He's trying to transpose his modern leftwing modernist definition of ethnic identity on easten Romans to fit in with Sksopians foreign apologists the claimed them "Macedonians". They were not an "ethnic" group. Easterm Roman emperor, Leo V was an Armenian. Constantine was a mix of Illyrian and Greek. They were from different ethnic background but emphasized Roman national identity and Christianity over ethnic heritage. The western Holy Roman empire even insisted they were mostly Greeks not Roman.

Physist Alan Sokal warned about a segment of academics in the humanities are peddling their leftist politics under the veneer of scientific discourse. This describes the so-called "Greek" academic here to a tee. Speaking as a Greek, it's obvious he's a leftist by his political correct gibberish narrative. He's massaging the narrative of Hellenism using ad-hoc analogies to match current western narratives of Greeks as not "real" Greeks not the view most Greeks have of themselves and Greek history. A prime example is his claim Greeks of today have more in common with middle age Roman Greeks is plain ridiculous.. Greece during the middle ages was theocratic. And the very fact he uses the insulting western term Byzantine is further evidence of a desire to fit in with foreign colleagues rather than historic truth. The reason why the term Byzantine is used by the west isn't trivial issue. It's at the heart of identifying the primary ethnicity and culture of the people the eastern Roman empire. The reason is because after the Pope crowned Charlemagne Roman emperor in the Holy Roman empire the west claimed they were the "real" Roman empire. Despite that the east called themselves the Roman empire, until the 17th century the western Roman empire insisted the eastern Roman one was Greek. Roman was not an "ethnicity" in the eastern Roman empire as this author falsely claims. Anyone could be Roman. Post antiquity Roman was closer to a citizenship than an ethnicity. With the Renaissance, Hellenism came back into vogue in the west., The west then switching to calling the east "Byzantine" in the 17th century as way to disconnect Greece's people from both Roman imperial authority and ancient Greeks. In other words, they were motivated by hate not academic objectivity. This disconnect from the past was later used by Nazis to commit atrocities against Greeks as they justified as it as against not "real" Greeks. As a ethnic Greek with no non-Greeks as far back as I can trace my roots, I find "Greek" leftists like Kadellis appalling. This man in no shape or form speaks for me as a Greek I don't even see "Greeks' like him as Greek despite the term Greek to describe himself. We don't share the same identity. He obviously suffering an identity crisis trying so hard to fit in. He doesn't even follow his own alleged academic principles when it comes to making similar historical decoupling analogies with other ethnic groups and languages who have less in common with their claimed roots than Greeks do. Guaranteed this leftist pseudo-Greek coward has never condemned Skopje's foreign apologists for ridiculously recognizing Skopians as Macedonians.

The thing that bothers me the most about all this is that I arrived 4 years late for the well-deserved hype that this book has. I finished listening to the audio book (an experience that I highly recommend. The narrator did an exceptional job) for the second time two days ago and I am still in mourning. It is a beautiful story, excellently narrated and described. The depth in Patroclus, the complexity of Achilles. The development of love and its dynamics. The passion, the faith, the dedication, the adoration, the sensations... The story changes your life, you become someone new, with a new definition of loving. It is wonderful.

could the book have been called The Achilliad? It still means 'the song of achilles' but has the added significance of sounding like 'The Illiad' showing how bound to Troy his fate was?

Greeks and Turks still have hostilities over an event that occurred over 6 centuries ago. Let it go already! In that case we should all be angry at the Italians because Rome ruled just about half the world it seems.

Didn't even know that 'Iliad' means 'Song of Troy'. As we only have the words and the original music is long forgotten, we must have a partial view of its original appeal. The Ancient Greeks invented an alphabet to record the words, but they never devised an adequate music notation.

Cyprus is one Internationally recognized country. Blue Homeland doctrine is a joke. It will never go anywhere. Turkey is bankrupt. And cannot afford military grade airplanes, much less F-35’s. Austerity is waiting for Turkey.
