    hello Steve. I am from Germany and my mother lenguage is German. As hangglider pilot I always ask to my self how is it correctly written ? Hang gliding or hanggliding. as verb I see you write to go hangglide. Is it correct to write I go for hagglinding. Or is is correct to write I go for hang gliding. That's my question.

    My rigid wing (Atos B-V) nil-wind, high altitude landings improved massively when i started landing with little to no flaps on. Blasphemy, I know. But my sites landing zones are all above 8,000' msl usually with light and variable winds. Video with tips on my channel for high elevation rigidophiles. If I had thicker air and / or wind, I would use the flaps for landings.

    You make it looks so easy. Thx. for the video. I have had an incidence where i came in fast and tried to turn and it clipped my wings edge and slammed. After that i am very careful in landing in tight spots. How high do you recommend that you do your final turn for the landings?

    Hi Thomas. I think with flaps off around about 36 mph ish in straight and level flight with thermal flap 15 degree about 26 ish straight and level. I got to be honest I don't use the asi I normally feel what the glider is doing and fill the air speed. Although. say like all the atos vr's look the same they do fly a little different especially depending on your wing loading harness etc. Just have to practice and learn your wing. One thing I really notice when I changed my harness is making sure that all your weight goes through the hang point.not having any body weight on your arms when on the uprights (down tubes)this results in Less pitch control and makes it more difficult to pull speed especially in stronger winds( less leverage over the nose) You do get a lot of feel or feed back through the hang loop and tend to have a lighter grip on the uprights which which ends up being a more relaxed confident landing tecnique.     That climb is crazy amazing! I've watched a ton of hang glider videos and I've never seen any that climbed anywhere near this fast. Just wow!

    Kinda funny, really. A pilot with expensive gear reverting back to his H-1 rating approach tactics and saying that 'this' is how you do 'it.' Come on. Sure, transitioning to DTs at altitude works barely well enough when on far-approach in non-active conditions, with perfectly flat, big, well-groomed landing field options. But isn't that what you where initially taught when you where barely an H-1? Your flying skills and tactics (and wing!) have advanced.... why have your landing tactics remained at a beginner's level?! Why don't you use the control bar for controlling the glider when entering the second-most critical stage of the flight?! Remain on the control bar until you are in ground effect. Too many pilots have been seriously F'd -up because they become 'concerned' about the conditions and then transition at altitude, only to be ballooned by a releasing bubble or find themselves in an uncontrolled attitude by an ill wind gradient. They believe they are 'safer' when transitioning at altitude. Bull pucky. Start flying like an advanced pilot rather than a frightened H-1 beginner.

    Superb landing, nicely done. I had only one landing on my new VQ so far, and I pushed out too late - but, to be fait, it was a zero-wind day... Hopefully I'll be in the UK this Summer to come fly the south ! Happy landings, Steve

    Thanks for the comments not been out recently to much working. Now Have a better camera and mic set up Hope to get out next flyable day. Did miss a few things out on this vid. Talking (meaningful dialogue)whilst doing definitely takes a bit of practice. Smooth conditions are a perfect time to practise your tecnique and approaches great for building confidence and will improve your whole flying experience. Practicing in smooth air allows you to feel your glider particularly through wind gradient and ground affect and getting to know where your flare window is for your glider. It is a good time for checking trim speed and harness set up,at the end of the day ever pilot gets it wrong ever now and then. But with good tecnique and loads of practice it will more than likely be a non event . I always aim for the perfect tippy toe landing if it ends up not being that I'll work out the mistake so to keep on top my tecnique. Consistently landing well is definitely a skill that has to learned and lots of practice is the only way so don't waste those average soaring days.

    Yep Steve I agree with everything the guys below are saying , Great vid , smooth landing . I recently had a bad landing , took out my downtubes hence me watching this . You are right ,m its all about the speed , keep the glider level and time the flare . Thanks again ;for this . cheers

    I like to be on base tube all the way until ground effect and carry lots of speed into my final. I don't get on the uprights until glider goes neutral so I have best control authority.

    @@JonMcG I uploaded a landing compilation as most of the new pilots at the clubs I fly mostly ask about my landing technique. It seems a bit counterintuitive to be on base tube for so long but the authority and more importantly the feedback one gets from the glider is 2nd to non. The uprights don't give me enough feedback or so I feel. :)

    Nice climb out! Pretty cool to see how the ridged wing adjusts during the climb to the rate. One of those things I'm envious about with my flex wing. Thanks for sharing!

    Nice landings. Looks like not terribly active conditions though. May I suggest that for better airspeed and control in active conditions, fly into ground effect (GE) all the way on the control bar rather than transition to the down tubes (DT) so early at altitude. Then, within GE where turbulence is likely much less, transition to the DT's, and the rest is simple. Too many pilots have very bad habits transitioning early to the DT's while at altitude (as seen here) where any thermal or unseen dusty (or corn devil) will be able to wrest control from the pilot. A pilot has much less control on the DT's compared to the amount of control afforded on the control bar. Try it next time...it will give you much more confidence and control in rough conditions. It's also a good thing to practice smooth, efficient transitions at altitude long before your approach so that you know you can smoothly find the DT's when in GE without getting your hands tangled in the aft wires. :)

    I do exactly that :) as a matter of fact I was just sharing that that's how I land. For me being on base gives the most feedback and I don't go on uprights/DT until the glider doesn't go neutral.
