I worked with Lou Donaldson....he helped Grant get a recording with Blue Note. I heard all the stories while we toured Spain, I worked with Palmer wile I was at Ft.Bragg. Clarence shared a few stories. Lou and Lonnie told me they preferred IGrant over all others and more. I was lucky to hear true stories not sugar coated from non clones !

Viva a nossa cultura brasileira!

I always thought that Nat's early and signature piano style was very Roaring 20s ish! I think that that's what gives Nat's piano playing style its pizzazz, glare and exitement! Nat King Cole and many of his swinging contemporaries were the long shadow that the Roaring 20s cast.

ENOURMOUS respect for piano prowess and Tatum/Oscar-style flourishes, however, to stray so far from the beauty, simplicity and gentleness of the melody of this tune is unnerving. With so few 'melodists' among us any more ie. Mancini, Irving Berlin, Lerner and Loewe, Bronislaw Kaper, Johnny Mandel, Neil Hefty et al, our world needs to be reintroduced to these geniuses more gently; their 'gifts' to us get lost in the self-indulgence.

I'm happy that we have so many videos and recordings of Roy, which brings me great joy. To think how he left us far too early brings me sadness tempered by a still-strong sense of disbelief. It's like he's on tour in Heaven, with the rest of our Jazz Gods, but he'll be back.
