This being my favourite Gabriel song as well...was quite interesting. I have heard this song thousands of times since the release and never once would I have thought to isolate them to hear what they sounded like. Thank you for doing so. They sound phenomenally better with the music and layering.

I never noticed this on my cassette copy, but when I purchased the CD boxed set and listened to it, I thought that maybe the cd had a glitch until I quickly realized what the sound actually was. I can't hear it very well, if at all, on these youtube clips, but it's definitely "in your face" when listening to a CD. They should rename the song "Got WD40?".

That squeek was only really audible with the digital remasters. I think they kept it in because they did not expect anyone to hear it due to all of the heavy midrange and the hiss of the needle on the vinyl record. And they were right. No'-'one noticed for decades. What surprised me even more was hearing the same squeek on Houses of tbe Holy and Prescence! He never bothered oiling that kick pedal for about five years! LOL

Many don't know this, but Queen weren't really the biggest band of the 70s and they sure weren't the biggest band of the 80's. The movie about them was over hyped to make them look bigger than they were. They just created one impact, and that was at Live Aid, but after that they continued being a pedestrian band in the 80s. They weren't as big as Dire Straits, Duran Duran, U2 and Tears for Fears in the 80's or were they as big as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and The Who in the 70's.

This week was NOT their most impressive collective week on the Billboard singles chart. A few weeks after this they had 7 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 simultaneously (IIRC 4 of the 7 were in the Top 20). It was all five songs mentioned here plus 2 more (Mike+The Mechanics 'Taken In' and Howard Jones 'No One Is To Blame' which featured Phil Collins as producer/drummer/harmony vocalist).

It was a project produced by Geoff Downes (Yes/Asia) and featured both Steve Howe (Yes) and Steve Hackett (Genesis) in a collaborative writing, recording, and performing partnership. Unfortunately, it was very short lived, but yielded a hit single and some decent tracks. "The Hunter" is another good track from that album.
