The best part of watching a Reds game at Riverfront / Crosley was runners starting to steal 2nd base ,stopping because they knew they'd get thrown out , then Bench throwing behind them , picking them off. Sometimes he did it without getting out of the catchers crouch.

Interesting tidbit. Willie is the only man in MLB history to hit a home run in every inning from 1 to 16.

The biggest thing I remember about him wasn't on field. Biggio almost left, Bags said re do my deal keep him here. And it happened cause he wanted his brother and took less money. That's a man! ...... in my opinion.

LoL Thurman Munson BA .292, Berra .285, Posey .302, Piazza .308, Johnny Bench's BA .267 . I watched Bench in person for many years - he was NOTHING special - the only reason he's even considered as "great" is because of the BRM. He sucked back in the 70's - everyone wanted the autographs of everyone else, especially Rose and that's why Bench is suck a PoS.

1:56 to receive the ball 6 feet from the plate and get the tag. He focused on catching the ball first, like a good receiver in football who doesn't try to run before tucking it away. Then lightning quick to the tag

I went to those giants games when the stands were empty then Will Clark showed up and the stands filled up. First time I heard him talk on interview, I thought, who is this ebonic wannabe, and then I learned where he was from in Louisiana. His greatest achievement in life is that he mastered communication in different languages through his bat and that beautiful swing. The Ultimo Left Handed Hitter. xoxo por vida!

When I was a kid, I was a dyed-in-the-wool Reds fan, even though I grew up in NJ. When I was somewhere around 8-10 years old, I wrote a letter to the Reds to tell them that Johnny Bench was my favorite player. I have no idea how on earth the letter got to them. There's no way I had any particular address for the Reds front office. I probably just mailed it to "Cincinnati". But I know for a fact they got it, because a couple of weeks later I received a B&W photo of Johnny in the mail from the Reds, signed by Johnny himself.

Johnny revolutionized the catcher's position and what you could expect from a catcher, both defensively and offensively. As Sparky Anderson said, I'd never want to embarrass another catcher by comparing him to Bench.
