1975-1977 My last duty station was North Island San Diego. My husband did his last couple years on the aircraft carrier USS Constellation. I had seen these aircraft carriers in port and they are huge. But you don't really understand how huge until you are actually on one out at sea. January 1977 I went on a "Dependents' Cruise" with my husband on the Connie before they went out on their next deployment. They had the nets up around the deck just in case somebody accidentally tipped over the side. The jets did flybys which were LOUD. He took me around to see his work space and meet his commanding officer and other staff. Those things are confusing if you don't know how to navigate those stairs and passageways. When I was on the flight deck I would NOT go anywhere near the edge. Stood mostly smack in the middle. I don't like deep water. I'm okay if I can touch the bottom but there was NO touching the bottom out there.

The ship design for the Constillation class of FF's is the Italian design of the Fremm frigates. The design includes a 5in/127mm main gun but the "smarter people" in the US Navy procurement group only want a 57mm bore main gun, the same main gun that is on the LCS (little crappy ships). Get ready for extreme cost over-runs and delivery delays.

Bremerton is Nimitz' home port. But they store mothballed ships there before sent to Brownsville, TX. I think technically the Everett base about an hour north is the 'active' base that Nimitz is officially ported, but Bremerton is where the yard is. You can see in this video all the work going on.

We need ten thousands of these ships just to protect our Texas from Mexican illegals. Another 20 thousand to protect Florida beaches. And 50 thousands more to patrol the Gulf of Mexico. The price of freedom and liberty isn't free. End school lunches and close public libraries to fund these ships!

When I arrived at N.O.B. in Norfolk in1969, only a year out of High School, I rolled up the pier & got my first glimpse of the Ships docked there. They looked like buildings floating in the water. I am 73 years old & that memory is still fresh in my mind. Every kid needs to get up close to a Navy vessel, at least once in his or her life, to appreciate the sheer magnitude of these colossal structures.
