Oh dear... The handwaving away of the destruction by Sutekh was so annoying. It's yet another reset like S3 Last of the Timelords. Taking Sutekh for walkies in the time vortex... My favourite things about this two parter have been the acting from Bonnie Langford, Gabriel Woolf and Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson. Not boring like series 11 finale but disappointing and a waste of the talent involved. I have enjoyed Unleashed, more than the stories at times. The resources available are well-used by the talented production team but they are not being given engaging stories. I wish I could work out why, I think there needs to be other writers involved particularly in such a short season. I only enjoyed 73 Yards and Rogue and bits of the other stories except Space Babies which was risible. It was never boring, but for me so much of season 40 or series 14 just didnt land. I wanted to enjoy this series but just felt meh for much of it.

I think as Who fans we do overanalyse and I've tried to be positive. The acting, direction and production values have been excellent. There is still nothing like it on television. I think part of my problem is ennui, I've seen it all before. There is so much content out there after 60 years, Dr Who's format has renewal and change built in. This is not EastEnders. I wonder what younger fans think about it. Dr Who is my programme and I will always watch, just to see what happens next. That juxtaposition of the ordinary and fantastic is what makes it special. Here's to the Christmas special.

Had more plot holes than a finale I've ever seen. Seriously they should have had Sutekh latch onto the Tardis on Wild Blue Yonder. It would have completely made sense...too bad it didnt make the cut of "the one who waited" when he only waited 7 episodes before revealing himself. And seriously there are so many points in the Doctor's history where Sutekh's cover would have blown. Pandorica, Trenzalore and most recently the doubling of the Tardis at the end of the Giggle. What was RTD thinking? All credence of seriousness lost when the Doctor retook control so easily with just a whistle. Lol Sutekh has a physical form he cant just phase? RTD should have gone Avengers infinity war style and end the episode with the 14th Doctor dying and have him try to pair with the 15th and close the loop of 14 hanging around...and he is still going to hang around like a foul odor whenever a world ending event is on the cards

In general, I enjoyed the episode but the short season definitely struck the pacing hard. I think we should have had an episode earlier in the season that explored the tape and the time window but ended with the entity around the TARDIS but not the knowledge of what b it was. The rest of the episodes could have happened as they do currently, except with that undercurrent of concern over who ruby's mother is (building the importance they place on that information) and what's wrong with/ what's on the TARDIS. Then the 2 part finale should have kicked off with the unit visit and suteck reveal before ending with the dust clouds of death. Then the introduction of the random women who survived but was forgetting would be the open for the 2nd part. The thing about ruby's parents being no one in particular doesn't bother me too much because it kinda plays into a part of doctor who lore that's been shown through different doctors - that no one is more important than just a regular human but I never felt that the doctor was putting a huge effort into finding out about ruby's mum, other than the TARDIS scan. I think in general everything worked, just maybe not in the order it was placed.

Bit big headed of The Doctor to think he's a God of life, when the ONLY person he's saved ln season one is the bad guy in Space Babies. I notice across the breadth of the internet with nearly all DW review epsiodes what people like are often the characters, effects and build ups. However, rarely is anyone satisfied witth the narrative and surely that is the most important necessity to telling a great story. By the way things DW needs to get rid of... 1. Sonic screwdriver 2. Sonic sunglasses 3. Magic rope 4. Magic gloves 5. Excess of characters with no development 5. Cop out endings 6. Overt emotions. DW is not a soapie or certainly shouldn't be 7. Remove all the WOKE and preaching at audiences 8. Disney (yes even if that means no more Who) 9. Shift the emphasis on CGI. It shouldn't be the priority everyone gives it. and need to do 1. Answer mysteries with good narrative solutions 2. Bring back proper scifi 3. Explain 14. He has to die. A Doctor on Earth retired and not helping out. A shocking lazy we don't care aprroach from RTD 4. Make it British 5. Change Unit back into a secretive organsiation (near impossible now I would say) 6. Give the show a rest or alternatively have 13 episode seasons. It needs time out. Best thing about this reboot: Millie Gibson.

Ruby's mother reveal was very disappointing and a waste of 8 episodes. Her mother being a ordinary person should have been revealed in the Christmas Special instead of taking 8 episodes. It's totally pointless that a story arc spread over 8 episodes is about a mystery woman who turns out to be a nobody in the Doctor Who universe. The reveal could have been done in just one episode.....the Christmas special because the message would still be there and the message is ordinary people can be heros too. Its ridiculous its took 8 episodes to get that message across to viewers.

I hate to say I’m disappointed. I love doctor who. Love Ncuti Gatwa. Love RTD (Did). But this just isn’t hitting. The plots move so fast and are so cluttered. Having 8 episodes allows for them to skip over things which hurts the character and peoples relationship with them. It just feels smaller. I feel like they are trying to rely on bringing old charters back to create character stakes. But then everyone survives. I think Ncuti is a great actor but for some reason his acting seems bad at times ( I think this is a directing issue tbh and the way the cinematography is handled these days - very soft modern ). I feel like for that story to feel so big, as big as they made the villain, it need to be at least 3 episodes. Or have sutekh show up a few times/more direct hints towards him. Also the doctor cried every episode. It’s not unusual for the doctor to cry and I have no issue with that. But it looses the depth in my opinion. It looses its weight if he cries every episode. Like when David or Matt cried it hit hard as he didn’t often show emotion like that. Yes I understand this doctor said to the 14th to feel things more. But I feel this was too much. Or am I being insensitive lol ? I feel like he’s been too humanised, he fits in too well. If that makes sense. It’s like someone in a period piece but you know they’ve seen an iPhone 😂

I agree with most of your points. I was extremely disappointed because I love Sutekh; he is one of my favorite villains. I enjoy reading about his lore in books and other media. I was very excited for the last episode, but now I feel angry. It had so much potential for me, but it fell completely flat and didn't make much sense. In the past, Sutekh was said to be able to kill everything in the universe with just a thought and that it was impossible to have him at full power bc the story would end before it began and this was by one of the original creators, so having him appear weakened compared to the Toymaker and Maestro doesn't make sense. Also, the idea of him being attached to the TARDIS the whole time doesn't add up. What about the times the TARDIS "died" in other episodes, like with the Tenth Doctor in the other universe or with the Eleventh Doctor when it exploded and slowly died at his grave? Why wouldn't the Doctor have detected Sutekh's presence if UNIT did a quantum scan? As for Ruby, I understand your point, but I would have preferred it to be something more interesting than just a regular person who we suddenly believe to be important. Originally, she wasn't important, so why wouldn't Sutekh, the god of gods, know who she was? The only time she was important was when they looked back at her in the time window. This episode felt like a cluttered mess. It followed an amazing episode only to fall flat. I'm just very disappointed because I was so excited for this.

The episode would have no doubt been better with him in and dying somewhat later than everyone else (maybe he tries to save 15 or Donna). Too bad having Donna and Melanie both together would have been too much? Maybe throw in a joke when Tennant finds out his Tardis is secretly a doghouse. But this finale was no worse or more plot-holey than anything conjured up in the Eccleston/Tennant/Smith/Capaldi eras.

I'm still gathering my thoughts, but overall, I'm a bit split on this finale. On the one hand, I did like that Ruby's parents were actually just normal humans, but on the the other hand, it seems like a bit of a cop out. I mean, I can buy the bit about Sutekh only believing her mum was important because Ruby and the Doctor believed as much... But, we were shown certain elements throughout the entire season that have to do with Ruby's very nature or origins (like you've said, things like the snow, the carol song, the Doctor's memory of that night changing etc), which were meant to lead us to believe that she wasn't exactly a normal human.. And those things were never actually explained, which is a bit disappointing. We did get a few mentions of 73 Yards, more than I was expecting tbh, but.. They didn't exactly make this better, since again, it wasn't actually explained or important to the overall mystery. Like, it's cool that the TARDIS perception filter apparently works from that same distance, and nice touch that Ruby sort-of remembers what happened to her in the alternate timeline, but it wasn't actually important and didn't lead to anything in the end. I thought the Memory TARDIS being used and explained some more was very cool, and I also liked the idea of Sutekh latching onto the TARDIS all the way back in the 4th Doctor's era and being around for this entire time. I also loved the apocalyptic vibe of the episode, seeing the universe destroyed again was very reminiscent of Flux, but in a very cool way.. I especially liked the sequence with Mel, and the idea of memory itself dying; and also loved the Doctor's reaction to the death wave and his scene with the random kind lady. However, I do wish the solution in the end, was a bit better than just... Dragging Sutekh through the time vortex with a bit of rope. Like, I'm not really sure how or why that even worked lol. I don't have a problem with it being silly solution, as it is DW after all.. But I mean, in the internal logic of the show itself, what even made the Doctor realise that it would work? Or, if he knew all along that it could, why did he need to wait so long until so many planets were destroyed before trying it? It seemed like a bit of an oversight. Script-wise, it was a last-minute solution that reminded me of the Last of the Time Lords ending, which I think we all know is considered RTD's worse for a reason. It seems like whenever RTD gives us very high stakes, he forgets to think of a way out and consider an actual solution until the very last second, and then there's not enough screen time left to actually construct one that makes sense within the narrative, so he just finds the quickest easy fix he can and sticks with it. I liked the idea of an ending scene with the Doctor and Ruby, but honestly, the season wasn't long enough and didn't give us enough of them together, for me to buy that they have such a deep, unbreakable bond. It made their goodbye feel a bit overdramatic, but IDK.. maybe it's just me. I am happy that Ruby is coming back for S2, cause I do like Millie and her dynamic and chemistry with Ncuti, I just could have honestly done without the scene of them saying goodbye, or maybe replaced it with a more lighthearted one where they just decide that Ruby should have a break and stay with her family for a while. Oh, and the Mrs. Flood bit didn't bother me as it's clearly a set-up for the next season. Basically, I loved the vibe of the episode, I liked a lot of the character moments we got, the acting and emotional stakes.. But the script itself in terms of the mystery and overall plot, was a bit of a let down sadly.

So, UNIT hires high school kids now? If I recall, isn't Rose supposed to be about 16?

I did really enjoy it and I think there’s a lot more to be revealed in the next episode. But I think we might feel the same, in that the wrap up might change how I view this one. If they mess up the landing I might look back on it more negatively. I kinda seen the Harriet thing coming a mile off but that didn’t bother me

I think RTD is following an MCU/anime style of storytelling. Where they set checkpoints up but are ultimately leading to the 'even bigger big bad.' Part one was always going to have a lot of filler but I think it will helo the grand story-telling in the end. Sutekh is like the first boss fight for the Doctor but there's bigger threats coming.

Fantastic episode pal, a true Doctor Who episode. Real Doctor Who fans enjoyed it, especially those fans of a certain age. It a 2 part finale pal, the journey will finish next week, not everything in life has instant gratification but you young, this was def aimed at older fans buddy 👍

I've seen all of it and grown up with it all my life. If age is your only argument its a pretty weak argument

@@TheNerdyBrit not age, generation, you seem to be stumped by multiple stories in 1 episode, the frustration of not knowing the answers straight away and character arcs. It not you personally it just how you have perceived media these days. 👍

You have to treat two partners as one story treating them as one episode is u fair I’m personally loving it so far

Glad you enjoyed it, I get its a 2 parter but not only can I only review what's in front of me, but I specifically felt the parts that are setup were its weakest elements

i do really like the reveal because it was sort of leading to it being Susan and then it pivoted, also this and the toymaker stuff helps to link the classic era and the modern era which i rather like. still curious about what is going on with mrs flood and the Ruby's mother stuff so there is stuff still being built to. only thing i would have liked for the series itself is a few more episodes like they mentioned two people Susan triad had been but we haven't seen so why not just have those episodes to build the mystry and establish more of a bond with the Doctor and Ruby. Also i was left wondering where Shirley the unit advisor was because i don't really see why switching her out for Morris with no explantion was needed. but overall a solid RTD part one of a series finale

It was very much a setting up episode, however for me at least, from the time window scene to the end I was on the edge of my seat. Probably the most I've been engaged with an episode. I think if the series was longer, this would have been a perfect first part of a 3 part finale, just to give Sutekh and all the mysteries time to breathe. The only negative thing I'd say is once again the pacing was a bit off in the first half, fast then slow then fast again.
