Don't the greedy companies owners realise God will Judge them? They'd better repent now, and do the right thing. Treat other people as you would like to be treated yourself! Jesus is Lord!

The supply chain from the source of cobalt to the apple iPhones and Tesla EV is so convoluted that companies can have deniability.

It is much cheaper and more effecient for a mining company to extract Cobalt by using bulldozers , excavators and huge trucks and employ 20 men to operate them . What you see in this video is thousands of men and boys being paid $4 per day which adds up to a bigger cost than using trucks and machinery. This is not cheap labor. The Congo government stipulates manual labor is used and they are paid $4 per day. $4 goes a long way in the Congo unlike America where $4 buys you nothing.

We should not have given up the Congo as a colonial state. We could have saved a lot of money for Belgium. Especially now that those raw materials are highly sought after in the energy transition.

Europe is responsible of this poverty and hunger.because they looted rich resources of these countries. They killed colonel kaddafi president of lybia who was well wisher of Africa. Nato forces destroyed irrigation systems of lybia.they killed millions of muslims in iraq and Afghanistan for rich resources.

Horrible, especially when u know how much money they are pulling out of these mines! These companies all provide big promises they never deliver on. Commitments and compensation should not be handled by village elders but by lawyers who would get these things in writings. Their needs to be guarantees and penalties for failures written into contracts. I bet for 200k they could have provided really nice houses and a school for these people.

Afrika has cursed itself through failure to educate ourselves, failure to make the thieves that we ourselves vote into power accountable, religion and other foolish self imposed boundaries. So until we give ourselves right-knowledge we'll never know the value of the Afrikan resources.

although it is deplorable that countries be robbed of their natural resources, and that work be conducted in appalling conditions, the assertion that DRC's poverty derives from greedy companies taking away riches and leaving nothing behind simply does not stand scrutiny. Take 100,000 tons of cobalt at 50,000 usd/ton. That is 5 billion dollars. Plus 1 million tons of ore with 30% copper contents at 9,000 dols per refined ton we get 3 billion dollars. Plus say 2 billion dollars of diamonds, that is 10 billion dollars. That is all the country exports! In short, nothing. Zero. That is close to the declared value, namely 8 billion. Add a little timber. In comparison with a middle income country of similar population, Mexico exports 500 billion dollars per year. This gives a first indication: the country produces hardly anything at all. In other words, productivity is close to zero. Looking at figures for agriculture, which is 50% of GDP, same situation. They hardly produce anything either. And why is this? Simply because the country has been run by bands of gangsters that just filled their pockets and established oppresive dictatorial regimes. In such an environment, there is no investment, no accumulation of capital, hence no productivity gains. Corruption is detestable, buy no rule of law is more damaging. One could rightly say that both go hand in hand, and it is true. There is the possibility of building several huge hydroelectric dams on the mighty Congo river. There is nothing in the world that remotely compares. Yet nobody in his sound mind would dream of sinking some 100 billion dollars in such a madhouse, risking being confiscated any day of the week. Only a small minority of African or Congolese households have electricity. They simply could not afford ten dollars per month for the service. DRC is poorer today than what it was under Belgian colonial rule 60 years ago.

The introduction states that this mining company is owned by the Congolese state. The rest of the programme refers to "the mining company" as though some foreign entity were to blame for the poverty in which the people live ... but "the mining company" is the Congolese state/government ...

Thank you very much for the educating video. It is hard to contemplate the idea that a decision made by an elected government of a democratic country, elected by the majority of the people can be overruled by an outside entity and by undemocratic means. It is, indeed, required that we have a new system. A system that would not only regard corporate interest but also and more importantly, regard public interest.
