    I've been playing guitar for nearly 60 years and I still have not mastered Travis picking. And the most disheartening thing is while like this guy most players use all their fingers, Merle Travis did it using only his thumb and one finger.

    It appears that "Aunt Mandy" was Amanda Bowling Bailey (1883-1972) She was born to Jason Walker Bowling and Catherine Bowling. The Unamed 92 year old sister from the newspaper article appears to be Margaret Bowling Garrison (1873-1974)

    At 1:38 his guitar plucks a chord after his hand's left the guitar. I imagine that this clip's been mimed for a TV show. We used to see this sort of thing here in the UK in the 1960s on 'Top of the Pops'.

  • @Quimiqua
    @Quimiqua4 күн бұрын

    @donaldkrech8146 @gam1471 This performance is from a full length movie called 'John Lair's Renfro Valley Barn Dance'. The majority of the film presented a scripted version of the show that took place every Saturday night in Renfro Valley. They used a mix of live footage shot at an actual Saturday night barn dance show, mixed with footage shot when no audience was present. Some of the audio was live recorded and matches the performances - some was recorded at a different time and edited in to match (roughly). According to Pete Stamper in his book, the filmmakers went to great lengths to hide microphones, cords, speakers, etc. (with the exception of the part of the film which showed the Sunday morning radio show). Stamper's appearance was filmed at the Saturday night live show. He had a microphone under his shirt, and the cable for it ran under his clothes, out the bottom of his pant leg, and off the stage and out of sight. He recalled how odd he looked trying to walk out on stage with a wire running down his leg. Stamper's vocal on his song seems to sync up quite well with the video - but again, you see no cords on the guitars. Some performances seem obviously 'live' (like Pleaz Mobley singing 'Pretty Polly'), while some which appear live at first (like Al Ballinger & The Bluegrass Drifters doing 'Alabam') but are actually composites of two different performances. (Watch the banjo player's shirt!)

  • @Quimiqua

    Thank you for the comment. There's a story in the Lexington paper from when the movie came out in 1966 that says she was "an 84-year-old five string 'banjer-picker' and singer who occasionally throws in a few dance steps authentic of the folk culture of the Appalachians". It mentions she was one of the "Feudin' Baileys", but the only place I've found that phrase anywhere at all is in the big newspaper ad that ran in different papers when the movie was released. I'm guessing the group she appeared with in the film (Old Joe Clark, Clarence Walls, Ralph Marcum) must have been called the Feudin' Baileys, but probably after the fact - maybe in attempt to capitalize on the perceived popularity of feuding hillbillies. There is nothing in the movie, or the credits, that mention the 'Feudin' Baileys. The article also mentions that the dress Aunt Mandy wears in the movie was made by her 92-year-old sister, who stayed up nearly all night finishing it so she could wear it for the filming the next day. That's about all I know at this point. I really like that 'Five Miles to Town' if you're the same guy. When did you play on the Barn Dance?

  • @Quimiqua

    Not Grandpa Jones - that's Old Joe Clark! He was a featured performer on the Renfro Valley Barn Dance from the late 1940s onward. He also appeared on the Opry in the early '50s, and toured with Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys around the same time.

    lha3954 It's from a feature length film made about the Renfro Valley Barn Dance in 1965. The full title of the movie is 'John Lair's Renfro Valley Barn Dance in Eastman Color'. There was a soundtrack LP released which contains audio of some of the performances featured in the film. @bluegrassman3040, you are correct - it is from Renfro Valley. But it is also from a movie. 🌞 Some of the performances were filmed during the regular Saturday night barn dance show (which would have aired on the radio), others were filmed at different times over a week (or so) in the summer of 1965.
