considering this is a Naomi 1 game it's a shame that Sega didn't port it to the Dreamcast, there are Naomi 1 games that got a Dreamcast port and are more graphically complex than SlashOut and Spikersbattle (for example Dead or Alive 2 and Ferrari f355 challenge and Crazy Taxi 1 and 2), at least Capcom has converted all its Naomi games to Dreamcast while Sega has left out games like MonkeyBall Spikersbattle and SlashOut 😞
@icuk7Ай бұрын
I'm not sure why those games you mentioned didn't get ported. Maybe it was due to the additional RAM on Naomi hardware, or maybe it was a strategy to keep some games exclusive to the Arcade environment? Who knows! Thanks for the comment.
@lucasmafyo9076Ай бұрын
@@icuk7 Sonic Adventure 2 for Dreamcast has a superior graphics engine to SlashOut, and the fact that Naomi has more RAM is only useful because Naomi immediately loads the entire rom avoiding loading unlike the Dreamcast which instead uses the buffer between RAM and Gdrom but the performance they are the same in terms of polygon and texture. It should also be remembered that Sega produced the Rent-a-hero n1 game which has the same engine as SpikeOut but totally OpenWorld, so it means that the Ram problem does not exist! Probably, as you say, these are strategies used by Sega given the premature death of the Dreamcast, otherwise it cannot be explained why a light game like MonkeyBall didn't get a port on the Dreamcast! Thanx 👍🏼
@icuk7Ай бұрын
@@lucasmafyo9076 I'm no expert, but with the VRAM and system RAM being smaller on Naomi, maybe there were performance issues when porting the code across? I know from experience that PC's using too less system RAM and too less VRAM causes stuttering and lags, especially in slightly open world games similar to SpikeOut and SlashOut. But again, I'm no expert. I imagine some games were coded for both Naomi and Dreamcast platforms, and some games were coded specifically to take full advantage of the Naomi hardware.
@lucasmafyo9076Ай бұрын
@@icuk7 your reasoning is more than logical, but Naomi behaves differently compared to home consoles: Naomi needs more ram and vram to avoid loading while home consoles have the advantage of loading the buffer in real time between ram/vram to the disk (DVD or CD or GDROM) so no additional megabytes of RAM are needed. Furthermore, SlashOut and SpikeOut are not strictly OpenWorld but each level (albeit large) is binary, unlike Rent-a-hero n1 which is totally OpenWorld and uses the same engine. I believe this happened: SlashOut and Spikersbattle did not achieve much success in arcades (especially in Japan) compared to SpikeOut, while Zombie Revenge turned out to be one of the most played Naomi games and for this reason it received a port, on the contrary SpikeOut came from from model 3 it would have taken too long to convert due to the complexity of model 3, in fact it took almost 7 years to port it to Xbox (and yet the result was painful). If we then add that SlashOut came out at the end of 2000 and Spikersbattle in 2001 and the Dreamcast died in 2001 they probably gave up!
@icuk7Ай бұрын
@@lucasmafyo9076 I appreciate your reply. I understand what you are saying, and some things I agree with, but I'd have thought that the superior performance of the PowerVR GPU on Naomi coupled with the additional RAM and VRAM would have made it difficult for some Dreamcast games to be ported from Naomi, especially if they were coded specifically for Naomi. In a game like SlashOut it would be interesting to know how much each area uses in RAM and VRAM, and would the game theoretically be able to run on Dreamcast without performance issues. Maybe one day someone will try and do that, who knows!

Nice to see you do Model 2 attract modes from real hardware. Have you hooked up or modded any pots based wheels to play this one, or do you have an actual SR1995 cabinet? I know it won't play correctly in an SR2 cabinet as it's different feedback, plus Model 2A is an absolute picky board when it comes to power (way more pickier than Model 2B and Cs). Outside the PS2 port, having the original PCB is actually the best way to play some of these Model 2A games, as the current emulation suffers from AI bugs within the CPU. Likewise with Manx TT Superbike.

Hey man, thanks for the input and I hope all is well. Seems we are both taking a rest from FE these days, the Linda grind got a bit too stressful for me so I'm taking a short break from the game. 😅 Yeah, I like the look of RT4K capture footage too, the RT4K settings are pretty much default settings which is quite impressive, I only changed like 2 or 3 settings to get up and running. Much better than my random OSSC settings which probably make things look a bit worse than using optimal settings. One thing I'm seeing after KZread encoding is that the in game text also looks slightly clearer to me? Such as the FREE PLAY text in bottom left hand corner, but I'm using less bitrate which generates a smaller upload filesize. It'll be interesting to see if that translates into better quality livestream footage @ 6000kbps. I'm also interested in seeing how it handles something like Battle Street on Xbox using component cable, I've found that Xbox capture is quite dull looking using OSSC. I was really lucky finding a 4K Magewell capture card for £150 (approx $185) last year on eBay, retail price for that is like £750+. Retail price for RT4K is $799, but I had to pay an additional $235 (Combined shipping and import duty) on top. Is that cost worth the extra if just using the device for capture/live streaming? To some people yes, but to most people I'd probably say it's not worth it. Strong CPU + OSSC + 1080p Capture card is the sweet spot, and the best value is using an Nvidia GPU to do the encoding rather than using the CPU. My OSSC cost me $140 USD 5 years ago. and it's still an awesome device. But RT4K is a more complete product which comes with a hefty price tag. It's a very convenient product and I'm glad I bought it, hopefully it lasts for many years. I'll try capturing some different games soon, I really need to update my Daytona 2 capture footage. Thanks.

Thanks.
@@icuk7 I also noticed the text difference but its hard to quantify. It kind of looks like the black outlines around each letter are slightly thicker on the retrotink footage. Whatever the exact difference is, the output is gorgeous so it seems like a great product even though its so expensive. Currently taking a break from Spikeout to spend time on some other things but will hopefully be playing again soon. Wish you the best.
Are you going to play Spikeout Battle Street in Livestream?
Yes, I'll try playing SpikeOut Battle Street soon using new upscaler. But please wait a while, I'm busy with work at the moment. Next month I'll have some free time.

Absolutely love the dedication here, I’ve become obsessed with the game the past 2+ years. Most likely gonna buy a cab when the Round 1’s around the country stop supporting stage 8
Thanks man, I appreciate the comment. For me, ID8 is the best in the series, it was well worth going through the hassle of getting the game up and running. I hope you can get a cab in the near future. Thanks.
@@icuk7 thanks for the reply!! Love ur content

Thank you for sharing this footage! Side Arms is a true classic. Still one of the best shmups ever made !

Is this amulator
It's the real PCB. Thanks.
Could it be that the sharpness of the image suffered from the recording/compression process?
I made this video 6 years ago. The blurry quality of the footage is a combination of KZread compression @ 720p and the equipment I was using at the time. I'll make a better video when I upgrade my upscaler. Thanks for the comment!
If you could do that, it would be very much appreciated. :) Do you own the Model 3 Board? I'm jealous... it's a legend!@@icuk7
