The National Association of Rocketry (NAR) and the Tripoli Rocketry Association sponsor clubs that secure the best launch sites, attract vendors to launch events, hold competitions, and provide all manner of support for a beginning rocketeer. They have club locator tools on their websites. Best to start with something small, too. shanestachwick4784 no, it is not a 2L soda bottle water kit, my tubes are about the length of a pinke finger, and a quarter of an inch inside diameter, my propellant is pyrodex, a muzzleloading propellent, and mabye baking soda for the burn rate, and yes I am aware of it blowing up, I'm not mixing any chemicals like suger and potassium nitrate, or black powder, the way I will test my rockets for saftey is using very small quantities of propellent and mixed with baking soda to slow the already slow pyrodex propellant, to insure no explosion happens, I can mix the right amount of baking soda with pyrodex to create a very slow propellant that has no way of blowing up the tube, I can insure saftey in the scenario. But the main question I have? Is making any rocket motor legal? Not firing it, whether in a rocket or secured to a brick, just making it.

@shanestachwick4784 so, I looked at this site called TheModelRocket and they said on the federal level you can make rocket fuel and rocket motors, HOWEVER, I also looked at NFPA 1125 and, well, they require that anyone who builds a rocket motor is federally licensed, and they prohibit anyone from building a rocket motor in any residence or dwelling... Edit: Ok so I just read that the NFPA is a citizen run organization and have no authority, HOWEVER, nebraska, to my knowledge, does implement NFPA standards, I don't what what standards, but I need to research.

@shanestachwick4784 i bought myself a bottle rocket kit that makes 1/4" by 2" tubes, very small. How do I get into contact with them. How much money does it cost? And what are the penalties of getting in trouble for making rocket motors "illegally". Also I think making your own motors is greatly cheaper the the Estes motors, 10 bucks for 3 A motors 😬
@shanestachwick47849 ай бұрын
Do you mean water rockets that use a 2L soda bottle, or firecrackers that launch from the rim of a glass bottle? Tripoli’s website has a map of their prefectures along with contact info. Penalties will depend on your jurisdiction but I imagine they can range from a citation to a fine to a few months in jail for violating your local fire code. Let’s also not forget the hazards to life, limb, and property involved with mixing flammable materials. Remember, you’re loading combustibles into a pressure vessel. Without the proper expertise and safety precautions, you may very well be making a bomb! Bombs are messy. I have no numbers for cost but I know that you’re working against economies of scale. Estes and AeroTech have invested capital into acquiring production facilities and equipment, settling on materials, producing designs, prototyping, static testing, automating the production process, and producing them in bulk. You will spend much more than $10, on the order of hundreds possibly, to produce three flying research motors of the same impulse class that reliably perform the way you want them to. For this reason, research rocketry is not generally considered to have any economic advantages over traditional solid propellant motors certified for consumer use. If you want to lower your costs, consider: * Buying motors from vendors at launch events or local hobby stores instead of having them shipped to you. *Make friends on the range. You may get unexpected favors, freebies, or prizes every now and then. I’ve received discounted or free night flying lights, rockets in various stages of completion, kits, laser-cut fins and centering rings, tools, launch equipment, tube couplers, reload kits, altimeters, even a Cesaroni starter hardware set that was way too big for my certification level. * Investing in reloadable hardware. The cost savings of a reload are small in the G range and under, but they increase in a certain sweet spot where a single-use motor will incur hazmat shipping fees but the individually-packaged grains of a reload can duck under that limit. Buying used hardware can also offset the upfront cost. *Flying hybrids. The ground support equipment is expensive and nitrous oxide can be difficult to acquire, but some clubs that fly hybrids share GSE and the cost of the actual propellant is very low. I believe the grains are immune to hazmat charges as well. * Flying smaller motors. I think Estes mini motors retail at like $12 for a pack of 4 and AeroTech/Quest MicroMaxx motors have a comparable price tag for a pack of 6. *Taking advantage of sales and promotions. Check out the Wildman website. *Pool HAZMAT purchases with other flyers, or buy a bunch simultaneously if you’re going solo. *Volunteer at a club launch. The more time you spend running the range, the less propellant/money you burn for the same amount of fun. At least, that’s true if you like making friends, checking out other people’s projects, and seeing a LOT of other rockets go.

I wonder about the NFPA regulations about making homemade engines, "The NFPA prohibits the use of homemade rocket engines when launching model rockets or high powered model rockets. They insist that all engines must be certified. The NAR also prohibits using any rocket engine that is not certified." Right, but it says no use of a homemade engine WHEN launching a model rocket, but THEN it says ALL engines must be certified. Do they allow us to make rocket engines? Do they require ALL homemade engines brought into existence be certified, even when your not using them for Launching a model rocket,is it illegal to light a homemade engine even when securing the motor to a cinderbrick and lighting it that way? I'm having trouble finding the codes for NFPA 1125, could you help me out? MAIN QUESTIONS: can I make a homemade rocket engine for no use at all legally? Can I make a rocket engine and secure it to a fixed object and light it legally? I would appreciate if you could help me out.

You will want to get into contact with your local Tripoli Rocketry Association prefecture. Tripoli supports research rocketry for members certified at Level 2 and above.
