  I remember it being "..began to pray," in about 1967. But other people, like my g/f, told me it was " pretend" . She also told me that it was "the peacher came to call," i.e. the preacher made visits to his parishioners to talk about their troubles.... advising him to stay, forget about California work on life here. Still doesn't add up. But the song did express what was so big on the minds of so many young people then - much like Scott McKenzie's "San Francisco" : the idea that life back home was worthless and California was where it was happening and there you will find your destiny, come to know the purpose and meaning of life... or at the least, get high a lot and have sex with a lot of hippie chicks. Some of my age-mates made it there and some of them lived the life that was there waiting for them. Some became disillusioned and felt the Dream was just a dream and the cruel world is real. I did get there, in 1971. ANd of course it was over by then. The "Dream" had burst its bubble. People were still trying to pretend or to be hip or to capture what they still believed was supposed to be happening ; or they were trying to put things back together to re-creat a semblance of what was before, as they imagined it; and some became mature and went to work to make the world a better place. Not making judgement here, just sayin'.

  Whoever transcribed the lyrics just doesn't know his English grammar. It cannot be "pretend" because then the tense doesn't match "got" just before that, and therefore it doesn't refer to the same time. On the other hand, "began" matches "got" (both simple past). For the transcriber's version to make any sense, it would have to go _"pretended_ to pray".
