Piccadilly Model Railways

Piccadilly Model Railways

HI EVERYONE,

Piccadilly Model Railways currently covers two layouts: An N gauge layout based around modern day Manchester Piccadilly.
This layout was started in October 2018 and represents Piccadilly station and an image of the WCML. The layout is broken in sections DCC depicted miles apart from each other separated by varying modelling features eg bridges, backscenes etc. It will included other smaller branch line stations so trains can go on a journey.
The other layout OO gauge Piccadilly Sidings is a fictional location near Manchester which is mainly a heritage lin but modern stock still passes through. This layout currently is an end to end but is
Kind regards, shortly going to be converted into a tail chaser with a hi long traverser as a fiddle yard. I am keen to see this complete as the layout is vastly under used. It’ll will be nice to see trains running continuously. Scenic areas of the layout need some work but will largely remain unchanged in the conversion.
Regards,
John

lol, what you like? Strangely others have said the same. Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better. I wouldn’t have left it looking a disaster lol. Having said that you haven’t seen what is in store for the Torr Vale unit, drastic but very necessary. Worry not the river, buildings and walkways are safe, well I hope so anyway, ha ha ha.

Dear John, very interesting how you solved the leakage problem around the mill. Regarding the fact you built up the scenery around the mill in several sessions I humbly think it’s very easy to leave a kind of gap, like the one you now mentioned. Love the idea though to check the riverbed with actual water. Even though it sounds risky, it’s indeed a great way to check the base for leaks, although I do understand the volume count was indeed the drive for the H2O pour. Glad to see and hear the wetting of the mill base wasn’t damaged too much and appropriately restored, as well as strengthened. Love the way the weirs look after the glossy Mod Podge and the white whirls added. Great to see the way you did the riverbed around the mill did prevent the ominous creep around the river’s edges. In that sense it’s very interesting you chose a different method for the other river. Where you simply made the surrounding green scenic elements removable, which created a beautiful and crisp river edge with a very natural looking overhang of soil and vegetation. Cheerio

I can appreciate it may seem mad to use water, but it really did show any potential leakage. Water really does find the tiniest gap. I would however, make sure the riverbed is watertight before continuing, but probably would use water again. I’m not always the one to follow convention, lol

Maybe dry sand would have been a better idea than water to test the volumes needed, then it could be vacuumed up and no water damage.

Hi David, yes indeed that would work to some degree. I don't regret using the water as it found the tiniest of holes. I probably would do yhe same again, but vlearly much earlier in the build way before any foliage and riverbed scenics is added.

Learning never stops. In my model railway days, I did a lot of experimenting. Most of the time, success. We need to be willing to go outside of our comfort zone. Your experimenting with the river reminds me of a football match. Your team played a poor first half. You trail 2-0 at the half. But in the second half, you 3 goals and you are now in extra time. You now have a good chance to win the match. I believe you will prevail over the river. Bill and Janet from California

Hi John I've been on holiday so missed a few videos. I do my rivers in a similar fashion. However I do use sculptamould for the river bed sealed with acrylic paint then sealed on top with a small amount of the water mixture. This also seals the stones on the river bed too. I seal the masking tape with sealant, it's not overkill it's just common sense to me. My waterfalls are made the kathy millat way also. Great job so far, look forward to the next one. By the way the river goyt is that colour because it starts on the moorlands adjacent to the cat and fiddle inn so it's coloured by the peat, it's also sat in errwood and fernilee reservoirs on route cheers Andy

You do make me chuckle Andy, here's me thinking that mud colours the river water, silly me, lol. Thank you for your kind comments about the resin pour, I still cant believe the acrylic varnish wasn't waterproof, never mind. Even though I smoothered the 'silcone' compound, strangely it looks ok through the resin. Got to be a result. Btw, I went to create the mound you suggested by Goytcliffe viaduct to hide the clip. However, it was so close to the tracks it didnt look right. So I made some hollow containers, they fit better, hope you dont mind? Although, how someone gets to them is another matter. Perhaps they need a tardis to get to there, lol.

Hi, so glad the video was helpful to you. I always use double sided tape for nameplates, that way you won’t damage the bodywork on the loco and they are easier to position, so much cleaner too. Regarding vacuum hoses I always found I needed to drill out the holes slightly using a micro drill bit set and hand twist drill or pin vice as they are also called. Test each without glue first. Please say if I can help further.
