House of SpeakEasy

House of SpeakEasy

House of SpeakEasy is a home for close encounters of a literary kind, a place where authors and audiences come together in innovative ways. Founded in 2013 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, SpeakEasy is dedicated to the idea that literature matters, and that the essence of literary culture is the relationship between writers and their readers. To foster that relationship, SpeakEasy brings authors out from behind the book, lectern, or screen into direct contact with readers to stimulate the audiences (and authors) of tomorrow by exposing them to the best writing of today.
SpeakEasy's flagship program is "Seriously Entertaining," a monthly series featuring acclaimed authors and thinkers who are invited to take the stage to riff and ruminate informally on that evening’s theme. SpeakEasy's "Seriously Involved" program engages students and teachers in underserved communities in NYC with a range of programs, including the SpeakEasy Bookmobile that delivers literature to "book deserts."

Bianca’s book is ridiculously well written and fun. She never takes herself too seriously nor gets overly cynical. Worth the read for sure

It's rare, I think, to be as brilliant in live performance as on the written page -- but that's my experience of author Ava Chin's storytelling in both mediums. Even if you've not read "Mott Street," I think others will likewise enjoy this lively, fascinating, and entertaining tale of Chin's growing up as a fifth-generation Chinese-American New Yorker who, in her quest for a permanently absent father, discovered a wider network of rich family roots among which she ultimately found herself. Delivered with lessons for us all -- gung-gung, gung-gung, gung-gung...

Just finishing Sing Her Down. It's been on EVERYBODY's Top Ten crime novel lists for this year. She can definitely write, but I don't like it as much as everybody else did. That said, I didn't launch it into the trash -- something I'm often inclined to do with crime fiction written by women. (I think they're generally aimed at women.) But I am inclined to read her earlier books. That's a good sign. That first novel really sounds appealing to me.
