauge how much to sandblast each face during that process? Is it just a certain count in your head while exposing each face, and is that only a few seconds or a bit longer? Excellent work! Keep it up!!

  • @SageAndNettle
    @SageAndNettle10 күн бұрын

    Thank you!! It depends a lot on the hardness of the stone. I just blast the first one in slowly, checking frequently, until it reaches the depth I want. I keep a mental count as I go so I can get a baseline of what the others will need, then just replicate that. I usually have to take it out and look over everything a few times, redoing some of the numbers, until it's where I want it. 😊

    Absolutely gorgeous result! Do you plan to also do other dices besides D20s?

  • @SageAndNettle
    @SageAndNettle10 күн бұрын

    Thank you! I've done other dice in the past, but making whole sets comes with a suite of new challenges. The first major hurdle is sourcing enough of the same type and style of stone to make a whole set, which can be difficult to ensure. Additionally, cutting seven dice takes seven times as long. This is fine, but it pushes the price out of many peoples affordable range. I may make more full sets in the future, but for now I'll be sticking mostly to just D20's. 😊

    Can you stabilze the cracks, maybe by letting cyanoacrylate seep into them before cutting the faces?

  • @SageAndNettle
    @SageAndNettle11 күн бұрын

    Yes! It's a skill I've been needing to learn since I have a few really nice stones that aren't suitable for cutting currently. You can submerge the stones into some very thin CA glue and place that into a pressure pot and it will push it deep into all the cracks and stabilize the stone. Just need to get the right CA glue and a pressure pot, then I'll definitely be doing this for some of my stones. 😊

    Thanks so much! To be honest, it's not the most affordable hobby to get into. I saved up for a long time to be able to get started, but I had my heart set on the Ultra-Tec V5 faceting machine. The faceting machine alone was $5,600 but all in I was about 9-10k before I cut my first stone. However, you could always get a cheaper machine or search for a used one on facebook marketplace (though be warned they can still be very pricey).

  • @SageAndNettle
    @SageAndNettle14 күн бұрын

    Great question! It depends a lot on what you are cutting, and on which lap. I cut a lot of quartz family stones, which wears out my rougher laps (the 120 and 240) pretty quickly. I end up replacing them every 2 or 3 stones, or whenever I feel them start to slow down. Luckily the topper laps are only $10-20 each.

    This is a beautiful piece. I wish the numbers were gold for the Ali Baba and his treasure deep in the pitiless desert. Or reddish brown for the spice blows of Arrakis. I feel like white (however much more legible it is) was a missed opportunity

  • @SageAndNettle
    @SageAndNettle15 күн бұрын

    Both of those are really good suggestions! I just felt that the gold would have blended in with the browns and tans too much, and would make legibility a bit difficult.
